Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
I've had this off-brand RGB SCART cable that worked with Nintendo GameCube and I think it's supposed to be RGB but isn't because the SCART in the HD TV I'm using isn't RGB-enabled, so I'm hopefully getting a GBS-8200 modded for SCART to remedy that. Having said that, the regular Composite image from it has weird problems like diagonally moving lines:

(Didn't know how to crop the large image, as this forum doesn't seem to have that whole "IMG=LXW" thing in the coding)
So is this Nintendo GameCube SCART cable actually one intended for SNES/N64 and not exclusively for NGC and is that the problem, because I think I may of gotten one that was for SNES/N64/NGC instead, and not a NGC-exclusive one like this:

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
My english is not very good, you are saying that you want to use your Gamecube in RGB glory, but you say the cable you have isn't RGB because your HDTV don't accept it? For asking that, i presume you don't have an CRT tv with euro scart to test it, but you can open up the scart cable you have and see if its correctly wired for RGB.
Gamecube have seen a lot of cables being sold as RGB but in the end they were just composite video cables. I think an Gamecube RGB cable can be used with an NTSC USA super nintendo. The european SNES RGB cable version have to be modified to work on a gamecube and vice versa.

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
if a SCART cable works on non-RGB SCART input, this tells you nothing about the RGB lines in the cable. The TV would ignore them anyway, and just use the composite video which is supposed to be present on all SCART cables regardless.BitFaced wrote:I've had this off-brand RGB SCART cable that worked with Nintendo GameCube and I think it's supposed to be RGB but isn't because the SCART in the HD TV I'm using isn't RGB-enabled
As far as I know, GC SCART cables are very similar to NTSC SNES cables (I know, there should be no such thing, but they work great). PAL SNES cables however have different components on the RGB lines.

I use this one on my NTSC SNES and it works great:

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
I'll try to describe the pinout of the cable:
1 - Nothing
2 - Red Wire
3 - Nothing
4 - Grey Wire
5 - Nothing
6 - White Wire
7 - 220uf Capacitor -> Blue Wire
8 - Brown Wire + (Black striped yellow thing, assumedly something to do with sync)
9 - Nothing
10 - Nothing
11 - 220uf Capacitor -> Green Wire
12 - Nothing
13 - Nothing
14 - Nothing
15 - 220uf Capacitor -> Orange Wire
16 - 220uf Capacitor + (Previously mentioned black striped yellow thing)
17 - Pink Wire
18 - Black Wire + 220uf Capacitor (same one as 16)

20 - Yellow Wire

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
It seems you have a correct RGB scart cable. Does your HDTV have 2 scart inputs? only one is RGB enabled. If your tv is not RGB enabled in scart, then it will use the pin 19/20 for composite, that is allways there, as stated before by antron.
So, in resume, the problem is in your HDTV and not in the cable. If you have component inputs on your hdtv, you can grab an used wii, with a component cable, you can get it all for 50€ used, and play all your Nintendo Game cubes in component.

Well it's good to know that I have the correct cable then. Thanks for the help!Overkill wrote:It seems you have a correct RGB scart cable. Does your HDTV have 2 scart inputs? only one is RGB enabled. But to ask another question, is any RGB Nintendo SCART cable okay to use with a RGB-modded NTSC N64?
Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
no, you have to check with the modder to learn which cable is compatible. Most OLD N64 NTSC units use boosting circuits which require RGB cables configured for PAL SNES units.
Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
YAY CONFUSION well that'll be difficult if I buy one pre-modified.Fudoh wrote:no, you have to check with the modder to learn which cable is compatible. Most OLD N64 NTSC units use boosting circuits which require RGB cables configured for PAL SNES units.
Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
UPDATE!
I've tried the NGC RGB SCART cable on several TVs (2 HD TVs, an old non-HD TV that may be a CRT) and the "diagonal moving lines" problem still persisted, so the problem is not in the HD TV, but in the cable.

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
Better put that cable aside and look for a good quality one

How can I find those if I didn't wind up with one before?Overkill wrote:Better put that cable aside and look for a good quality one
Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
Original Gamecube RGB cables aren't too hard to find and they're still priced reasonably - around 30-35 EUR.

More in the £40-£50 range. Do they have to be original?

If you don't buy an original cable, how do you know you aren't getting another shitty cable like you already have?BitFaced wrote:http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?LH_BIN ... _PrefLoc=2

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
How do you know that all non-Nintendo ones are shitty? I can't spend £40 just in assurance that it's not bad. I've had 3rd party Component cables for Wii & PS2 and they seem fine.brentsg wrote:If you don't buy an original cable, how do you know you aren't getting another shitty cable like you already have?BitFaced wrote:http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?LH_BIN ... _PrefLoc=2

I mean you asked if they had to be original cables, after just having a runaround with bad ones. Clearly any cables will work as long as they are well made and have the proper wiring.

Well, I've only spent money on one NGC SCART cable so far! So I guess I'll gamble and see if I find a good one.brentsg wrote: Then just keep buying 3rd party cables until you find good ones.

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
This site sells GC RGB Scart cables at a very reasonable price: http://www.robwebb1.plus.com/snes/snes_hard.htm
I ordered a couple from there earlier today and I'll let you know what the quality is like once I receive them.
Having emailed the guy though, I'm pretty convinced they are good quality cables.

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
Where are you located? I know of a few different places that sell relatively inexpensive quality third party cables in various parts of the globe.

Re: Confused about this NGC RGB SCART cable
Ah, good. I'd recommend http://www.consolegoods.co.uk/ then. I bought a NTSC SNES cable from them (which is the same as a PAL Gamecube) back when I couldn't get a decent cable in the states. It was the third SCART cable I bought, and the first one that didn't have any interference. It should be relatively cheap for you since he is based in the UK, I had to pay dearly for shipping to the US.
