Post by retroboy »

Hello to everyone and thanks for this fantastic website about retro stuff, i even know that this website exists.
I came here trough a friend and have a little question if you don´t mind.

MMMMM where to start :?

Right, if got an old Tube TV nothing from the other world really and i want to connect my HDMI graphic card to it, if seen and read a little bit trough the internet, and i find some things, but nothing reliable and want to ask for some help and some tips.

What should i do? or look for it?
Did i need any type of converter?
What type of converter would be the best or good for quality?
And the best one 8) is all this posible?

Thanks for your help and im very sorry to disturb with this silly question.

Thaaaanks

And sorry for my limited english

To my knowledge is no such thing as a HDMI-only graphics card. You would at least have a DVI-I port which carries an analogue VGA signal as well.

If you really are limited to HDMI, maybe on a nettop, you have to use a HDMI to VGA converter (e.g. a HDFury) and from VGA you can down convert to 15khz RGB if you like.

Hi retroboy,

First you need to tell us what kind of signal you want to output to that crt TV.

Because it gonna make the diference in the diferents setups availabe.

You need to check you graphics card, it is only hdmi out? no DVI or VGA output? for a simple and easy setup (480i or 576i output) you will need an HD fury to come out of your PC graphic card, this will make your hdmi out into VGA, and then you can grab an Extron VSC 700, this will turn your PC 31Khz vga signal into 480i/576i 15Khz.

Now, if you want to play old console, and arcade games, looking like they look 20 years ago, you can use other devices, options.

If you never heard of this forum, maybe you never read this site http://scanlines.hazard-city.de/ it should be your first reading, then come back and tell us more of what you are trying to do display in your old crt tv.

Wow thank you very much for this very interesting reply's, yes im looking for that 20 years old look on PC, that is the idea but i want to get a good quality and yes my graphic card do have a DVI Output, but i really don´t now a lot about old tv
resolutions i just now that it is and old TV

Any way to find out the support resolution of a old tv?
I do think it can manage 480I but ¿576i? mmmm

Well i go and read a little bit about this on the webpage you recommended and come back later, but you gave me a idea on how it could work.

Thanks to everyone

Where are you from? Does your crt tv have an scart input?

480i is from ntsc regions, 576i is pal standard and is from Europe and other pal regions. But if you want the old retro look of the arcade games it dosn't matter, because you will use your old crt TV and the old resolutions, like 240p.

You don't really need an extron for that, but that's an option.

Let's go by parts, first check your VGA card model, it may be compatible with Soft-15khz http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Soft-15khz or with CRT EmuDriver http://mame.3feetunder.com/windows-ati-crt-emudriver/

Using that, and your vga card you may be able to output low resolutions for your old crt tv.
