Best Touhou game?

What's the general consensus as to which Touhou game is the best?

My personal favourite is Mountain of Faith, followed closely by Undefined Fantastic Object.

I enjoy Subterranean Animism, Mountain of Faith and Double Spoiler the most.

The scoring mechanics in Undefined Fantastic Object are very cool as well, so it's fun to watch superplays of that game.

What's the general consensus as to which Touhou game is the best?

I'm more partial to the PC98 games because I love the music and graphical styles, and the bullet patterns are quite interesting considering they're his very early games, so my personal preference leans towards LLS and MS but I imagine most people will name something from the Windows era games.

I think I agree more with the general consensus; I've never been a big fan of UFO.

I enjoy the first "triolgy" (six seven and eight) a bit more than the second (ten eleven and twelve), but I think they are both good.

A Touhou game I really dislike is Ten Desires. The scoring mechanic is awful imho, and many of the patterns aren't fun to dodge.

Ten Desires was simply way too easy compared to previous iterations, but considering how difficult SA and UFO are, perhaps Zun wanted to give the fanbase a break.

I do like though that TD has re-implemented the Spell Practice option, which I feel ought to have been standard for the series back when Imperishable Night first introduced it.

Imperishable Night is my favourate, it's the one I spent the most time with. I stopped playing these after Moutin of Faith as I found that particular game to be a little disappointing.

UFO is by far my favorite. Challenging survival right from Normal, very fun and timing/execution intensive scoring mechanics. The characters have interesting shot/bomb types too. That's one of the main reasons why I like IN (Youmu) and SA (Marisa B) a lot too, besides of course having a lot of other additional qualities.

Imperishable Night is my favorite, UFO is also pretty rewarding. Love the risk/reward system and the music.

phantasmagoria of dim.dream. the game is so badass. fast paced, little resources and so much shit you have to keep in mind when you play. it's a great experience every time. the more badass you are, the higher you score. it's the most beautiful of systems.

Mountain of Faith for its simple but rewarding score system. It also has some of my favorite enemy patterns and music.

UFO hands down, as far as how fun it is to play, how great its mechanics are, difficulty, etc.
PCB has the most beautiful patterns and I like its scoring mechanics.
MoF has the best music and has the best single spell card.
SA is quite good overall and stage 4 might be the best single stage.

for me:

Phantasm Romance = Phantasmagoria Trues > Mystic Square = Lotus Land Story > PoFV = PoDD > GFW > DS > the rest of the TH shmups

reason being that (besides the first two -- which aren't official games -- being awesome games, with nice stages, patterns and systems), MS and LLS don't give me the feeling that I'm missing too many points whenever I'm not grazing as hard as I should (or chaining faith in MoF), like other games (that aren't SoEW) do. PoFV and PoDD have chaining on bullets, no grazing, and I can stop worrying about memorizing stage portions. GFW is there because freezing large areas of the screen is fun (fun which is score-fied), DS is there because even though it makes me rage and restart stages, it's not as painful as restarting whole runs (and never getting actually good on later stages because of bad memory for the first stages preventing me to start practicing the later stages).

In terms of presentation and/or music, my list would be

Phantasmagoria Trues = Phantasm Romance > MoF = IN = PCB = GFW > UFO = DS > Mystic Square = Lotus Land Story > PoDD

Incidentally, the infamous "ZUNpet" has actually been identified.

It's the roland sd-90 Romantic Tumpet patch, with vibrato added.

I recently grabbed all the PC ones, and i'm partial to Perfect CHerry Blossom. i also think fairy wars is pretty interesting. once i get a decent pad for PC that will map the dpa to analog instead of PV hat i wil probably have a lo more fun with all of them. They look pretty nice on a big screen.

I actually am going to go with GFW. It's very fun; it's basically a cross between Touhou and Takumi games. Definitely worth a playthrough, even (especially?) if you're not into Touhou. (Though be warned - there is a lot of milking involved if you're playing for score)
