Pulstar 1-Life Clear Replay

Post by Ex_Mosquito »

Okay, he's a plustar No-miss replay i recorded recently. It was done on an emulator but i practiced it on the proper MVS cart, thats why some areas are a little sloppy due to the input lagg on the emulator.

I only have webspace for the first 4 levels for now, i'll take these down and upload the rest in about a weeks time. Enjoy :)

I'm downloading them now. If anyone has a decent bittorrent tracker to use, I could seed these as torrents so you can upload the next load of levels if you want?

Great replays, Ex Mosquito. Your agressive style is a lot of fun to watch.

By the way, can anybody point me to a list of what each of the powerups do or describe them here? Some of them are obvious, but there are a couple where the effects aren't really noticable to me.

Heya thanks, glad you enjoyed them:). The remaing levels should be up soon.

As far as the icons go.

Weapons
P = Laser
P = Pink barrier (also the letter P but depending on where you pick it up it can either be the laser or barrier, dunno why:x perhaps someone knows? )
N = Green spread (best)
T = Rear Laser (useless tbh, only useful for the mothership on level 3 and level 6 boss)
R = Ripple - Thin blue focused beam (very strong thin focused shot but need to have a good aim to get the most out of it, only good for the last boss tbh)

Missiles
M = Very stong forward shooting missile, good for bosses.
H = Homing missile, good for catching weaker enemies.
B = More of a bomb than a missile really, i didnt find this very useful.

Others
S = Speed-up (i find it best to max out, also more fun!)
C = Speeds up charge shot
I = High/Low option. Can be locked into position with B button.

Yeah, the two P powerups were confusing me, especially in level 2. Sometimes it's the bouncy R-type laser, sometimes it's not. Thanks for clarifying that.

Also, the spot you pick to sit in at the start of the stage 4 boss made me laugh. I think there are only about a hundred other places where you're less likely to get hit. But hey, if you can pull it off, why not?

I'll leave the first 5 levels on my isp webspace for now to save on the bandwidth.

Hope you enjoy them

Big thanks again to Icarus :)

hah actually it isnt all that impressive because the snake cant actually hit you :) I just got bored of always moving around aimlessly waiting for the the boss to properly come on so i thought why not make it look a little more stylish. :)

Hahaha, every time I got to the boss I was always very carefull not to bump into anything, I just assumed it was an obstacle to avoid. Well, you had me fooled.

Pulstar has humbled me so many times it's not even funny, it's good to see someone finally put that game in it's place. I love the R-Type feel to it, so I don't mind getting humbled by it.

Something that I noticed, which also applies to your Metal Slug vids, is that the play is very tight. It must have taken quite a long time to manipulate the games with that amount of perfection.

Do you take us for fools? It is humanly impossible to one-life Pulstar. Go away, liar! :evil:

(but seriously, kudos for j00)

R = Ripple - Thin blue focused beam (very strong thin focused shot but need to have a good aim to get the most out of it, only good for the last boss tbh)
F=Flip Laser (3 angled reflective shots)
R=Ring Laser (triple ring piercing shot)
N=Spread Beam (pretty self explanatory)
T=Homing Laser (fire purple wind lasers under rapid fire)
P=Break Laser (creates a shield that increase in size under rapid fire)

Weapon icons always appear in the exact same locations.

The C Icon not only increases the charge speed of the Surger Shot, but also allows you to hit rapid max faster with fewer button taps.

The Spread Bomb (B Icon) can be fired in whichever direction you are holding the joystick at the time it is fired (has a tendancy to be diagonal).

Well its all in the controller really. Sanwa sticks are so effortless and nice to use it's almost as if its wired directly to the brain. :?

Freaking nice.

Best I could do was a 1-life to stage 5, then I hit a huge brick wall.

Good stuff, Ex-M. Pulstar is always a huge challenge, and seeing someone take it on in one life is impressive stuff. Well done ^_^

Impressive. Your agressive style is the opposite to what I'm doing but since I can't get past stage 4 yet maybe I should adjust my style a bit.

I've dl'd only up to stage 5, don't wanna spoil it for myself. Can I ask how many hours you roughly put into the game to get this confident ?

well i bought the mvs cart off ebay at the end of august so it took roughly 2 months, thats playing at least 10 hours a week at one and a half hours a day. So about 100 hours total over 2 months.

The game isnt that hard tbh, once you have a route worked out and the enemy placements memorized theres not much that can catch you out, then its just the matter of executing it all in one go.
