Hori Real Arcade Pro EX Fighting Stick?

Post by finisherr »

Would have posted this elsewhere but didn't see a thread...

Does the Hori Real Arcade Pro EX Fighting Stick Xbox 360 come with a Sanwa stick? I thought I read that somewhere but can't seem to find where I read it. Also, has anyone had any luck modding this with a seimitsu LS-32? It's this is a pic of what I'm getting:

Anyway, just glad to have some sort of stick to work with to start. Yesss. Coming in the mail soon.

I believe it's a Sanwa stick with Hori buttons.

Should be no problem to mount an LS-32, but depends on how it's drilled inside. You might be able to use the original mounting plate or you might have to mix-n-match with the original joystick.

Also the wiring harness I believe is different, but I think if you rotate the joystick 90 degrees and flip the connector it works somehow. Not sure if the JLF in the HRAP EX has the TP-MA PCB mounted switches or not though ... I believe it does, Hori loves to use harnesses instead of quick connectors

You can mount an LS-32 in a standard HRAP EX no problem. You're just gonna have to get QDs or solder the wires to the joystick microswitches. You'd also want to get a standard LS-32, not the LS-31-01 ( the one with a PCB and 5-pin connector.

It is no problem mounting the LS32 with the 5 pin connector in the stick: just flip the connector 180 degree. As mentioned, you might change the mounting plates though.

Try google, there are a few guides how to do it.

I have one of these, the JLF in mine was not the pcb mounted switch type.

Given that the Sanwa stick is a quality stick you may want to give it a good try before you commit to installing a Seimitsu LS-32 - in many cases the choice between a Sanwa and Seimitsu stick is a matter of personal taste. I couldn't stand the buttons though - so I replaced those with Seimitsu PS-14-GN and Seimitsu PS-14-DN push buttons. As those are screw-in push buttons I needed to grind away (with a dremel) some metal from the stick's base plate to get one of them to fit. Using Seimitsu PS-15 (i.e. snap-ins) probably would have avoided that. After that you should have a great stick for Xbox 360/PC.

Still wanting an LS-32 based stick though I converted a Mayflash fighting stick (which I was more willing to sacrifice) with a Seimitsu LS-32-01 and PS-15 snap-in push buttons. That stick works for PC/PS1/PS2/PS3 and on GameCube(Wii)/Dreamcast/Saturn with various PS2 based-converters.

The Hori stick for multi-system use is the Hori Real Arcade Pro SE (PS2) - it uses all Seimitsu parts and there are a number of good adapters for the PS2 controller interface but HRAP SEs tend to be hard to find these days.

Yeah, I'm not really committing to the LS-32 just yet. I was just curious because a lot of shooting fans seem to prefer it. If the buttons are awful I might take your suggestion on the PS-15s.

Excited to be getting a stick though. That's for sure.

I play fighters about as much as I play shmups, and I have to say that I tend to prefer the Sanwa sticks. I can play both games pretty well with the JLF, but I can't play fighters for **** with an LS-32. If you have to have just one stick, I'd say Sawna JLF. But if you're a lunatic enough to collect sticks like me, it isn't a bad idea to have at least one of each.

I find that seimitsu sticks feel very cheap. If you play often, their gates wear down, and the overall build quality doesnt seem nearly as solid as the sanwa stuff. I would rather mod a JLF to shorten the throw.

Got this stick in the mail. Playing so sloppy now. It's fun though. Maybe I'll adjust.

Also, latest Tattiebogle mac driver isn't working. Bummer.

I have been playing cave shmups with the same stick without any mods for 4 years, it serves me well. Give it a try before switch it to seimitsu.

Any mac users in here by any chance? It would be sweet to be able to play mame with this. Otherwise, I can always play my 360 shmups.

So glad I got this stick. Super fun. I'm just going to rock bootcamp and install windows on my Mac. I heard somewhere that it works just fine on PC with the standard drivers. So pumped.

Yup, 360 controllers work great on the PC.

Only problem is the stick always gets recognized as a POV hat, so game usually need the controls remapped.

Not a problem in emulators, but in native PC games that don't have any remapping options or just don't recognize the POV hat for some reason, you'll need to use something like Joy2Key or XPadder.

I prefer to use my stick with an MC Cthulhu in it for PC stuff for this reason. It sends stick input as both joystick and POV hat inputs. A very handy feature indeed ^_~

Working great with bootcamp. I'm gonna try and find that scanline .ini config thread to make my games look sweet. This rules.

Also, noticing that the buttons stick a little. I don't really mind the joystick, but I might want to swap the buttons. Are there any buttons that are pretty easy to swap on this stick?

Yup, I've always found the buttons in Hori sticks far less acceptable than their joysticks.

However, the buttons are generally more difficult to replace, as Hori likes to solder them directly to a large PCB underneath, which makes both removing the old buttons and adding new ones fairly challenging.

Crack open the stick and snap a few pictures -- I hope I'm wrong

My HRAP EX had quick connects (like this). The only issue is that there isn't enough space for a screw-in push button in the "A" location. So you either have to use snap-ins or "make room" by grinding away at the bracket with a rotary tool (dremel).

Getting a stick was the best thing I could have done for my shooting experience. It takes an hour or so of play to get used to it, but when you do, it's amazing.
