The next 'hell's frozen over' localization: Hatsune Miku!

Post by cj iwakura »

Sega have either lost their minds or are still the best kind of crazy.

Fantastic news, though this bit concerns me a little:
-This is a definite buy for me (I like vocaloids quite a lot, and you made a great choice here), but I do have a question. It sounds like most of the songs will be in Japanese… are you putting in any kind of subtitles (perhaps large ones, in the background) to make it easy for players to understand what’s being said? Or will we just be hearing it, mostly without understanding?
-It’s a little too early for me to comment on this yet, but we will have more news on this front in the future!
Anyway, for the unfamiliar, it's a rhythm game kind of similar to DJ MAX or Beatmania. Keysounded tracks that you play with the PS face buttons, and if you do really well, the song gets an extended version.

A demo hits the US PSN this month, and there's already one on the J-PSN if you're feeling adventurous.

There seem to be some English screens here.

The subs will probably be romanized, like Yakuza's karaoke.

Well hey, Space Channel 5 worked pretty well for them, might as well make the same game again.

Speaking as a huge SC5 fan, this game is wildly different.

A while ago I made a JP account and downloaded a bunch of demos. This game's demo was by far the one I liked the most, still have it installed in the HD. It's pretty entertaining, even though I'm not into JP songs.

As usual, will get it once I cut down my backlog a bit.

I also DLed the Japanese demo and generally enjoyed it, though as a not-exactly-legendary rhythm game player I found the timing/scoring pretty strict when it came to earning a passing grade for a song...maybe I just needed more practice. Also, apparently the Vita version runs at 60 FPS while this one only runs at 30...weird. Anyways, the US is getting a physical release, so I'm definitely going to support Sega on this one.

yeah, game is nothing like SC5

I have the vita game - it's pretty awesome once you get over/into the styling. Some of the music will never ever be palatable....

I've played the full game at a couple conventions. It looks really confusing at first, with notes coming in all over the place, however once you hear the song a few times it's not too hard to follow. You can alternate using the D-pad and buttons to hit notes faster, which is a nice touch. I don't care for those vocaloid voices though, which is a shame considering that's one of the main selling points.

I was reading the fan translation blog for Valkyria Chronicles III, read this:
Sorry for a lack of updates, but I promise there’ll be something for you all soon-ish. It’s not F5 worthy right now, but there will be something. Don’t want to promise too much, since I don’t want to burn the bridge before I cross the stream.

Hint.
Thought: Sega can't be crazy enough to license a fan translation. This news however makes me realize Sega is currently acting crazy. Yai for Sega acting crazy.

Wish they would localize the Vita version of Project Diva f though, all the PS3 content is already available by importing, but there's no good solution for accessing the JP DLC on a US account Vita.

oh right I was going to post in this topic to correct this:
Also, apparently the Vita version runs at 60 FPS while this one only runs at 30...weird.
Vita version is 30 FPS and I think it has framerate drops, PS3 version seems smoother to me (still obviously 30 FPS though).

People were disappointed because past PS3 releases ran at 60 FPS, not because the Vita version did.

It's also disappointing that neither the Vita nor PS3 version have leaderboards.

I also dislike having the star notes mapped to the analog stick. The touchscreen is far better for that mechanic, in my opinion. I think this is due to how they adjusted the timing for it. On the Vita touchscreen, the timing is loose enough for the mechanic to feel unintrusive. But on the PS3 version, it really feels like they adjusted the timing for the analog notes to be way more strict, thus making it feel like a nuisance. Though I've only played the demo of the PS3 version, so perhaps they changed it in the final one.

The lack of leaderboards combined with the framerate (plus the prioritization of resolution over framerate), really gives me the impression that Sega now considers the Diva ports to be first and foremost elaborate PV simulators. They must really not want the ports to eat away at the arcade version's popularity.

There's a sequel announced to the 3DS game btw. Probably less appeal for them outside of Japan than Project Diva though.

I can't for the life of me understand how anyone with a properly functioning pair of ears could like this vocaloid crap. :?

Demo's live now. Same as the JP one: World's End Dance Hall, Tengaku, and Weekender Girl.

I tried the demo. The gameplay mechanics were okay, but the music is unbearable. I can see the appeal of a relatively affordable virtual instrument like a vocaloid for the amateur composer, but I expected much better results from professionally produced songs used in a retail game. I haven't heard voice samples so unconvincing since the 90s. What a load of crap.

I'm pretty sure people only like vocaloids for the robo waifus.

I think it's garbage myself, but there was a Hijokaidan album that featured Miku screaming like Junko Hiroshige. You really can't beat that.

I have managed to avoid Vocaloid/Hatsune Miku all this time, but i bought the 3DS game (poor) and the Vita game (fantastic) - the music ranges from utterly annoying and dreadful, to some that are surprisingly mildly bearable.

The game took time to click, but once you start playing the harder levels it all falls into place quite nicely.

For anyone interested in rhythm games looking for something to play - i'd recommend this but, yeah, with the caveat that you're going to probably dislike 80% of the tracks.

Cannot argue with the amount of content - something like 38 tracks, lots of extras (although some wayyyy deep into uguu territory)

I loved the mods of the Domino's ad. I can't find the original mod though.
