Sega Saturn PSU Blown

Post by Trevor spencer »

Hi

Ive been a fool :( , I wasnt thinking straight and plugged a UK power cable into my Jap staurn , There was a big pop and lots of smoke , Ive got the PSU out and i think its the big capacitor on the board that has blow , Do you think i could get away with just soldering a new one on ? also how do i find a proper replacement ? what info is needed from the old cap ?

Or could i replace the PSU with a UK one from a cheap 2nd hand unit ?

Please help i want to play radiant silvergun :(

Thanks

The glass fuse looks intact but the big cap has gone i think as it exploded lots of nasty juice on the inside of my saturn

I have a 4 pin model but i was looking at these 240v 5 pin models

http://gamedoctorhk.com/index.php?main_ ... cts_id=982

I wonder if they would work , also i have a Modchip in mine that i needed to solder to the 3rd pin of my PSU so would be a little confused how to solder it to a 5 pin model :(

Heres mine , you can see a slight burn mark where i had to solder the modchip wire

dont panic too much i know this is fixable as ive seen Luke Morse on Youtube fix a faulty PSU in one of his Saturns. He hand tested components on the PSU and replaced whatever was defective and tested it again , it powered on fine. From memory he replaced 2 components and all was good from there

A good way to tell if a Capacitor is gone it will leak fluid or bulge at the sides and top

I recommend learning how to test components for defects and then go to work on your PSU

im no Pro but to me you've got it right , found the broken part specs and found a suitable replacement. If im correct your from UK wouldnt Maplin be easier to get components from ?

Ok got my old one off , I noticed the cap should only be soldered on one way , On the original i have a white strip down the side of the cap indicating what way round it goes , if i get the new one and it hasnt got sny markings how do i tell what way to solder it

Many Thanks :)

I have a White Saturn I bought years ago that has never worked properly, and looking at the PSU the exact same capacitor seems to be blown (I suspect that the Australian I bought it from plugged it into their 230V supply and fried it). The machine actually still powers up but, presumably owing to the dead capacitor not smoothing the voltage supply out, fails to stabilise the picture - you can actually see the Saturn BIOS clock screen just fine but the picture flickers and sputters on my CRT (and fails altogether on the XRGB).

Unfortunately I don't have a spare machine with a same-spec cap on it as you do... So I've ordered myself one and we'll just have to see if putting a new cap on it brings it back to stable life. :)
