Tried Omega Boost (Polyphony Digital, PS1)? In case you haven't (or have and hated it - it happens a lot), a couple of my posts on it. TLDR: Panzer Dragoon in a stripped-down score attack setting with controls that are awkward at first but worth mastering for a godlike sense of agility, omniscience and destructive power. Mech designs by Shoji Kawamori, player wields an assault rifle the size of a Greyhound bus and can body-tackle battleships in half. Itano Circuses and monster explosions all over the damn place.KAI wrote:3D mecha games, need recommendations.

The moderate learning curve on the controls and mechanics will make you flounder at first, obscuring the pace, but get the basic boost-scan-fire-boost rhythm down and it'll throw stuff at you as fast as you can handle. Learning to kill that stuff efficiently is a further consideration, requiring smart use of the rifle and super attack as well as the classic "Itano Circus" lockons.ST Dragon wrote:Omega Boost also felt boring
It's also got a ton of unlockable bonus missions to master, and looks and plays pretty spectacularly when you know what you're doing. One of the best and flashiest PS1 action games along with Silent Bomber.
BIL wrote:The way Omega Boost's levels are designed, you have to treat each enemy wave as a whole and annihilate it before the next arrives for consistent 100% shootdowns. If you let waves overlap, it's nearly impossible to catch fleeing enemies while dealing with attacking ones (this pairs perfectly with the other level rating, speedkilling). Stages 3 and 6 are particularly good examples, with their successive waves of fast, small targets (the former has a wave emerge directly below you, making it easy to miss entirely). At first memorising the waves is a bit of a chore, but once you're obliterating them one after the other between crushing minibosses you feel like a frickin' mecha god. A veritable PIXIE OMEGA ZEUS even, as the game's ranking screen puts it after a good run!null1024 wrote:Also, I have learned the wonders of braking, almost got 100% shotdown rates on the first 2 stages, but things got too messy for 3 and 4.
I always used to keep moving, which doesn't help your accuracy much. Keeps you from getting shot at, sure, but makes it hard to shoot at.
Make sure to use the Viper Boost special on Stage 6's battleship fleet at least once, and try killing the third boss with it too. Nothing like smashing the latter's wings off and watching it plummet to its doom.

I was under the impression that those Gundam side story games were pretty well received. Got the first one, haven't played it however.KAI wrote:Saturn Gundam games, what are the best?

Tried the Gungriffon-series?...and 3D mecha games, need recommendations.
Quite like the first one, and to my understanding is a bit similar to the earlier mentioned Gundam games as well.

Shortest games/modes with a conclusive end, yet requiring mid-to-high skill?

Re: Generic game recommendations: you ask, we suggest
Samidare (PC doujin shooter) might be worth a look. Albeit it's not short-short (~8-10 minutes) but it's still something you can fire up and put down quickly yet feel exerted. Main game is brief, tough, and bloody intense if you deliberately push its scoring system (kill enemies up close for medal hoovering / burn through shield for stronger shot+faster boss kills, at risk of being ass-naked during bullet hellstorms and blowing your endgame stock bonus). Bangin' techno OST. Also has an EX stage to grapple with.DJ Incompetent wrote:Shortest games/modes with a conclusive end, yet requiring mid-to-high skill?

Newcomer Friendly shmups for PS1, PS2, PS3, US Xbox 360, Saturn or Wii?
I played thru Espgaluda II last night for the first time, first few levels were reasonable but then the game got insane. (And great.)
Looking for something a little less crazy?
I played G Darius for PS1 a few months back and loved it, nice difficulty curve that still got quite challenging by the end.

I really enjoy Bulk Slash (Saturn) and Ghost in the Shell (PlayStation).KAI wrote:3D mecha games, need recommendations.
Both have very straightforward game mechanics, but also excellent pacing, really diverse stages and great presentation.

