favorite anime series

I liked Dai-Guard quite a bit. It's an anime about office workers who pilot giant mechs to protect the city, when they aren't going through paperwork and red tape. It's pretty clean for the most part, about a PG.

Another series I liked quite a bit was Princess Nine. It's about an all female highschool baseball team that goes up against the guys. The dub for this one is actually better than the subtitles and definatly worth checking out. It's a drama with little bits of humor. It's mostly PG with minor fanservice in one episode and one brief nude scene where only the back in shown. PG-13 to be safe.

Vote++ for Last Exile--very steampunk, gorgeous animation. PG-13ish, particularly later on, due to violence

Nominations for
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure--a bit goofy in some episodes, but an interesting take on having super powers. R, mostly for violence, though there's some [violently] unsexy nekkid boobies in spots

Full Metal Alchemist--somewhat like JoJo, but centering on magic [alchemy]. I guess PG-13, but I can't remember... I prefer the manga.

Dragon Quest--The original Dragonball

[kidding] based quite loosely on the game of the same name... if you can find DVDs of it, LET ME KNOW

PG, there is violence but in the fantasy sense. [Note: This is the one with Akira Toriyama character designs, since there are apparently 259252750 shows called DQ, which only adds to its impossibility to find.]

Keroro Gunso or Sgt. Frog--This is one my brother made me watch/read... it's kind of like Weird Anime Excel Saga in that it makes fun of other anime/manga. I think it's G all around, except some nosebleeds and "Looney Tunes" violence.

Princess Nine--forming a girl's baseball team! Proof that a good script can make ANYTHING interesting!

G... I can't really remember anything too objectionable.

...I hesitate to recommend Hikaru no Go, just because it's weird saying, "It's about people playing Go, and it's REALLY GOOD!!!"

but it IS good, for a pretty much realistic show. [Totally G]

...and that's all that comes to mind at the moment...

Irresponsible Captain Tylor (very funny)
(something) Nadesico (slightly risque in places, but harmless - can't give you the full title as someone borrowed my DVDs and never returned them).

I remember seeing an episode of Evangelion in Spanish when I was 5, and I thought it was a Phantasy Star II cartoon. (Rei looks a lot like Nei. That's just me.)

But either way...
Case Closed. Slayers. I guess FMA is okay. That's about it.

I don't like FLCL or Paranoia Agent. Any show where I have to watch twelve times to get it is just something I can't relate to.

I hate. Despise. Azumanga Daioh. It's not funny.
Oh yeah, anything by Ken Akamatsu sucks too, because of the incredible amount of fanservice. Damn, I HATE fanservice.

On another note, I want to see JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (WRYYYYY!), Berserk (a guy who pretty much hates Japan that I know likes this, what does THAT tell you?), and, hm. Uh. I guess the Fire Emblem OVA would be nice.

Martian Successor Nadesico thats what I meant but for some reason I was thinking BattleStar for some odd reason.

I loved that Guy with the Gekiganger lol wasn't Gekiganger an actual anime btw?

It was a shower scene in one episode and only the back was shown.

Gekiganger was an OVA spinoff of Nadesico, but I don't think it was an actual anime before Nadesico. I heard that the manga version of Nadesico has a parody of Harlock instead of Gekiganger.

I find it funny that you called him "that Guy with the Gekiganger" since the name of that character actually is Gai (I hope I spelled it right). He's hilarious.

It's been a year since I watched it so I forgot his name heh.. I loved his attack names

Blasphemy... Azumanga is brilliant. Words can't describe the elegance of the subtlety in this anime... *subtle* being the keyword. A must-watch IMO.

Berserk is also in a class of its own, a must-see. Despite being a gorefest, the imaginative and convoluted plot is mind-blowing, and I swear there are some highly spiritual moments watching this... the music contributes immensely to this, as does the dialogue. It's just, yeah.... so damn cool.

As for the wackiest.... Jungle wa itsumo Hale nochi Guu. Watch it and see.

I don't watch anime anymore (my friend went off it, and he sourced all my viewings), but I think those were my fondest memories overall. I am actually a japanese drama freak now :P http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/torrents.php

The Vision of Escaflowne series is quite possibly the greatest anime of all time (though I wouldn't really recommend the Fox chopped up version).

It's got an incredible, thougtful, well paced storyline, highly memorable and dynamic characters, epic and dramatic battle scenes both with and without mecha, a score by Yoko Kanno, and possibly the greatest gathering of voice talent ever - including Maaya Sakamoto, Tomokazu Seki and Jyoji Nakata to name a few. Also, there are no "filler" episodes (take that, Evangelion!!!)

What with much of the plot dealing with war, there is a fair bit of violence and some blood. It is pretty tastefully done, though.

As far as nudity goes, there really isn't any to speak of. There's a scene late in the series where you see the backside of a doppelganger briefly.

Just remember to get the TV series instead of the movie. While I don't think the movie was BAD, it certainly is nowhere near the quality of the series.

Everyone else on here seems to recommend Evangelion, and I'd like to offer my vote against it. I thought the only thing Eva really had was some nice character designs and an interesting concept. I felt that it was quite flawed, though. There were a few thought provoking moments, but many of the so called "deep" segments were about as contradictory and shallow as your average politician.

In addition, this 26 episode series has not one, but fully TWO episodes containing nothing but a recap of the preview few episodes. As someone who bought the subtitled VHS tapes many years ago (with only two episodes per tape, mind you), this was quite aggravating.

I also found Eva to be rather immature in other ways... lots of sexual humor which, while at times funny, gets old pretty quick when you're watching what is supposed to be the greatest anime of all time. It certainly didn't live up to my expectations.

The characters never changed, never progressed. Shinji was still the same worthless piece of crap at the end of the show that he was at the beginning. With no character development, there was no reason for me to care about the characters.

I kept watching all the way to the end, hoping that it would get better. And, as far as I'm concerned, it didn't.

So get Escaflowne instead. It's far better in every respect. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Judging by every other post in the thread, I'm in the minority on this one though.

Exactly. The series really doesn't have anything to say that hasn't been said by a million other anime series, TV shows, movies, etc. It just says it in a very oblique way that makes it appear deeper than it is. "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit."

I've only seen the first episode of Evangelion so far-- watched it late last night-- and it wasn't too puzzling/deep/baffling: just a kid deciding whether to get into a giant mech to face "the angels" or whatever they were called. Perhaps the series gets more complex as it goes along.

It's a monster-of-the-week show for a while, but it slowly morphs into something much more pretentious. And there's nothing I can say about the final two episodes that hasn't already been said a thousand times.

Ghost In The shell: Stand Alone Complex (The TV series) is my all time favourite, and I even prefer it to both movies. More of an adult series though.

If you have children, you have to get into ghibli stuff though. In particular, My Neighbour Totoro is great for very young children. Kiki's Delivery service is possibly my all time favourite cartoon though

Nausicaa.net is a fantastic resource for Ghibli stuff.
