RQ: DoDonPachi Saidaioujou 360 Mode

Post by n0rtygames »

Okay, the time has come to ask since nobody on IRC has a clue when I've asked and I see BareKnuckleRoo quite enjoys the mode and Smraedis has a 22bill replay up there. How the hell do you play this mode?

I can't seem to work out where most of my score is coming from, what the rythym I should be getting in to is and usually by late stage 3 to stage 4, I'm forced in to using low level hypers for survival.

Can anyone shed some light on the basic sort of gameflow for this mode, or have a translation of any Japanese instructions on the mode?

I get that:
* Using A+C drains your counter and gets your point item value up, rewarding you with hyper quicker
* Larger hypers give you additional GP bonus, so I think that scoring is supposed to happen during hyper

So I would be left to conclude that the aim is to spend all your counter, go hyper.. recharge.. rinse and repeat with the largest hypers you can manage. Hyper gain without A+C shot seems to be quite minimal, so I end up stuck around 0-3500 in late game.

Help! :)

Basically, cash in your meter for large glowing medals to gain hypers, use 'em to get a large hit chain, and for fuck's sake don't drop that chain. Dropping a chain late in a stage can seriously mess up your score, especially from stage 3 onwards. Stage 3 is where scoring starts getting big, especially if you start the stage with a level 10 hyper. Use it early as soon as those teleporting enemies show because both they and the turret (first one is at the far top right of the screen) are invulnerable when they appear, so you can pointblank 'em with a max hyper and get 11000-13000 chain well before the midboss.

Using a manual bomb is preferable to getting hit and autobombing as autobombing will immediately drop a chain. :(

Also remember to break off all the pieces a boss has (the things with lifebars!) as each one killed gets you a nice chunk of hyper (you don't have to use the shotlaser). Use the shotlaser to finish off boss phases to cash in all the bullets into glowing gems, but note that killing a boss with the shotlaser will not grant you glowing medals for some reason, only the basic large ones (killing midbosses with shotlaser will cash in their bullets for glowing medals as normal).

Is there a value difference between "glowing" stars and "not-glowing" ones? I thought that the glow just meant you'd activated your laser and were sucking them in...what'd I miss?

As far as I can tell, 360 Mode has 3 types of medals:

* Non-valuable medals. You get these from killing basic enemies when not currently in hyper and when you use the shot or the basic laser. The big ones recover your hyper slightly more than the small ones. You also seem to get these when you kill a stage boss's last form when not in hyper, even if you use the Shot+Laser.

* Glowing/high value medals. You get these from using the special meter draining Shot+Laser to kill enemies, with the number of medals being dependent on the type of enemy you kill (you gotta learn which are more useful for hyper recovery). They recover a ton of hyper for each collected, and swarms of popcorn can easily give you multiple hypers at a time. You can pop a swarm of popcorn, then stop shooting and they'll still count at glowing medals when you collect them, you don't need to keep using Shot+Laser. You also get these when you kill midbosses or midboss/boss phases. They always appear as giant medals. For enemies with a lot of health like the large enemies that appear at the end of stage 3, it's best to soften them up with the standard laser and then just finish them with the Shot+Laser (you get the same amount of hyper recovery with less of your meter used up).

* Green medals. Only when hypering, comes in small and big sizes, using the laser when you've hypered is best as each laser hit causes medals to 'shed' off enemies.

I always thought medals when using Shot+Laser glowed more (like a deeper shade of purple?) than standard large medals do... I could be wrong about this though and they may look the same as normal large medals, but I'm quite confident the ones you get when using the Shot+Laser are more valuable than the standard/low value large medals you get from kills using normal shot or laser (look at how many standard large medals you get when you kill a boss and not even earn one hyper).
