Honestly: Microsoft easily had the best E3 conference this year.
They confirmed Mirror's Edge 2 to not be Xbone exclusive, it's hard to beat that kind of news.

Re: PS4 - No Forced Online, No System-Wide Used Game DRM
It's unlikely that I'll need a new PC (as in, this one isn't broken and for the next gen I'd basically need to build a new one) so looks like I'll be going with Sony for the first time. And getting a Wii U for its exclusives.
Though not until at least the first PS4 price drop and the Wii U gets some games in 2014. Nice window to clear my backlog really.

Re: PS4 - No Forced Online, No System-Wide Used Game DRM
Kaz Hirai must be laughing himself to tears over the Xbone's ridiculousness. I can see it. "Read my lips: No new restrictions."
The PS4 design actually does look awesome. I'd like to see Cave & G.rev switch over to Sony's camp. G.Rev did put UD on PS3, so we may hear from them again.
No gun games on Xbone- EVER. Not unless some separate gun controller is put out. Controllerless play just ain't all that in some cases. Just ask Namco who wanted to also do Razing Storm on 360 but couldn't.
I wonder if either of the next-gen systems will be able to run a fully maxed 1920 x 1200 Crysis. Cevat Yerli believes early PS4/XBone titles will probably be on par with Crysis 3 running on high-end PCs. That said, I'm hoping there's a Crysis Trilogy Maximum Edition in the works for next-gen consoles. Bring the Ascension level back to Crysis 1, but make it skippable like "No Russian" was in CoD Modern Warfare 2. Also- I think there needs to be a Logitech or Kensington style trackball released for PS4. At least K&M support has been attempted on console before (Soldier of Fortune on Dreamcast did that).
Can't say I'm interested enough in KI to buy an Xbone. So you get one character out of maybe 16? It would not surprise me to see a price of $10 per extra character, putting the game in a Neo-Geo 150 Megabuck Shock price range.

Mmmmmm ok, so far Sony is looking a like a sure bet as far as the new gen goes. A game console just for gamers. However something looks odd to me, dunno but I smell something fishy around the corner.

Keep dreaming.Udderdude wrote:My dream is that someday, somewhere, a global multinational, multi-billion dollar corporation will say, "Hey, maybe we shouldn't shit all over our customers and assume they won't notice or care".

This is true, though hopefully they can/will make up for that by offering better discounts on the games themselves: I don't keep up all that closely, but from what I glimpse the Gold-only sales and whatnot MS offers have a ways to go to catch up with the promotions PS Plus tends to have on hand (though this coming gen the latter will also be required for online play, so who knows what sort of direction either company might take on this front).Because MS Points regularly go on sale, often at a good discount.
Re: PS4 - No Forced Online, No System-Wide Used Game DRM
That was a misstatement from Microsoft/Rare and certainly doesn't help its cause. Killer Instinct will have a free demo version a la Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate with purchasable a la carte content in addition to the normal full version.gameoverDude wrote:Can't say I'm interested enough in KI to buy an Xbone. I don't mind the aesthetics of either but PS4 definitely looks a lot more elegant. I'm just glad the systems are flat so I can hopefully stack them (unless there's something like the 360 S top vent...). An ugly Xbone (e.g. a throwback to 80s VCRs) is no surprise since neither of Microsoft's earlier consoles would compete in a beauty contest.
Last night's development is still a surprise to me. It's almost surreal how quickly the Xbox One now looks like it's dead on arrival. With region free out of the way, I think the only major base left to cover is whether the PS4 will have minimized input lag.
I thought for sure the publishers would've pressured both console manufacturers to implement the same strategy but now it looks like Microsoft was willingly obsequious as a strategic ploy (or Sony took a tremendous gamble). If Microsoft is betting entirely on its arguably stronger platform exclusives, then I've got to say that sounds like its development team used the right traditional predictive models based on past results but failed to realize the huge effects its new game policies are having. But even that doesn't account for misreading console pricing by 20%.

What's with wireless controllers being all the rage nowadays? I know the tech's gotten to the point where they're low-latency, but isn't wired still better for minimal lag?Ganelon wrote:With region free out of the way, I think the only major base left to cover is whether the PS4 will have minimized input lag.

I bet Xbox one will succeed in sales regardless of what kind of bullshit they do.
Face it people don't give a shit about this much. Some will complain, but still buy it for the games. Then people will get used to and accept it as the norm.
No different then the whole DLC fiasco before. Remember how many people bitched about that? Still very profitable and it worked out well.

Re: PS4 - No Forced Online, No System-Wide Used Game DRM
Actually, I just remembered that there is one more issue that I don't think has been addressed yet: will Sony continue to use online passes for their 1st party multiplayer games?Ganelon wrote:With region free out of the way, I think the only major base left to cover is whether the PS4 will have minimized input lag.

Re: Xbone: It's Official: No More Game Ownership
The difference this time is that the Xbox One is much more expensive than the PS4.DragonInstall wrote:I bet Xbox one will succeed in sales regardless of what kind of bullshit they do.

The bottom line still matters quite a bit to the masses, and when they see that the PS4 is both $100 cheaper and less restricted than the Xbox One, they'll be putting a bit more thought into their purchasing decision.

Re: PS4 - No Forced Online, No System-Wide Used Game DRM
Sony actually addressed that issue earlier today. Sony claims that it'll stop using online passes for its own PS4 games but will leave the option available for 3rd party publishers. The wording of that "DRM is up to publishers" announcement actually led to confusion over whether publishers could block used games but Sony assured that there would be no barrier on the system itself to prevent used games. Hence, an online pass is presumably the only option available.
Of course, that comment also had folks wondering about "region free" and apparently, while Sony's games will remain region free, publishers still have the option to add region locking. While this policy may sound depressing, it actually seems to be the same one used for the PS3. Let's just hope the Persona 4 Arena situation doesn't become a trend. Let's also hope Sony isn't trying to sneak anything by us with its cryptic responses.

I wonder if it's possible to build from scratch for 500 dollars a PC that smokes the XB1 in the graphics department. And I mean, really smoke it. Not just have better performance. (Not too familiar with gaming PCs, to be honest)

Re: Xbone: It's Official: No More Game Ownership
If you were to build a serious gaming PC, capable of handling anything thrown at it in the next 3-4 years graphics-wise at 1920x1080 with full detail/effects/etc, then the video card alone is going to cost you about $500. Sure you can get a graphics card for $100-200 that will perform well, but it definitely wouldn't "smoke" the XBO, and then of course there are the rest of the components -- even a current mid-range motherboard and CPU combo is going to be around $200, plus RAM, storage, case and power supply.Specineff wrote:I wonder if it's possible to build from scratch for 500 dollars a PC that smokes the XB1 in the graphics department. And even then, most serious PC gamers wouldn't even consider not upgrading for the same length of time as recent console lifecycles, assuming the components would even last that long.
Re: PS4 - No Forced Online, No System-Wide Used Game DRM
It was the first region locked ps3 retail game. Their reasoning was because every version was identical (american and japanese both have full english and japanese languages) it would stop people in japan importing the cheaper overseas version. One of the problems though was that the european version came out like a year later... with no ability to import the american one.ancestral-knowledge wrote:Could you explain this to me please? It makes total, 100% sense from a marketing standpoint to use all the negative backlash against Microsoft and spin it to make the PS4 look awesome. Nintendo's really missing out, which is mostly because they just released the Wii U so they don't have anything new to seriously hype up or offer as a serious alternative.Muchi Muchi Spork wrote:I don't think this was posted yet.
