This is *exactly* the problem I was referring to...Sticky Pedal Syndrome. Do you know how annoying it can be to be playing the game, taking your foot off the pedal, *not* ducking, and then, after being shot or damaged or whatever, hearing the *click* of the pedal returning to its home position?

That gets old *instantly*. I think it might be a lot more common here in Michigan than other places due to the salt we use during the winter months.

Then it must be, it's very uncommon here, sadly the closest TC3 to me suffers from this, and the aim is at least 6 inches off to the right :(

Ahh, this is a true tale of Michigan. Haven't tried my luck with gun games much but this sounds like something that could happen.

Hey, we get a freebie on classic cars not rusting out in summer months like you'd expect in California or Florida...it evens out I'd say. Gonna be humid tomorrow, though.

*Tomorrow*? Dude, it was swelteringly humid *today*. Rained for 36 hours straight and then when the sun finally *did* pop out, it was just stinking awful outside. I had to be out working in it, too.

Ah, Michigan. At least our versions of acts of God are remarkably tame compared to most other areas of the country and world.

Cleared some of the OutRun 2SP's easiest routes yesterday (though I can't say it was a particulary tough challenge for an arcade car game of its time). On the PS2, if that counts.
Ending cutscenes reminded me of F-Zero GX cinematics. The latter made me pretty pleased with myself when I won Grand Prix and could tell my mom "I'm about to be on the TV".

Metal Slug series except 5 on the hardest settings (Sandmarine boss ALWAYS. get me even on easy!)
Worldcombat/warzaid
Time Crisis 2 3 4
Razing Storm
Wartran Troopers
House of the Dead 4
GHOST Squad
Silent Scope 2
Lethal Enforcers 3 / Seigi no hero 3

As you can see, I'm usually playing gun games only. And somebody mentioned about how hard metal slug 3 is. I gotta agree, it took me 6 months to 1cc it and another four to no miss, and that's only once. Stage 5 has too many death traps coming at you repeatedly, although I still hate all the bosses except the first one.
This is my signature. It's so unique, nobody else has it.

Metal Slug 3's fourth boss is the one I despise the most, from a no-miss perspective. Specifically for the ranked-up version of its golden needles. Which it'll sometimes never do, and other times, do constantly... what a nerve-wracking attack that is. No refuge. I'm glad it doesn't show up any later in the game than it does.

The last boss's upward-drifting bullets would be just as bad, especially coming right at the end of the run, but you've got vehicle exit invincibility to help you through that.

It's Slug 3's last stage that drives me crazy. I feel as though it's really too difficult (and too long) and unbalances the game like a fat ass. Otherwise Slug 3 is godly in terms of design, and would have given the first a serious run for its money. Kind of a shame, bugs me.

MS3 would be a lot less of a trial to 1CC without the three over-long shooter segments in the Final Mission. Without them it'd be a longer than usual but still tight gauntlet - with them, it's a tight gauntlet with a ton of interstitial padding to chew through, and that padding can kill you if you're at all unwary (the vert sections are a pain without autofire, too, the only point in the whole game where the firing ceiling is suddenly a chore to hit). It's not like the game was lacking in content anyway, with all the hidden paths earlier on. MSX is by far the better-planned of the two "excess Slugs" after the first's perfect streamlined model.

I still can't hate MS3's Final Mission, though. Excess that ludicrous is admirable in itself when it's carried off with artistry of Nazca/SNK's calibre. It's a monstrous sendoff.

Definitely, especially the last boss fight. Epic.

I tip my hat to SNK for going all out (and without the crippling slowdown) I just feel as though somewhere in the directorial dept. someone should have called for an edit on that last stage and excised entire sections. As you said, it's still enormously long without the STG bits. All in all, it kind of scrapes the shine off of how sweet the first four stages are, with their multi-paths and whatnot.

It's still an amazing game, however. Between it and MSX it's a tough call - I think I'd still give MS3 the edge.

After the awesomeness of parts 1 and X, Metal Slug 3 is like that third helping of Thanksgiving stuffing. It's the same tasty goodness, but less satisfying, pretty exhausting and ultimately unnecessary.

I don't really like Metal Slug 3. It's overlong, with lots of unnecessary and dull moments. 1 and X are much more focused, better designed and always remain interesting.

I will say one thing for MS3 - for all its rambling and grandstanding, when it's good it's really fucking good, particularly in the Final Mission's boss battles and setpieces within the ship. Lethal hopskotch with the ring laserers, fighting off an innumerable swarm of suicide-bombing bugs, grenade-disgorging giant walkers that'll splatter you if you're underneath their falling hulls, the cocoon battle and its army of flamethrower zombies that'll incinerate you for a split-second's hesitance, huddling in trenches as the super zombies attempt to obliterate you in full-screen torrents of blood, smashing down the doors keeping you locked in the disintegrating ship with them until you can finally "blow them out the goddamn airlock!" and escape, blowing a mortal gash through the ship's hull in the process... that's not including Rootmars round 1, whose screen-devouring pattern is about as riveting as "run left, run right" can possibly be and Rootmars round 2, one of the ultimate FUCK OR WALK moments for a no-miss run.

It's so easy to die suddenly and horribly at any point in that fifteen-minute stretch of terror, leaving a charred corpse crumpling to the floor. Making it through alive feels like surviving the most ludicrous action movie never filmed. I've no-missed MS3 exactly once, and I don't plan to do it again any time soon. My heart was pounding like crazy. It lacks consistent entertainment value compared to the first two (MSX's Train, China and New Godokin St. stages play more smoothly than any of MS3's and are way cooler to look at, just to name three, and although they can't hope to match the insane scale of MS3's Final Mission, MS1 and X's are climactic in their own right while remaining devoid of flab). But as the ultimate 2D run n' gun torture test, and also the single most astonishing example of world-saving bravado in the genre, I consider it essential.

If I had to choose a favourite, it'd be X. Perfect balance of MS1's concise flow and MS3's imagination, tougher difficulty level and more extreme firepower. It looks and sounds better than either too - more colour and detail than MS1's stoical gunmetal motif, and there's none of the scene fracturing MS3's multiple paths can create (see stage 4's multi-purpose Egyptian / South American desert). The Afghan and Chinese stages are particularly complete-feeling with their rolling, hyper-detailed scenery and total lack of interruptions.

Nice! I play Haggar and I can never get that tactic to work. I do it like this. I find it works pretty consistently for me.

Okay, so what I gather from the two of you and your YT videos is that my *first* basic mistake is always choosing Guy. Would that be a valid assumption?

If you don't credit feed it you won't have that impression. The only unnecessary bits are on the last stage. The preceding four are quite beautifully designed, regardless of path - and the variety the multiple routes bring to the game can't be overstated.

It might have the best overall boss roster in the series too.

X doesn't beat 1 for me though (although the Hong Kong stage is probably one of the series best).
I'm not too crazy about the alien subplot as opposed to the pure militarism of Nazca's incredible debut. I also think Slug 1 is the perfect blend of stage design and set pieces, with more variety than X: Tanks falling from crumbling mountainsides, levelling entire buildings, snowy outposts, soldiers being blasted into the screen, half submerged ocean liners and an insane last stage... floats my boat.

The tactic I posted works just fine with Guy. There's no wrong character to pick, you just need to find the one that suits your style more.

I originally started with Guy but found that I can get much farther with Cody. I stick with him mainly because he's so good with the knife. As for Haggar...he's very popular but I can't do shit with him.

Your way of managing Sodom is very different from mine but I see it works just fine. That's why I like seeing playthroughs from different people, everyone finds a different way of handling enemies.
