Why was this Saturn never released?

Post by D »

That's why it died. Because this color was never released. To me the most beautiful piece of Video Game hardware ever

gray or black....blech.
The white one is cool though, one should arrive soon! :)

Saturn died because all systems eventually die when more powerful ones arrive.

Yes, you are right. Saturn died because it was outdone by PlayStation. Not because it is less powerful than PlayStation.

Just like DreamCast & GameCube vs PlayStation 2. They are not really less powerful hardwarewise, they just being outdone in marketing. Sony marketing people really know how to did their job. Nintendo bewared, the overprice, bad control layout, non-standard screen size (16:9) PSP might really becomes a real treat to Nintendos hand-held market in the hands of the Sony marketing people.

That is the original Saturn -- the design before they went with the really ugly gray color. No idea why. I have a magazine at home where it was first announced (officially) as the "Sega Saturn" (as opposed to just Saturn) and showed that model.

Indeed, I remember the same photos. However, this model looks brighter than the magazine images I've seen, maybe because of the super-bright lighting as opposed to dim showroom lighting.

Stare at the red/orange font in the upper left corner...you can't tell me that ,that doesn't scream Turbo Grafx -16!!!
(style letters for US NEC/Turbo games)

That Saturn may be nice, but I still prefer mine in Black.
Maybe a white one with black stripes!! 8)

Most people, really. If the average consumer has to choose between a cheaper and a more expensive option, the only difference being the color, then the cheaper option wins.

My point is, how much more expensive is another color? I think it also might've appealed more to girls as well. (and to one guy...)

But there's hope. 12 were made

I thought SS died because Sega didn't have wide enough spectrum for its gaming titles on the SS (with the main reason SS being made so that hardcore Virtual Fighter players in Japan could have the luxury to play that game in their own homes?) as compared to... trillions of titles for the PS?

And I have the white SS (two, actually, but my first one got busted and get replaced >_>) too, with the slight difference being the dark grey thingy on the console being light gray, and the start/restart buttons being dark grey. And the outer part of the controller being grey, and with different colored A/B/C buttons on it.

I think I read in Edge the color was ditched because the paint flaked and came off easily. So they done away with the gloss and made it Gray.

I stumbled upon something thoroughly odd and thought it would fit this thread perfectly. http://www.secretspain.org/ssong.zip It's a movie of an anime-chick singing about a white Sega Saturn and other white stuff. Very odd.

I believe that the Derby Stallion Saturn is actually much rarer than the This Is Cool edition.

This is true. The Derby Stallion Saturn is more rare than the "This is Cool" promo Saturn (But I prefer my Saturn reassuring me that it is indeed, "Cool").

But neither are as rare as the Brazilian TecToy see-through Saturn.

Yeah, "Katana" is actually printed on the Dreamcast's mainboard. :)

Long time no see! :D

I happened to luck out and get a Derby Box mint a year ago for $140 (actually free; see below) by accident. (Ordered a white Saturn.)

I almost didn't get anything since the place tried to get a bunch of orders in before shutting the doors.

A couple months went by without delivery and I managed to find out that the Feds were shutting them down. I called up my CC company immediately.

I also emailed the place telling them I knew they were holding orders on purpose.

It "magically" came next day air. :P
