[Saturn] Assault Suit Leynos 2 (getting the best rank)

I don't really consider this a shmup so I was unsure which section to post in. Mods, if this is not the proper section, feel free to move it and I apologize in advance.

I created a thread on racketboy so I'm using the handy copy/paste...

Ok, I beat it again. This is my 3rd or 4th time. I unlocked all but two of the suits. Oddly, I didn't unlock the 3rd suit this time around which is a variant on the Leynos models with nearly all stats maxed out. The other suit that remains locked is the last one. I have yet to unlock it on any of my play-throughs.

I unlocked nearly all of the weapons and items this time. Just over half of the armor was unlocked (you get some pretty powerful armor if you keep your rank up).

So with that I'll segue into this: How the hell does the ranking system work? Just when I think I have it all figured out I get hit with some mysterious penalty at the end of a stage. I know damage taken plays a role - though not as big a role as I initially thought.

Ranking appears to be affected by a few things:

-damage taken
-enemies killed
-amount of damage done to bosses (did you outright kill it or did you take it apart piece by piece)
-time
-ammunition used (maybe a penalty)
-type of weapon used (maybe a penalty)

Does anyone have any insight into this? The lack of online faqs or guides on this game really means you have to go it alone.

If anyone speaks Japanese and feels like translating, I can send scans/pics of the instruction booklet.

Thanks for the link! I can regularly get Bs and Cs so I guess I'm just going to have to aim truer.

edit: And it doesn't appear that rank is everything. Points also play a part in equipment unlocking. I have gotten lower ranks with a higher score and unlocked different equipment because of it.

1 C, 3 Bs and 3 As. Now that I'm in the 2nd loop (with those scores) the difficulty is through the roof. They throw everything and the kitchen sink at you. Even with the most powerful suit it took a few mins to put the stage 1 boss down.

I unlocked about 95% of the weapons and devices. All armor and suits are unlocked.

My final score was over 360,000.

And yeah, getting a good score and unlocking equipment basically boils down to "kill everything, kill it fast, don't get hit, pick apart the bosses".

Does anyone know of a site with a detailed information on this game? I searched both the English and Japanese internets high and low, but to no avail. I`m primarily interested in the info regarding the effects some devices have on gameplay. I`m pretty sure I used to know this stuff before, but when I decided to replay this game yesterday I found out that I didn`t anymore. Like, what does the alfa-system device actually do? I got it for A-ranking the last boss. It`s a hidden reward item, so I guess its effects on gameplay should be somewhat substantial, but I haven`t noticed anything so far.

Not if you got the L-90000X beam of death on the first loop. 2nd loop first stage boss will go down in a few seconds.
