That would be a huge list of games to hate on.

About the only thing I would change is the swirling strobe-light bullets that cause me physical eye strain to track. I'm not a fan of several-minute boss milking, but that's easy enough to ignore. So yea, I'd totally support a new release of it.

CAVE should be grateful to all the guys who dump and emulate the games and make them available to us for free. It's basically the whole reason a western shmup community even exists.

While I personally don't agree with trap15's motivations, I'm not sure how internet sources "disprove" someone's moral objections. He can do what he wants.

I had bought the PS2 port a while ago when I was getting back into cave shmups, didn't care for it much but my skills weren't what they are now. I've decided to give in another change, in the form of a PCB no less.

I gave it a quick whirl last night, not really certain how to approach the game yet. This one will take some time to get the hang of for sure. All the on screen action actually makes Garegga seem easy to read in comparison.

I should have quoted the earlier part

I'm not withholding it because there's nowhere to send it. I'm withholding it because I still think there's a chance for a new better port of it. Also because CAVE would hate me even more for doing it
It still doesn't prove or disrpove anything, I just wanted to point out that emulation helps the community and helps CAVE too even if they like to get mad at it, so I don't really see what's morally wrong with it.

But yeah he can do whetever he wants I don't even care my pc wouldn't run it anyway

It's morally debatable at the very least since it takes control out of the creators hands... you may disapprove of their business choices, they may even be fundamentally flawed, but that is their right as the creator/owner of the material.

For example, if they can't be bothered to do it themselves I would proposition cave should offer trap a deal and put these out on steam or something. Whilst I think that's highly unlikely, I would not propose that trap should simply just release his efforts without cave's approval since it might limit their options on something in the future.

It's a frustrating situation as a fan, but I think you need to keep cave's wishes in mind when dealing with an entertainment property...

Yeah, of course you are right when you say that. It's a just crappy situation all over heh.

Just watched Archer's replay, not liking the boss milking and all those safe spots.

This is 100% true, at least for me. I would've never played a CAVE game, and would've never bought a CAVE game, and would've never bought a japanese xbox 360 to play more CAVE games, if there was no CAVE emulation.
Who knows, I might even buy ibara some day, after falling in love with it thanks to trap's build. whoops, I mean a build he refuses to release

i had a bit of a breakthrough today. i was fighting the second boss and realized i had two lives and an extend fast approaching, and i thought to myself "wtf is wrong with you? kill yourself!". so i suicided twice, triggered the final form, popped a hadou in his ass, hit the extend and off to level 3 i went. and it was beautiful. suiciding merrily as i went along, stages 3 and 4 were a breeze compared to their usual insanity. i usually game over on the end section of stage 4, but this time i was cutting down those giant airships with relative ease.

my credit ended somewhere in the middle of stage 5, but i've finally figured out what this "yagawa" business is all about. you have to approach this game with a totally different mindset from other shmups, and it's hard to do as it really makes no sense compared to basically every other game in the genre. the moment you think " if i had a few extra lives in stock to plow through stage X i'd surely clear it" is the moment your run ends.
I really need to learn how to play this game properly - I have the PCB, but I just get demolished every time I play.

Shit, I don't even know the difference between bombing and hadous :?

I did try playing this on ps2 and learning stage1 (getting a extend and boss milking too).
But its really hard on the eyes. Apart from that, it really mixes up the old school aesthetics with modern gameplay.
It one those games i really like to devote more time to.

It always cracks up my roommate when i play it, coz of all the Bom-bah shouting, and the sexy boss-screens.
And i agree with trap15, if a new port is a possibility, he should hold the release.

edit: also does anyone know where i can find ibara kuro select screen theme?

I much prefer the arrange ps2 version and wish it had the same level 1 music as the arcade version.

Honestly, most of it is harder to do than it looks and really only comes into play when you've mastered a good bit of the game anyway. getting the tricks down and not dropping the chain seems to net more than enough points to get a letter score.

edit: for clarity, the difficulty isn't necessarily in the execution of the milking, but more insofar as doing well enough that you can cash in all your extra resources for points. if you need hadous to help deal with the later bosses like i do, wasting them for a few extra points isn't feasible.

The 2nd Boss milking isn't hard, it's stupid, reached 8,5mil after doing it. I just need to practice the 3rd boss milking to get a letter score.

Archer got 7.6m at the end of stage 2. What's your secret?

Said he got to 8.5 after doing it, not that he had the 8.5 at the end of stage 2, bro.

But yes, jugs and jugs of boss milk are why I do not like this game. Far too much of your score comes from it, so much so that it feels like your stage performance hardly even matters.

Why are people milking Midi's final phase, anyway? Sure, it's an easy source of points, but if the rest of your run is substandard, then there's really not much point in spending five minutes for peanuts.
You get far more for accurate scoring from Kasumi and Teresa. A lot more.

What's the best place to read about the basics and some beginner strategy on this game (PCB) ? I found a lot of threads on Ibara, but nothing consolidated and for beginners...unless I'm missing it. :?

Muchi Muchi Spork wrote:These are (I think) the biggest tips for a first clear on Ibara.

-Suicide 1 man at the beginning of stage 1.

-Suicide all spare players on the stage 2 boss to go into stage 3 with no spares.

-From there, make sure you never get 2 spare lives in stock again, even for 1 second, unless you are in the end of the final stage. The reason is because suiciding down to 0 lives in stock lowers your rank way more than suiciding to 1 or 2 in stock. So play with 1 spare in stock and whenever you are about to get an extend, suicide to no spares before it pops up. If you die a man otherwise treat it as your suicide and then work back to having 1 spare.

As a recent PCB owner I can say right off the bat that the slowdown in stage 3 (trains) really makes it manageable, unlike the PS2 port which creamed me there every single time.

I'm enjoying this. Got to stage 5 boss for the first time on my last run and broke 4 million points - yay I suck.

If you are are a beginner and/or playing for survival, absolutely don't do this. Your rank starts bottomed out, you gain nothing rank wise by killing yourself right at the start.

It drops your rank like a stone if you do it correctly. But yeah, you can start milking that for points later since it's only worth upwards of what, 2m some points? Save your sanity and all that. You should at least learn the trick whenever you can though, since it lets you skip the last form of the boss which can be tough.

Edited to clarify some points.

Are you positive that rank doesn't increase quicker depending on how many men you have in stock? I thought that was the point of getting rid of one at the very beginning but I haven't done measurements with the cheat display myself. It won't make much difference anyway though because by the time you get your first extend you need to have no spares at all.

The point of suiciding at the very start is to get a Hadougun right away so you can jack up your medal chain super fast. You don't gain rank faster with more lives in stock, you just lose dramatically more rank when you die with less.

Your stage plan will depend a lot on how good at scoring you are. If you're just starting and and can't even get 1m before the first boss, then it's a bad idea to suicide right at the start, wait and do it on the boss. And once you get good at scoring, you don't want to drop down to your last life until the boss fight (right before you hit 2m), because there's no time for a second suicide before then, so you'll jump back up to 2 extends in stock during the stage.
