Anyone collect vintage CRT TV's ?

Post by Rob79 »

Anyone collect vintage CRT portable TV's ?
I started to collect vintage portable color tv's.
I usually get them for free, rescue from garbage or pay very little for them.
Here's a few that I got recently:

Here's my vintage 1978 Simpsons-Sears (Sanyo) Model 14062 9" Color TV
Got this locally here in Toronto
Works and shows like new.
Made in Japan.
Manufactured April 1978

The same model tv was used in the 1997 Titanic movie at the beginning when old Rose was watching TV.

The Hitachi is cool. Strong Nintendo-vibe. Very similar to what Nintendo used in 86/87 to advertise the NES.

Do you recognize the TV at 24 seconds of this youtube clip ?

It's the "Titanic" set, that is, it's the same model Old Rose is watching at the beginning of the 1997 Movie.

That Hitachi and the Trinitron are fantastic. Very 80s :)

Memories of watching TV in the 80s :D ! What is with the combination of silver and wood effect that they loved so much?

Good on you for rescuing poor CRTs from the dump. I only ever chucked those out which stopped working properly after years of loyal service, but people just bin fully functioning ones

i'm not a collector by any means but i have a 9inch crt to use with my supergun :D it's amazing because i just keep it next to my computer in my desk, no need for different stations
Diane... it's 7:30 a.m. over at the shmup forums, the locals seem to be nice and friendly, i've stopped over at the off topic forum and they have nice conversation and a damn good coffee, and the trading station is worth a stop.

Those retro CRT TVs are cool for their time. Even the 9" Sony Trinitrons NTSC-based TVs from the early 1990s are ace. Too bad the current American TV airwaves are tuned for digital HDTV setup but there're a few TV stations that broadcast on the old-school analog UHF airwaves.

Heck, even watching some of those UHF-based TV stations with an NEC Turbo Express handheld with the optional Turbo Vision TV adapter is fun from time to time. Has the obligatory A/V 1/8" input jack for more robust usage/functionality.

I wonder if someone will ever put up a small business of CRT TVs of SD definition and top quality build, selling on-demand, for our needs.

Sony even made a dedicated 5" NTSC-based CRT Trinitron TV set & only 500 were manufactured worldwide back in the early 1990s. It was priced at a whopping $499.99 USD though when it was released in limited quantities for the American speciality electronics chains like the Good Guys, etc. It was really small and compact enough to fit inside a insulated 6-pack soda carrying case if it needed be.

Yep, using the combination of wood and silver was the in-thing with the TV manufacturers back in the early 1980s and beyond.

I love them all. If I had space I'd probably do the same thing and give crt's loving homes. Unfortunately it's not really practical or possible to fit them into a small flat without making the place look cluttered.

Ive wanted to find one of those older wooden flip door projection based sets with dead projectors. Take out all of the dead stuff and mount a flat panel in/on it somehow and use the lower portion for game storage.

I hate seeing all of those old sets get canned- they're neat.

1979 Panasonic CT-778 Quintrix II Color Portable TV
my grandparents had a black and white variant of this that had a smaller screen and was elongated.

I used to use it with whatever games machine i had when i stopped over - happy memories and something sexy about the design.

It doesn't seem to have the buttons necessary to work the service menu of newer Wegas, at least.

I've always fancied old 50s CRTs that come built into those furniture units. I once nearly bought one that formerlly belonged to Peter Cushing, strangely, but decided I just didn't have the space. I already have too many 50s and 60s fans, radios, record players and even an old cigarette machine from that era.

On a related note, I recently stumbled upon this wonderfully amateurish website devoted to a guys VCR collection. Check out the Fisher Price PXL-2000; it uses music cassette tapes for video!

do they actually still work - in the sense that they can really be used for watching TV ? Over here in Europe analogue terrestrial broadcasts have been shut off years ago and analogue cable is going down the same road pretty soon.

Yes, hook up cable and voila.
Or buy a Digital to Analog converter box and it works on air for free.

Anybody here own a Philips Discoverer?

When I was a kid I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I really think it's a benchmark of 80s design.