Re: Generic game recommendations: you ask, we suggest
Oh, damn! Completely forgot about Bulk Slash. Brilliant game, pure seek and destroy fun. Well, there's an escort level and one where you have to set bombs around a map, but the controls are so solid and easy to pick up it never loses that arcadey feel. The handling of ground fighter and aerial forms is totally seamless. It's a joy to run around wreaking havoc on the street before blasting off and and letting loose with homing missiles from way above.

Was also going to recommend Bulk Slash to KAI. RE: Monster Hunter PC games, google returns some MMO called "Hunter Blade." Maybe that.
I want a game where you can play as a cute witch! And maybe fly around on a broom! The killer: Not a shmup.
Also maybe games about mazes and labyrinths that aren't first person tile-based dungeon crawlers. Or literal maze flash games.
Also nobody asked for it yet, but I'm sure Neo Aquarium: King of Crustaceans will fit SOMEBODY'S request.

Re: Generic game recommendations: you ask, we suggest
There aren't many choices on the Sega Saturn for Gundam. For games that contain Gundam, Super Robot Wars F and F Final are excellent (with reasonable load times for battles unlike most of the other 32-bit SRW installments) but they're SRPGs. Giren's Ambition is deep strategy with some annoying micromanagement. The Z-Gundam duo (one tells the first half of the anime story, one tells the second half) has sidescroller and shooter sequences but the controls are shoddy and the hitboxes are huge; there are a lot of story sequences so it's more for big Gundam fans. The Blue Destiny is a great trilogy and one of the more smoother Gundam mech sim experiences; there's no reason to not play this game first since you're looking for 3D mecha games.KAI wrote:Saturn Gundam games, what are the best?

For 3D mecha games, I'm a big fan of Another Century's Episode 2 and 3. There's a huge difference between sim and arcade mechanics, and realistic and sci-fi visuals within the mech sim genre so you'll need to figure out which parts of the spectrum you can stand. For a sample of extremes:
Realistic visuals, sim mechanics: Steel Batallion
Realistic visuals, arcade mechanics: Gungriffon
Sci-fi visuals, sim mechanics: Armored Core 2
Sci-fi visuals, arcade mechanics: Macross PS2
Re: Generic game recommendations: you ask, we suggest
Fishing games, preferably something more simulation-based. Any suggestions?
Re: Generic game recommendations: you ask, we suggest
I wished to play Blue Destiny since I saw the blue Gundam as a selectable MS on Gundam Extreme VS Boost. I already played most of the games from the AC series (Silent Line is my favorite), also GITS, ACE and Macross.
I'll add the blue destiny trilogy, Bulk Slash, Metal Wolf Chaos and Tekki to my list. Thanks.
BTW, a friend recommended me Frame Gride, looks really good.

Re: Generic game recommendations: you ask, we suggest
Two types of games, I'd like recommendations for starters plus recommendations for more complex titles that I can play later. That way I won't play the best straight away and be unsatisfied that the rest don't match up.
#1 Dynasty Warriors type games for the 360/PC, (although if there is a standout for other systems I'd still like to know)
#1 Harvest Moon type games on the DS/PSP. I hear Rune Factory has dungeons which I'd probably prefer, but I still wouldn't mind trying out one of the more classic titles.

Re: Generic game recommendations: you ask, we suggest
I'm always looking for local multiplayer games, and I was curious if someone knew of turn-based games that allow for local MP with reasonably fast turns. Something like Wesnoth (in 1vs1 only) or Worms or the more abstract Frozen Synapse. No wargames, no Civ-esque game, and it has to be turn-based. Lots of board games allow for that, but I'm at a loss to find many games that follow that formula on a computer, though I'm sure I missing something good somewhere...

Self-quoting is awesome. Conquest fits the bill pretty well as an indie game, it's a bit like Risk with simultaneous turns. There doesn't seem to be many Wesnoth-like games for PC though in multiplayer... Elven Legacy is the only one I found that's fairly modern, and my friend says it's not particularly good in MP.Aliquantic wrote:I'm always looking for local multiplayer games, and I was curious if someone knew of turn-based games that allow for local MP with reasonably fast turns.
