I think something is trying to keep me away from Doom
So... here's the lowdown...
I boot up my PC, inspired by recent discussions here, and try to play Doom... it crashes. I figure its because I'm playing it in DOS, and... well if I explained all the particulars, we'd be here all day (I'll explain if someone asks). So I boot into Windows 98 and play using Chocolate Doom. So far so good... but my computer chair sucks and my back starts to hurt after like an hour, so I have to stop.
Then I say "I have a Nintendo 64, I'll play that instead!" and I do indeed have Doom 64. On my television it appears a little too dark (a flaw with my television in general) but I can see well enough to play it. I configure my controls and start a new game, shoot my first zombie-soldier...
And the game crashes.
A fucking cartridge-based console game CRASHED.
How. The. Fuck.
HOW THE FLYING FUCK.
Seriously, is God trying to tell me not to play Doom? Why?

God doesn't care. :[ consolation
Play Doom 32X, that one can crash too! (complete with "STACK_OVERFLOW_ERR" text for the REAL PC FEEL)
I have no time for anything but Brutal DOOM via gzDOOM these days. Vanilla DOOM monster behaviour is so boring. You can even use the brilliant N64DOOM and PS1DOOM/II soundtracks, though I like my doomin' silent but for carnage.

How about a REAL MOD instead of the overhyped and overpopular brutal doom? I have one! It's called Soulcrusher.BIL wrote:God doesn't care. :[ consolation

Here, it requires gzdoom. There's the screenshots and the trailer if you want to see what it is.

I know you've posted about being unhappy with BDOOM's hype in the past, and since then I've gotten kind of sick of its public image myself. However, it's actually because it's not a very extensive mod to the base game that I like it. I just want the classic maps with nastier monsters and weapons, and BDOOM delivers superbly on both. Also, I've wanted to gib Cacos and Barons since I was ten.
The extended gore-porn aspects that seem to get most of its public adulation can fuck off tomorrow for all I care, honestly.

In fact, you should probably do that.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: I think something is trying to keep me away from Doom
I'd strongly suggest starting with a computer version of Doom 1 episode 1 and not a console version, except for that great XBox 360 port which even has cooperative split screen play.
Doom 64 is OK but can be tedious and cheap in the way that later FPS games got to be (like, "oh the player won't see *this* coming lololololol!"). It's a lot more atmospheric tricks/trapish and a lot less frantic run 'n gun enemy herding, too.
Anyway, one great thing about Doom is that it's very playable with a normal controller if you're adverse to using mouse+kb, so if that's what you're worried about when playing a computer version, no worries!

I can get ZDoom to load, but not GZDoom, and when I tried to start ZDoom with the Brutal mod, everything just went to hell. Sucks. I've been reading posts here and there about Brutal Doom for a while now, and I figured I'd give it a try today when SDOJ started pissing me off. NOPE.

I kind of wonder how this happens. ZDOOM, making sure it's organized correctly and working ahead of time, and then installing BD on top of that. I forget, but it might be as simple as dragging the BD WAD over the executable.CptRansom wrote:I can get ZDoom to load, but not GZDoom, and when I tried to start ZDoom with the Brutal mod, everything just went to hell. With DOOM ports, I've taken towards just making a new directory when trying out tricky mods. It helps to keep things organized and from there being any possibility of conflicts or things getting lost.
Re: I think something is trying to keep me away from Doom
Just dragging the .pk3 and nothing but a ton of red text and what might as well be an ASCII middle finger. I'll keep messing with it and Googling stuff and hope something works.

Have you checked the FAQ? A bit obvious I know but there's some helpful stuff in there (I needed it when upgrading to the latest ver).

Did you make sure to have the right DOOM WAD in the directory as well? It needs either DOOM or DOOM II, and there might be some incompatibility with particular revisions of the WAD. Unfortunately DOOM WAD version management it kind of tricky since they are just labeled like DOOM.WAD, instead of DOOM_1666.WADCptRansom wrote:Just dragging the .pk3 and nothing but a ton of red text and what might as well be an ASCII middle finger. However, I think I found the issue... I had accidentally set multiple commands to the same button (stupid N64 controller making it easy to forget the L button exists). The last time I played I made double-dog-sure to make sure there were no repeats, and I was able to go like five stages (taking an average 5-10 minutes per stage since this is basically my first time thru) and there were no crashes. I think I'm set now.
Was this directed at me? I've played PC Doom before. I've beaten (on "Hurt Me Plenty") all four eps of Doom 1 and the main campaign of Doom 2 (Final Doom has yet to be tackled). This was vanilla doom, BTW--I only use source ports for custom WADs.louisg wrote:I'd strongly suggest starting with a computer version of Doom 1 episode 1 and not a console version, except for that great XBox 360 port which even has cooperative split screen play.

