Recommended Anime/Manga?

a friend of mine wants to start reading horror manga, as I'm a big scaredy cat, I don't know anything about such things.

What ones would be good to get him to check out?

The Junji Ito stuff is really good. Uzumaki and Gyo, etc.

Also Hideshi Hino's stuff (about 16 volumes or so were published in English). The art style is very cartoonish, but the stories are truly menacing.

A lot of Suehiro Maruo's works could also be classified as horror, though it is generally held to be the best example of ero-guro (erotic-grotesque).

These were the exact three authors I was going to list D: Some Maruo stuff is a lot less guro than others, but I'm not sure if much of his stuff has been published in English (aside that shit Creation put out)

Masaaki Nakayama does some extremely creepy and extremely short stories.

yep, Fuan no Tane and Fuan no Tane+ are really good, scary shit.
Ito is a must if you want horror.

yep I've read all the extant scanlations of that and it is ace (basically apart from the actual romance type bits).
It's up there with the Gihren Plot one as my fave Gundam manga I've read

watching G Gundam with my kids, I have to say, I don't dislike it, but I don't know - I don't think it's as much 'fun' as I thought it would be.

The other day I watched the first three parts to Genocyber - you know, the parts that actually deal with the Genocyber.

It was really cool, disturbing, brutal stuff - not nearly as bad as so many "worst anime ever" posts would have you believe, though not necessarily something I'd jump to recommend. I'm unsure I want to watch the last two parts because for one, Manga UK didn't dub it, so they clearly didn't think it worth their time (!!!), and two, the aforementioned lack of continuity with the eponymous monster.

I've been trying to find a torrent or video or something of the Manga UK dub of AD Police Files, to see their take, and because I love their dubs in general - in this particular case they apparently call the Boomers of bubblegum crisis fame Voomers! Aside from that slip-up, Manga UK dubs are usually entertaining, to really good (see: Cyber City Oedo 808).

But - it's proving thus far to be an elusive find.

First bit of Genocyber is awesome stuff. Lots of brutality and some pretty taboo stuff. Damn shame the last half is a stinker.

Even if you're just a fan of almost anything 80s-early 90s OVA, it's practically unwatchable. Really, really boring, and almost nothing happens. I have no idea what they could have been thinking.

Just finished Hikaru no Go (including the "North Star Cup" TV special--I skipped the first two specials since they're a Clip Show and an extended filler, respectively).

I will NEVER see an anime that good ever again. "Good" not just in pure entertainment value--after all, a mere drug can make you happier for a bit--but "good" as in "it makes me feel like I finally understand something that never made sense before."

But I'll keep searching. There must be more anime like that out there!

I just finished Future GPX Cyber Formula, which is what the doujin racing game I got a little while ago is based on. Very entertaining, and funny how the series hits almost every Gundam-trope as it goes, starting from how the underaged protagonist gets his hands on a powerful machine created by his father and ends up having to pilot it...but then, it's from the same studio that created Gundam.

You gave me a real blast from the past with this. I used to see it in my local comic store when I was a kid and wonder what it was all about. Never got around to finding out... until now. Reading this currently (up to volume 4) and it's really fantastic. The short story concept is great, and it's real hard sci-fi - seems like the author is well read on scientific theory. Reminds me very much of some of the old classic TV shows that dipped into sci-fi themes (Twilight Zone/Outer Limits), and the Lucifer story was immense.

Yukinobu Hoshino is one of the best manga authors. His historical fiction (from what I've read so far, mostly WW2 focused) stuff is great too.

Reading this currently (up to volume 4) and it's really fantastic. The short story concept is great, and it's real hard sci-fi - seems like the author is well read on scientific theory. Reminds me very much of some of the old classic TV shows that dipped into sci-fi themes (Twilight Zone/Outer Limits), and the Lucifer story was immense.

And most importantly the artwork of Yukinobu Hoshino. There is something about his art that I really enjoy when I read all volumes of 2001 Nights (I was able to get the other volumes to complete my set). I guess his hyper detail art on ship design draws me in. I think some of his human designs might be a little too stiff for my taste in some panels. Other than that I really love his realism art and it doesn't look like a Japanese comic at all in my opinion.

If you have money Skykid track down the psychical copies of Vol 1-10. There's something with Hoshino's artwork that looks ten times better looking up front on paper than looking it on a computer screen.

The stories in 2001 Nights are amazing. True there were very few stories that were pretty cliché at the beginning (the "Bird" story in the later volumes) but it was how the story was executed that made the difference.

After reading 2001 Nights I'm going to save up some cash and hunt down other English translated Hoshino's works. He did an adaption of James Hogan's The Two Faces Of Tomorrow that was translated into English.

I would if I could, but no recourse to that stuff at the moment. His character designs seem strongly influenced by US comic art of the 70's, giving them a really unique western/Japanese feel. Very solid stuff.

Finished 2001 Nights. One of the most joyous sci-fi comic book experiences ever, up there with some of my favourite 2000AD Alan Moore shorts, and Bradbury literature. What a pleasure. Did this guy do any more sci-fi in the short story vein, cos this was inspired.

I'm looking at Vinland Saga at the moment - prob is it's a bit long and currently ongoing. I sorta like to get an ending where possible.

Speaking of Osamu Tezuka, my older brother, younger sister, and I watched Metropolis this night.

Though the script was a little clunky like everything anime ever (HUMAN BEINGS ARE CONTROLLED BY OUR PASSIONS AND EMOTIONS AND ARE INFERIOR Blah blah blah), but it was a superbly-designed and animated film, and one of the few times where the CGI didn't look out of place or cheap.

It was really something, and surprisingly dark for looks like on the cover to be a kid's movie. Great fun.
