While looking around for speaker replacements for my Astro City on Parts Express I came across these things:

Probably won't bother with it myself, but for curiosity's sake would it be possible to wire one of these up without having to put in an additional amp? Some info on the Astro's speakers and amp is conflicting, I've seen some posts saying the speakers are 4 ohm, found one saying 8, I think they're wired in parallel, and haven't seen anything about what the amp itself can handle.
Not that I really know anything about speakers, I've just been reading a bunch over the past day. As far as I can tell, too low a load and the amp could be damaged, while too high leads to weak sound? I'll probably end up with some 8 ohm speakers (just cause that's what most are), while most of those subs are 4 ohms, and I'm fine with mono sound.
Mini subwoofer without separate amp?
Re: Mini subwoofer without separate amp?
There is a rule about connecting 4ohms and 8ohms, but i always mix it up so better google it. But doing everything wrong, it's pretty hard to damage something at low volumes.
I would say the much bigger problem is to mount this bugger. Without any enclosure, a 3 inch woofer won't do any good. So you have to build some bass tube or similar. But then you either have to mount it into your cab and it will rattle like a mad man or mount it externally.
But in case of using an external one, i would just buy something like this:

Cut of the satelite speakers, and have a decent looking and good sounding package.
This is basically what i want to do for my cab.

Re: Mini subwoofer without separate amp?
Yeah that's the main reason I probably won't bother trying it (well that and it'll cost $40 to begin with)...unless I just hook it up to one of the speaker mounts and do one regular speaker and one sub, but I figure it might sound too biased to the side the regular speaker is on.matrigs wrote:I would say the much bigger problem is to mount this bugger.
