your greatest personal shmupping achievements

Post by professor ganson »

For me it would be getting onto the Gunbird 2 high-score board here. No, the score wasn't anything special---it's since been bumped off the board---but it marked a real transition in my play. I was no longer thinking: stop as soon as it stops being fun; after all, this is just your hobby. My new motto was: no pain, no gain. Remarks on this forum by Twitch, Icarus, Cigs, and Rob inspired me to set aside my casual attitude. I still don't have the spare time to be truly hardcore, but I'm happy with my more disciplined approach. Thanks, guys.

What is personally most significant among your shmupping accomplishments, and why?

I beat Einhander without ever taking a hit and got 100%. I never played the game again, though. I truly truly hated Einhander after that. I think i did that just to earn that police car thingy.

Not really one of 'my' shmups anyway. I prefer Gradius, Raiden, R-Type, DonPachi, or Bakraid series games... Einhander feels very different from those. It's just not as cool...

The only thing I can really brag about is reaching the third loop in Gradius Gaiden with a credit and no Edit. However, I've lost my prime. Many other Shmup-os have gone beyond third loop and gotten better scores.

I'm fairly proud of my Gradius III (arcade) 1CC, purely because it's a very hard game (and I'm not even in the same league as, say, Tviks :P) . I've single-credited tons of horizontal shooters, though. I have great scores on some vertical shmups too, but while I wouldn't call my interest in this genre a 'casual' one, I've never even thought about entering my scores online or participating in high-score threads. I don't see the need for any animosity or snobbery between these types of players, and I wish those who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of high scores all the luck in the world...

Reaching the second loop (even 2-4) of Yalkina STG was my greatest personal achievement. This game seemed so incredible hard and impossible to me that i wasnt really trying to be good at it but someday ive realised that i can do it and i did it.It was awesome! :)

Getting to stage five in DoDonPachi.
Getting to stage five in Battle Garegga.

1CC these games:

Super R-Type (1CC this game ten times in a row when I was four years old)
U.N. Squadron (both arcade and SNES)
R-Type III
Lords of Thunder
Blast Wind
1941 Counter Attack
Sonic Wings Special
Gradius III

I just came back from playing DoDonPachi. I'm still stuck in stage five, but my left wisk is hurting like hell for playing with the PS2 D-pad too long on MAME.

I guess the only thing impressive of mine is the Guwange 1CC and getting to the last boss in ESPGaluda Arrange mode, even the score isn't much to brag about.

Mine doesn't even have anything to do with high scores, yet I consider it to be one of my great shooter-related achievements, and that is building my own supergun setup and moving into PCB territory.

Respect if you built your own supergun. It's simple on paper, but you end up with a lovely rats nest of wiring halfway through.

Gradius first loop 1 life.

Anything Psikyo or Cave, I can get to the 4th or 5th stages, maybe 6th stage once in my life.

S+ on Stage 1, S on Stage 2, and a B+ on Stage 3 of Ikaruga, putting me somehwere around the 12 million mark when I died on the fourth stage.

Also getting to the second to last form of the final boss of ESPGaluda on one credit even though my score was fairly crap.
Feedback will set you free.

Getting to level 5 in DoDonPachi DOJ. I really surprised myself with that one. Even got the replay saved. Not the best chain but I'm still fairly proud of that one.

Haha, I'll counter:
Beating Stage 2 in Kyukyoku Tiger II on one credit.

Seriously though, I don't have a lot to brag with. A few decent 1cc's (Batrider Normal, Darius Gaiden Extra are the only ones really notable). I still have to decide which game to put all of my free-time on, Border Down perhaps. ;)

i didn't know anyone in the West had a legit (no save states) 2-ALL, why didn't you post a score for this?
Venom wrote: My greatests is a no miss, no DM lost clear of Dangun Feveron
yeah, that was a great feat.

i'm afraid i have nothing better than a guwange 1CC..
1CCing PCE SCD super raiden was tough too what with the 2 extra stages.

My achievements are usually blighted by some sort of technicality. For example - PAL versions being slightly easier because they run 3 frames per second slower, things like that.

I don't think I ever beat anything worth bragging about.

nothing much really.

working on a 1lc of gradius, i can get well into stage 6, but i always end up losing focus and my game goes pear shaped.

... oh how i love gradius, konami owns. screw trick or treaters, i think i'll play gofer instead.

all things considered though, i seem to be more into the "experience" then working towards a solid goal.
I have no sig whatsoever.

1CC'ed 1941: Counter Attack.

I've reached stage 7 on Giga Wing but that was on a machine that yielded 5 lives per credit. Plus I lost my last life on that stage and had to continue.
