The 2-5 stationary bee in DOJ exploding into big bee and the bg starts scrolling and the boss music starts up and he just shits bullets all over you. Never gets less glorious.

For me personally it was when I got Gunbird 2 on the DC, TATE'd it on my Sony Trinitron (the first time I'd ever TATE'd a game) and fell in love with shmups. Yes there have been great moments in my gaming history since then but this one is still up there.

+Beating Mars Matrix after a month and a half of busting my ass 2-6 hours a day nearly every day.
-Realizing that was in June of 2010 and that I've never shown anything close to that level of focus since.

+Clearing PCB Lunatic and Phantasm. That was one of the games that got me into shmups back in 2009, so it was nice to finally put it to rest.

+First time I cleared Hellsinker and the HUD blew up along with my mind.

+Realizing within a few credits that after four years of playing these games and trying to find one that really REALLY "clicked" for me and made me want to play the shit out of it no matter how horrible I am, I'd found my waifu in SDOJ.

Every Yagawa Cloud stage ever made

This. Except normal Pink Sweets, because that cloud level exists for the sole purpose of destroying every hope I (n)ever had of clearing the game.

One of my favorites is Black Heart in Garegga. Once I learned how to fight Black Heart it stopped being oh god it's Black Heart I'm gonna die and started being Black Heart yesssssssssssssssss. Seriously one of the most enjoyable bosses in any shmup. (Mk II not so much...)

Similarly, I love the fight with Shasta in Ibara. There are so many different things she can pull out that it becomes a unique fight every time.

The moment when you fly over and then descend into a hollowed out volcano in Stage 2 of Crimzon Clover, only to be trapped by this massive, intimidating crab-robot thing. The part when you fight the final boss and you explode out of the complex, only to be chased across the sky by it's second form in this intense aerial dogfight. All the CC bosses in general, really.

The sound when you pick up a full medal in Battle Garegga.

The warning sound that you hear in Darius Gaiden/G Darius when a boss is approaching.

Any time you drop a scatter bomb in Raiden DX and see the ridiculous amount of pixelated glory going into every explosion.

Missing the second loop of DOJ because I spent 8 seconds running around the room punching the air after killing Hibachi.

Actually, that's probably my worst moment.

Good moments:

The Galuda 2 stage 3 mid-boss: perfect marriage of hype and adrenaline timed to a stunning euphoric musical uplift that brings me close to orgasm.

Fighting Great Thing in the Dariusburst cabinet with the lights blaring in the darkness as the fucker rumbles on screen, before the beat starts kicking like "this is it motherfucker, do or die!"

Also I love the part on the final stage of Ikaruga when you enter into the bosses chamber and the boss appears perfectly timed to the music.

For even greater justice, speed-kill Tageri to time the boss theme perfectly with doors closing as the final part with Stone-Like begins.

Then on the other hand simply surviving Tageri's homing laser onslaught and milking the pattern for maximum score... So good.
