Attention PS3 Owners: 4.45 firmware update, systems bricking

Just a heads up to PS3 users. Multiple accounts of systems being stuck on the start-up screen/PS3 splash logo after updating to firmware 4.45. Firmware updates not recommended at this time. Enough accounts of systems being bricked to warrant not trying to roll the dice with this one, until an official resolution from Sony is announced.

Some folks have probably had this warning bum-rushing their social networking feeds, so my apologies in advance for adding to that.

EDIT: Sony is stating that this problem is affecting users who have upgraded their HDD. With that said though, be careful.

EDIT the 2nd: Sony rolled back Firmware 4.45. When you boot up your PS3, you will no longer be prompted to download. Nothing yet on a fix for consoles that did get bricked, though. At least not one that requires a system format.

I upgraded my HD years ago so I guess I'll be sitting this out. And yeah, there goes any positive they had accrued.

Oh jeez. I upgraded my PS3 already without knowing this. At least mine still has the stock 40GB HDD in it.

I updated mine last night before I read this thread, booted fine this morning, though my PS3 still has it's original 120GB HDD.

I would be surprised if Sony refused to fix a PS3 just because it was bought elsewhere.

Especially when it was broken because of Sony.

Fix != actually fix rather than replace, at least not all the time. I'd be quite concerned about having such a dated device getting sent to Sony.

I can tell you firsthand Sony refuses to fix PS3's bought in foreign territories, although that's under normal breakdown circumstances rather than them directly ruining your console. For that I'd give them a ring, just don't expect them to be all cool about it.

I bought a brand new PS3 in Hong Kong that stopped reading discs within a week, and I completely consider that to be their responsibility. Wouldn't fix it for me once I was back in the UK, however.

No, disabling ALL notifications used to disable trophy notifications (got changed in a earlier FW release), but there was never a separate option for disabling just trophy notifications.
