1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
I have 3 basic SCART cables (two with small cables, one with a really thick rubbery cable) and it seems that the "kinda short, thin, non-rubbery cable" looks better than the other two on my VHS player to my HD TV (the one without RGB on the SCART), so I'm wondering if that cable, and by extension the SCART socket support S-Video and the other two cables don't. I do remember a packet for one of them saying "supports S-Video".
The wiring of the supposedly S-Video cable has colourful wires of varying colours, while the other two have differently-coloured wires but a lot of orange cables, if that helps.

Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
All scart cables which support RGB do also support s-video (s-video uses the composite pin for luminance and the red pin for chroma). On TVs equipped with two scart sockets usually the first one is for composite and RGB, while the second one is for composite and s-video.
Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
So, if my HD TV doesn't support RGB on the SCART but does support Composite then does that mean it supports Composite and S-Video?Fudoh wrote:All scart cables which support RGB do also support s-video (s-video uses the composite pin for luminance and the red pin for chroma). How do I identify which cables are which?
Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
I would be surprised to find a HDTV set which has a physical Scart input, but does support RGB. For composite and s-video alone other connections make much more sense.
VHS recorders don't support s-video output.

Then am I just imagining it looking slightly better than the two cables? I'll try to describe the pinouts:Fudoh wrote:I would be surprised to find a HDTV set which has a physical Scart input, but does support RGB. For composite and s-video alone other connections make much more sense.

Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
Probably one is better shielded or uses proper coax for the video line.... Cable quality matters a lot for analogue video.
Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
So is that how it goes then?Fudoh wrote:Probably one is better shielded or uses proper coax for the video line.... Cable quality matters a lot for analogue video.
For reference my HD TV is Technika 21.6" LCD TV (Model X21.6/54G-GW-TCDU-UK).
Is that helpful as to whether its SCART has S-Video or not?
It's also worth asking if the quality of the SCART cable will matter too much if it's the cable coming from a Hamma AV-100S to a CGA2VGA/GBS-8200.
Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
It would be if you had the instruction manualIs that helpful as to whether its SCART has S-Video or not?

Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
Wasn't under Technika but matched the code completely:
http://www.skymediauk.co.uk/Downloads/U ... 2-228W.pdf
Nothing on S-Video or RGB, except for this...
It says it does PC RGB, which is assumedly VGA, so I don't know if I could use RGB SCART with it without a scaler/adapter.
It only says "SCART" and never specifies if it can do S-Video or RGB. Maybe through some kind of code on a certain menu... (Like what I did to make its DVD Player region-free)
Oh, and it says it can do 70HZ on VGA input, so I guess that may help the whole "using a SLG 3000 on PAL material" problem I had a while ago.

Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
not really. Nearly all VGA port support 640x400@70Hz - basically the Bios/DOS timing....so I guess that may help the whole "using a SLG 3000 on PAL material" problem I had a while ago.
Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
Unlikely. It's unusual for the manual not to specify the capabilities of the SCART socket. If there's only one then it's probably RGB enabled.Maybe through some kind of code on a certain menu... (Like what I did to make its DVD Player region-free)
Like Fudoh says, nope. PAL is 50hz not 70hz.Oh, and it says it can do 70HZ on VGA input, so I guess that may help the whole "using a SLG 3000 on PAL material" problem I had a while ago.

Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
It wasn't when I utilized PS1 & NGC RGB SCART cables in it.BuckoA51 wrote:Unlikely. It's unusual for the manual not to specify the capabilities of the SCART socket. If there's only one then it's probably RGB enabled.
There's a tiny little chance that they weren't RGB, but both cables I got (that were wired the same) said they were wired for RGB on eBay (one recommended to me by a person on Racketboy forums and he probably meant for a RGB cable) and I was told, on here in fact, that I had the correct NGC RGB SCART cable. When used on the HD TV there was quite an admitable jump from the included Composite cables to RGB SCART, but it may still of been in Composite-esque quality. For all I know those Composite cables could of just been in bad condition. I'd rather have wasted my money (well, nothing too much) on Composite SCART cables and have those annoying diagonally moving lines on my NGC image than having a non-RGB SCART socket. If it helps I can probably list the pinout of the PS1 SCART cables if that helps.
Well there is an option for 50HZ on there too.BuckoA51 wrote:Like Fudoh says, nope. PAL is 50hz not 70hz.
Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
Well you have to remember that HDTV's don't deal with retro consoles all that well anyway, things like diagonally moving lines aren't unheard of.
50hz VGA is very rare, especially in newer TV's but again not unheard of I suppose.Well there is an option for 50HZ on there too.

Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
I must try out the NGC's RGB SCART on an older TV then at some point.BuckoA51 wrote:Well you have to remember that HDTV's don't deal with retro consoles all that well anyway, things like diagonally moving lines aren't unheard of.
Re: 1 SCART cable > 2 Others = S-Video SCART cable/Socket?
I tried the NGC RGB SCART cable on another HD TV and that didn't have the diagonally moving lines, though the image on that TV may of been blurrier and the image could of been blurred to hide the lines instead of being clear as day.BuckoA51 wrote:Well you have to remember that HDTV's don't deal with retro consoles all that well anyway, things like diagonally moving lines aren't unheard of.
