Dreamcast: no VGA, and dark AV

Hi all,

NTSC-J Dreamcast, cannot get the VGA to work. Have tried two monitors (Dell 1708FP and a Mitsubishi CRT). They both recognise the resolution, but all I get is a skewed image, very dark. No luck across 3 VGA boxes, including the lastest Hanzo.

Using AV direct to the TV the picture is darker than I would like but still playable. When I open the Dreamcast it appears that the AV/VGA component is soldered in without breaks, and I have cleaned the connections.

Any advice much appreciated

If your monitors have horizontal adjust, try moving the picture over to the right, that's all I can think of.
