Best Sonic game on the Genesis?

Post by BUHA »

I've been playing them a lot on the mega collection for the GC and I'm remembering why I used to play the crap out of these games when I was growing up. Which is your guys' favorite? I can't really decide right now.

on the Genesis itself?
Sonic 3+Knux, it's the full game as intended rather than just 2 halves of one.

Then Sonic 2 itself

But Sonic CD trounces em both :P

When I was a kid I would probably have voted for Sonic 2 but I've played Sonic CD via emulation afew months back and It's more akin to Sonic One in style and It's the only Sonic Title I play now.

On the megadrive I'd pick Sonic 2 only because Sonic and Knuckles had that damn ghost level :x

2, for nostalgia's sake. It would be 3 were it not for that SHIT carnival level.

Truth.

I'd acutally say part 1 (for true nostalgia)... if it weren't for the annoying bonus stages (both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 had much better bonus levels with much better music) and the lack of spin-dash (unless you're playing it in Sonic Jam).

Aye.

And Sonic Jam are terrible ports. Slowdown and downsampleage, the Genesis versions are better by a mile. Such a disappointment in general, a decent arrange soundtrack would have made it worth getting.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite. It's a bit long for a single session, but the save game feature makes it easy to stop about halfway through and continue later.

In general, the big reason I prefer S3&K over the others is the more imaginative and varied level design (and by far my favorite of the special stages :D). I like a lot of the little touches too, such as how the second act subtly differs from the first in art and music, giving a zone a stronger sense of progression.

I played Sonic CD earlier this year and was somewhat disappointed. Though it has its moments, it's not without cluttered level design that makes for a lot of "stop and start" gameplay...especially when going for the emeralds and good futures.

Sonic 2, man. I've still got the Emerald Hill Zone tune stuck in my head.

Never was a big fan of S&K, mainly for that bullshit ghost pyramid stage, with all the slipping and sliding.

Sonic 1's still a classic, but Sonic 2 trumps it in every department as far as I'm concerned.

As for Sonic 3, the first time I played that was just a few months ago. Graphics looked wonderful, but I just didn't have much fun with it.

Um, why are S3 and S&K even listed? It's just S1, S2, and S3&K. Sonic 2 easily beats the later ones individually IMO with solid and straightforward stage design but the sheer variety and quantity in S3&K make it the more preferrable "game" for me.

S3&K gets my vote, it's just so damn epic for a sonic game, and I love the hyper forms. Plus it has the most badass final level I've ever seen in any sonic game.

Doomsday Zone>>>>>>>>>All Sonic levels. 8)

Of the Mega Drive Sonics, 3+Knuckles is clearly the best. The best Sonic game overall is still Sonic 1 on the Master System, though. It's not as speed-centric as other Sonic games, but it has much better and less repetitive stage designs than any of the 16-bit games.
