Loads of folk didn't know/care it was illegal. Also, your average person just saw "ooh look, Mario! And it looks like a N64 controller!" [hell, I didn't know at the time, and I probably wouldn't have cared], you almost always saw one of the things demoed on the mall floor. Used to see at least 2 stands in a mall back in the day selling the things. I think it cost $30 when I got it, but apparently some vendors sold them for much more.
It eventually got around that yes, this was quite illegal to sell [IIRC, the NES patents were expired, but there are still over 70 pirated games on the system], so they disappeared from such public venues.
Read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Pla ... er_Joy_III

I kind of wish I still had mine [battery thing broke? I can't remember...], even though emulation is easier and I can use better controllers. :P
When the AC adapter shorted out, we turned to the battery pack [which somehow worked, it's notorious for being unusable], and when the batteries ran low, video ram would get screwy [occasional random tiles, frequent random palettes] if the battery was really low. :P Made playing Contra on the thing surreal, haha. I remember being in Trinidad visiting some family at the time when the adapter shorted out, and eventually the batteries ran low. My cousins and I were amazed at the odd effects low voltage did to the thing. :P

I think I left it down there, and it probably got tossed out since it was unusable without power. Ah, well.

Stuff like DaiOuJou I find is way harder to chain, and much easier to drop a chain. Guwange's punishing if you drop a chain, but it's much easier to maintain it throughout the course of a stage than tends to be in the *Pachi games.

True that!
That's exactly why it's so infuriating to lose a chain in Guwange, because it's easier and more flexible to maintain.

I don't care about losing the chain in DOJ since it's so damn strict.

Damn straight it is! I may pop that in after work today.

I ended up just suiciding in Twinbee last night because I had to go to bed. It's fun, but I feel like it should end after loop 2 and force you to maximize your score within those two loops.

I have a few questions though I really hope someone can answer. I'm playing on the 3DS version and my final score after running out of fucks to give was just shy of 9 million which is about 3 times higher than the #1 score registered in our own high score thread (http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=13830).

So I was under the impression that the 3DS version was exactly the same as the arcade version just 3D but are the scores not actually compatible? For reference at max chaining the gold bells were giving me 100,000 points each which was maintained as long as I didn't let any of them fall off the screen.

3DS Twinbee is based on the Famicom version, not the arcade.

I actually got to the final boss of DOJ WL's first loop with an extra life to spare, and at least one silly death I could've avoided. I might actually be able to 1-All this as long as I don't do something silly again like die with 5 bombs in stock against it...

Working on 1CCing Satazius on Normal. I got the strategies and techniques down, but the consistency needs to be there. Also hard is unlocked, another masochists dream! Otherwise, this game is starting to grow on me! 8)

I'm mostly playing Ibara which is rather frustrating yet incredibly addictive. Got to Lace a few times but I either need to learn how to score, or ignore medals altogether.

Also gave Garegga a couple attempts for the first time in a year or so. Totally out of practice, best run was about 6.5 mil with Gain ending the run at BlackHeart mk1.

I don't know whether to feel smart or dumb...

I was playing Recca, and I started thinking about how many of the aspects of that game reminded me of Yagawa. I knew about the Pink Sweets bomb, but then I started noticing more things: the medal chaining, the option formations, those annoying arm things from Garegga stage 1, etc. I started thinking "wow, this game was probably a huge influence on Yagawa."

YGW sure loves arms

I'm sure the code for the arms is fucking awesome, I'd really like to look at some of his source. Maybe commenting a disassembly of Recca is in order

Doujin shmup called Kaikan.

http://youtu.be/VbXddF5i8KM

(Download link in description.)

Very fast, plus a decent scoring system, which isn't shown off very well in the clip - basically, you kill stuff, stop firing to hoover up medals, raise the medal rank from G to A. Medals also charge your bomb-meter. Use bombs to get even bigger medals. If you drop a medal or get hit then the medals go back to G rank. Good selection of different ships too.

Incidentally, Jirurun of Siter Skain cited Battle Garegga's multi-part bosses as a direct influence on Kamui (ctrl+f "garegga"). And sure enough, its third boss proudly flexes the YGW spider-arms (and then tries to stab you with them). I love seeing little stylistic trademarks like that filter their way through the genre...

As long as freeware shmups this good keep getting released, I'm happy to be a PC-gamer.

Btw, I can't for the life of me figure out what those arrows on the sides mean? The item get bonus seems to be the same regardless of what direction you go for collecting, are they just meant as a convenience to tell you where the items are?

Nice work KAI. I have the opposite problem-- I can break 9 pretty regularly (in fact I almost feel like a B score is in reach), but I have yet to even make it into the beginning of stage 6 on one credit. Lace keeps ending my runs with her blue needles of death...

Who made that game? The point items you can collect look exactly the same as the medals you can uncover in the doujin Solid State Survivor! (Specifically, the large one at 0:34, it's possible both games ripped the sprite from elsewhere?)

Doesn't seem to be much info available on Kaikan. This seems to be the 'official' site...

http://www11.atpages.jp/zakichi/kaikan.html

...but it's a bit short on details.

I'm not too sure what the big arrows are - I assumed it was the direction that enemies were about to come from, but the game's moving so fast that there are usually enemies coming from everywhere and you're killing them faster than you can see most of them. So maybe it is pointing to the location of the large medals.

I think it's pretty great. I like some of the graphical effects too, like the screen-rotation during a couple of the bosses.

I believe the arrows on Kaikan are just there to tell you if there are medals offscreen, they just don't have much use because you can just vacuum the medals to you in most cases.
It's nice to know that the game is complete, though. However, aside from the ship select screen, I can't tell any differences from the first version I played (v0.6), as I can't really get past stage 3. The medal collection and the game in general got a little annoying for me today though, since I had just been playing Battle Garegga.

Speaking of which, I increased my Battle Garegga score to 1.73 million (increase of over 500k) today (I use Silver Sword C). After seeing the first Special Demonstration run by Kamui (with helpful commentary by Icarus), I realized that there were things I was capable of improving on, and that I needed to rethink how I played the game. So far, I only did a few things differently: attempt increasing autofire rate at the beginning (as I'm under the impression rank isn't making a huge difference when I can't get past the stage 3 boss), try to actively get a few more points from the stage 1 boss by controlling my options some, get to the flamingos with two full weapons and some change, and do a good job of collecting medals (10,000 point value at stage 3, though I lost it at the end of the tracks somehow).

I've been playing random Yagawa games and trying to figure out why I like Muchi Muchi Pork and Pink Sweets so much more than Battle Garegga. Gonna go with "chainsaws" and "BOMBAAHHH" as my answers for now.

Having said that, Battle Garegga superplays are tons of fun to watch, even though playing the game itself doesn't really do it for me.

a little of Super R-Type and R-Type III. I like the acid detail in stage 2

and R-Type Delta in Psx emulator
WOw what a beautifull Ost! Stage 2 Theme Full Recommended
I like the game, very good stage design and fun enemies attacks and bosses as always. But i think the ship moves are a disadvantage. I need to memorize many enemies appearances or patterns. Not an easy game even with that special weapon/bomb

Stage1

Stage 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKC2jehMq_8

I died in stage 3 with that big robot

Edit: I use Ps2 controller on my pc. Now i realize my Ps2 joypad is having problems in the D-pad :( so That could be the reason. :(
