Question on RGB range setting matching a YUV/HDMI converter

Post by Fudoh »

can't wrap my head around it - maybe somebody else can ?

Got a converter from analogue component to HDMI. Cheap china stuff, but works great. Haven't actually checked what it outputs, YCBCr or RGB in either full or limited range. My TV got a RGB range setting (full or limited). Did and does it's job for years and does, despite it's name, affect YCbCr signals as well (at least I believe so from memory). Set it wrong and you get black crush or washed out blacks (e.g. your source is full range RGB and you set it to limited, you get black crush).

Now, 480p from this "china" converter, into the TV, stunning quality, but the range setting doesn't make a difference. Looks 100% the same with both settings. What does this say about the converter ? Or about the TV ? Or about anything going on here ?

TV's a Sony HX900.

Dump your HX900 and buy a W900? Do you ever actually need force the HDMI color space settings? I seem to recall on AVS people mentioning that they needed to force RGB (full range) output from the PS3 and set the HDMI dynamic range setting to full range (RGB). Doesn't your HX900 have an automatic setting? If so, have you encountered situations where there is a mismatch? I've played around with the HDMI Dynamic rang setting on my XBR8 and it seems to do the right thing when set to auto.

The W900 looks very nice for games btw. Lower than 2013 panasonic plasma input lag on the 55" model (around <19 ms)! No dithering, ABL, or phosphor lag! Impulse (BFI) available in game mode too! I'm tempted if you can't tell. :)

I prefer the manual setting, as the auto setting tends to misread the luminance range (while it never applies full range by mistake, it tends to stick to limited, especially when using sources that change the range).

It's easy to create a mismatch if you don't know your sources. I usually do and don't have a problem with it. I just can't understand how the setting can possible DON'T make a difference with a certain source.

I want to upgrade, but I don't want to go from 52 to 55". I want 65" or at least 60". Otherwise the W9 looks nice, right, but their triluminous marketing babble is nothing than an approach to get the XBR8's colors back. The low lag is interesting of course, still I'm kinda pissed that they don't have any set with full LED backlight left in the lineup. Edge lit local dimming has it's limits and that's obvious on both the W9 and the X900 (4K) sets.

Well... don't you have a HDMI capture card device you can use to debug what the 480p source output is from the converter? Knowing what it's actually outputting could be useful information.

Maybe Sony will announce a full array local dimming model at IFA 2013! The only problem with going bigger than 55" is that won't get a PVA panel. I think it's documented on the X900 owners thread about the differences between the 55" (PVA), 65" (MVA?), and 84" (IPS) panels. Your HX900 is a Sharp UV2A, so a 55" PVA would be an upgrade!

While this is a comparison of the 4k panels, the same idea applies to 1080p panels.

I'd just have to hit a few buttons on the HDMI matrix to route the signal through a VP and hit the info button there. But too lazy right now and still interested how something like this could be possible...

So, you'd prefer to speculate instead of investigate? :)