I might try this "Brutal Doom" thing though just to see what it is, but I'm a purist at heart.
Anyway, I bought Doom 64 simply because... well... it's more Doom, classic flavor (I can't stand Doom 3). Never really touched most of the other console ports because they're all just levels from the PC game (although according to Happy Video Game Nerd, Doom for PSX has redesigned or in some cases entirely new levels, so I might pick that one up), but Doom 64 is all-new levels.
Although I hear now that someone ported Doom 64 to the PC...

Re: I think something is trying to keep me away from Doom
Yeah, I am too - not to the point of putting up with boredom for the sake of principle, though. I wholeheartedly recommend BD to purists who've worn out the vanilla DOOM, II & Final WADs over the decades and want more intensity and flexibility from their tired monsters and weapons. It's genuinely better than the original games. I play with taunts, jumping and crouching disabled - it's easy to forget you're playing a mod at all, until you go back to VDOOM and suddenly need to drop the soap for most monsters to have a chance of killing you. Despite all your weapons now firing rock salt.Edmond Dantes wrote:I might try this "Brutal Doom" thing though just to see what it is, but I'm a purist at heart.
There are Total Conversions of the N64 and PlayStation DOOMs for PC (search "The Absolution" for N64), definitely the better method of trying out those interesting but ultimately inferior games. Or you can just get their soundtracks (definitely their enduringly best feature, good creepy stuff) in WAD format and play them through gzdoom+BD.

Re: I think something is trying to keep me away from Doom
Just mentioning it since, when you recalled DOOM being about hundreds of monsters rushing you in the MS-DOS topic, BDOOM is a lot nearer to that than VDOOM. You won't actually get hundreds-monster battles in any of the original trilogy's levels (unless you deliberately engineer them with lots of running back and forth in the most crowded stages... like I used to as a kid, UV+IDDQD+IDSPISPOPD, whip around then return to start and quicksave for custom-made clusterfuck). But with Brutal DOOM's monster behaviour, they will certainly rush you. Even a handful of zombiemen will tear your ass apart if you're not on the ball.
Incidentally, the Doom II MegaWAD (total 32-map game replacement) "Scythe" includes a few levels with certifiably batshit numbers of monsters attacking (two of the later maps in particular, "Fear*" and "Fire and Ice"). It's a great experience, but definitely made for battle-scarred DOOMers who know the games inside-out want to overcome a sadistic challenge. Teleportation onto a Partial Invisibility in a tiny pen surrounded by Cyberdemons about sums it up.

Re: I think something is trying to keep me away from Doom
I'm guessing perception changes due to your familiarity with this Brutal Doom thing (which is one reason I want to play it now), but Vanilla certainly does have areas with tons of monsters, even in the main game, as long as you're avoiding the easier two difficulty levels.BIL wrote:Just mentioning it since, when you recalled DOOM being about hundreds of monsters rushing you in the MS-DOS topic, BDOOM is a lot nearer to that than VDOOM. In fact, I recall there being a level in The Plutonia Experiment (Final Doom) which is almost nothing but secret walls opening up and there being hordes of HOLY SHIT YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME monsters waiting to scorch you.
That being said...

Yeah, but not hundreds from all directions - you need a PWAD like Scythe for that level of Robotron 2084 madness.Edmond Dantes wrote:Vanilla certainly does have areas with tons of monsters, even in the main game, as long as you're avoiding the easier two difficulty levels.
And no, there are no perception issues on my end. BD doesn't change anything regarding monster numbers, item distribution, map design, etc. It's the same maps with the same numbers, only these enemies will consistently attack instead of ambling towards you throwing the odd fireball.
I don't think I've ever actually tried the latter two games of the trilogy on less than UV. I know I'd become comatose if I played the first on lower. For all I know the three weenie modes could have more monsters to make up for lower HP, or some other horse shit. Wolf3D's EZ-MODE mugshot of BJ in a baby bonnet and pacifier made its mark on me early.
...Wolf3D also added the word "incarnate" to my vocabulary. As in I am Death Incarnate /burningredeyes. Edutainment!

Looking at the features list, jDOOM's main draw over ZDoom is that it implements a bunch of ugly shit, and since it's not ZDoom I'm guessing it's not going to be as widely compatible.
But maybe I'm speaking from ignorance.
If I wanted 3D lighting and models I could easily go to GZDoom instead, though.
ZDoom is pretty nice although the huge lists of compatibility flags can be confusing to the novice.
Re: I think something is trying to keep me away from Doom
Doom 64 should be played on a PC. The N64 version is terrible in comparison.
"The Absolution" is a terribly inaccurate total conversion, so don't play that. Doom64 EX is what you want.
