Finally got the Generation NEX console...
I'm just a little irritated with it so please bear with me. I was initially going to post and tell you guys how wonderful it is after I got done playing Fnal Fantasy III on it without a hitch. Then I decided to try the few NES games I had on it (wisely avoided re-building my collection of NES carts until I knew how good it worked).
First up was Destiny of an Emperor. No go. So I cleaned it. No go. I clean and clean and clean until there was no more residue on it. I hear the music but all I could see on the screen were colored squares or a white screen. At this point I'm mad, but I just decided to try another game. Pop in Dragon Warrior. Nothing but a yellow screen with this one, and I cleaned it before I even tried it. Dragon Warrior II... Same problem with Destiny of an Emperor. Blocks of doom accompanied by the music from the game. I cleaned the games over and over. Tried again and again. I might as well have bought a toaster model (which would've been cheaper) if I wanted to have "fun" trying to get games to work. What's funny is that the Famicom cart is the only that works perfectly and it looked like it was in worse shape than the NES carts. The damn instruction manual implies that if they don't work after cleaning the cartridge is broken... LOL
I don't know guys, I'm gonna email their customer service and see if there is anything I can do. I don't wanna have to hunt down sealed copies of NES games just to play them on this thing. These games would most likely boot up on a toaster model by now...

Very disappointing news this is.
Heck no, it should not be a case of how old the carts are/needing a ton of cleaning. That's part of what the system is suppsed to fix, no more blinking and no more need for blowing on carts, ect. I'm glad I waited until someone bought one before I splurged.
edit: I am linking this thread in TNL NES thread on this. Hope ya don't mind.

Don't mind at all man. Link away! Sunday I'm going to have a friend bring over some NES carts and the original NES for testing. If I have the same problem I will be getting my money back (or maybe a replacement but I'm not sure I want it one anymore). After patiently waiting through all the freakin delays I finally get it and my worst fears are realized. >_<

Yeah, I'd deifnitely get your money back if his carts don't work. I'd be hopping mad if I was you. Messiah has posted a compatibility list. Says 95% of games are supposed to work. Hmmmm:

I'll never buy it. Sad. What's the point of making such hardware if it won't work with every NES and Famicom game?snap monkey wrote:Of course, if it can't play any game...
I was actually excited by this thing until I just now read that "95% of the games are supposed to work". 95%? Supposed to? Please. I have a NES that works for 100% of the games made for it and a Famicom ain't that expensive. I heard those work with 100% of the games made for them as well.

As soon as I get my money back from them, I'm definitely gonna go with the official top loading model. It averages about $20 more than this paperweight I got... -_-;
I should've just got that in the first place but they made this thing sound so awesome.

DAMN! This Famiclone was going to be the solution to my NES woes. Damn. Damn. Damn.
Thanks for the heads up, Cecil. I'm sorry for all of us, but esp. you, as you have to deal with getting a refund etc.
So the top-loading models don't have such trouble with loading, etc.? Should I be looking for one of these?

Yeah, but you'll want to look for one of the official Nintendo top loaders. A lot of people on eBay try to market their famiclone crap as "NES top loader". The one you want looks like this: http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/2981 ... oad2lm.jpg Sorry for the bad photo. It's the only one I have with a pic of my top loader in it.professor ganson wrote:So the top-loading models don't have such trouble with loading, etc.? Should I be looking for one of these?

Such a shame. Some time ago I was considering waiting for NEX to be released, but I ended up getting a real Famicom (second model, looks exactly the same like the one in superhitachi4's picture, but with AV out) instead. A good decision, especially in light of this.

The Jap Famicom is the same as the U.S. top loading NES? Never heard of this. Could you post a pic, I am really curious about this, pardon my ignorance...Ghegs wrote:Such a shame. Like superhitachi4 already explained, it's still a Famicom on the inside. Plus it reads "Family Computer" on the front. But damn if it doesn't look sexy. And having AV output makes a huge difference over having just the RF plug like in the top-loading NES. I understand many people have modded the latter to include AV out.

Indeed. How hard is the Jap system to find? Can it be easily modded to play U.S. carts or is a converter cart the better route?Ghegs wrote:Ask and ye shall receive.Dylan1CC wrote: The Jap Famicom is the same as the U.S. top loading NES? And thanks for the pic.
I don't know about the modding, I have no interest in US games. In fact, Recca is my only game for the system so far, but I might increase my Famicom collection at some point. I guess a similar converter to what people use to play Fami games on their NES systems could exist. Only, y'know, the other way around.Dylan1CC wrote:Indeed. How hard is the Jap system to find? Finding the system isn't terribly hard. There are few on eBay right now, just search for "famicom av", but they're stupidly expensive. I paid something like $100 for mine and that included 2 controllers, AV cable, AC adapter (the latter two weren't originally included when the system was sold in stores) AND shipping.

It's complete. And yes, it was hideously expensive. Easily the most money I've ever spent on a single game.Turrican wrote:Gorgeous. How much did Recca cost to you Ghegs? Was it cart-only or...?

Thanks much, superhitachi4! I love that picture. Really nice looking stuff. I especially like the green DC-- I haven't seen it before.superhitachi4 wrote:Yeah, but you'll want to look for one of the official Nintendo top loaders. Sure, anytime. I think Ghegs's pic was a more detailed example of a top loader though.professor ganson wrote:Thanks much, superhitachi4!

Oh man, this really is bad news!
I would get on Ebay and purchase an NES with a new PIN installed-it will last you for years; I would never get a Top-Loading NES-those don't even have AV output, and reportedly have other display issues as well-not too great considering the absurd amount of money they cost. A NES with a new PIN would be much less expensive. Or better yet, go down to a Game Force store, or get on Ebay, and get your self one of the FC "Famiclones"; they are certainly more compatible then the NEX is, and they come with a Famicom-NES cartridge converter.
Or just wait for the Revolution-NES, SNES, and N64 downloads-no imports, but that's still going to be a heck of a lot of old Nintendo gameplay!

Good idea; please let us know what their response is FRO!FRO wrote:I e-mailed Messiah Entertainment to see if they plan on either firmware upgrades or revision releases of the console to fix compatibility problems. We'll see what kind of response I get...
BTW, isn't there another Nintendo-clone coming out from a different company? I'm pretty certain that I've heard about one, but I cannot recall the name of it.
