favorite anime series
I end up watching a fair bit of anime with my 6-year-old. We started with Pokemon some years ago, but are now kind of tired of that. Right now we're enjoying Zatch Bell and Naruto. Any suggestions? What are your favorites? (Please specify if it is strictly for adults.)
The Parent's Guide to Anime is a good resource for finding what things are appropriate for specific age groups. The site might be a little out of date, though - I haven't spent much time looking around there lately. But it should give you an idea of what to expect. Also, most anime sold (in the States anyway) has age recommendation stickers on it with warning labels of any sort of optential objectionable content.
Personally I tend towards the crazygonuts titles:
Ranma 1/2 (nudity, I'd say mid-teens)
Love Hina (nudity, again mid-teens)
Slayers (boob jokes but no nudity, exaggerated RPG stereotypes, I'd say early-teen. Slayers has many incarnations: Slayers Next, Slayers Try, Slayers Gorgeous, etc.)
Fruits Basket (pretty clean, I'd say early teens because of deep/more involved concepts/storyline)
Trigun (teen, lots of exaggerated gunplay, not really violent)
Less crazygonuts:
Record of Lodoss War (teen, swordplay, some blood and violence)
Record of Lodoss War: Legend of the Heroic Knight (same as above)
Princess 9 (early highschool-type drama)
ANYTHING by Miyazaki Hayao/Studio Ghibli:
Princess Mononoke (teen, blood and deep/more involved concepts/storyline)
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind (any age, clean)
Porco Rosso (any age, clean)
Spirited Away (early teen, deep concepts, some frightening imagery)
My Neighbor Totoro (any age, great for little kids)
Anyhow, those are my picks. I admit my list is very limited, and I don't really buy that much/watch that much anymore. But feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions about a particular show.

I prefer the more adult stuff, since it's for me. I don't mean adult as in demons, blood, and tentacle rape either. I like the story to be slightly deeper, the situations more involved.
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost In The Shell (films+series)
Gasaraki
Samurai Champloo
Hellsing
Gungrave

I'm a sucker for the (adult-orientated) Neon Genesis Evangelion. I know it's a common choice, but it made me think far more than any other anime ever.
I also really loved (again, not really for kids) the excellent Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, apart from the awful English VO.

I tend to like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Paranoia Agent, both of which would probably warp a 6 year old's mind beyond belief. If your kid can deal with one rather adult moment (hero goes nuts for a moment, rips off the lady he's living with's shirt off), I'd suggest the Wings of Honneamise as it's been one my favorites for years.

Six eh ? I think you might try something like Kenshin, even though it's sometimes a bit childish and very predictable, this thirty year old always has a great time watching it
Overall my tastes are very similar to those of Bloodflowers I think but think you should definately try out FLCL as well. It's the most "out there" thing I've seen...ever.

I like Eva as well. And generally anything with mecha is a-okay in my book. Macross Plus, for example, is great. Just started watching Robotech for the first time in my life. Gasaraki is an exception, I really dislike that one. Aside from those, there's Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, some Miyazaki stuff, Initial D...sadly I haven't had time for anime lately, but I do have loads of manga to keep me busy at times.

I'm not too big on anime but I've watched and enjoyed-
Ninja Scroll
Evangelion
Fist of the north star(watched up untill Rei and Ken try to save Rei's sister, the sci-fi channel repeated the show from the beginning)
Battleship something- I missed the last episode again because of the channel.

I was a huge anime fan back in college. I even fansubtitled the whole Maison Ikkoku set off of LaserDisc! The only things that interest me now are Ghost in the Shell, some Gundam stuff even though I've not watched much, and maybe some odd moments here and there. I loaded up "Aim for the Top!" the other day just for nostalgia alone. Very good.
Oh, yeah --- Giant Robo I think was amazing.

Here are a few I've enjoyed:
Monster - This is a great show that is very under rated
Elfen Lied (NOT for children!)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Yet another vote, but it is very interesting)
Cowboy Bebop
Full Metal Panic (All 3 seasons - although 1 and 2 are better than 3)
FLCL - this one is kind of crazy, but fun and short
I don't think any of these would be good for a 6 year old
.
For those of you that said Paranoia Agent, what did you like about it? I liked the first few episodes but ended up despising the show by the end.

seen samurai deeper kyo? i thought it was pretty good (tho gets a little tedious towards the end, could have been 4-5episodes shortened) and since we seem to have similar tastes you might too.

quite possibly the funniest, most surreal, most subtle anime/manga series I've ever enountered [6+] - Paranoia Agent
mindbendingly inventive [15+] - Mahoromatic
both seasons, a good watch, a bit of fanservice though [15+] - Samurai Champloo

some of my favorite recent series:
Air Master [27 eps.] - parody action show, much like the Power Instinct series is to fighting games.
fairly bloody/violent (but no deaths) and some sexual scenes.
story about a schoolgirl who wanders the streets looking for strong opponents to fight.
Bleach [50+eps. ongoing] - standard boys' action show with hint of Jpn. mythology, kinda wacky style.
lots of bloody violence, little sexual content.
story about a schoolboy who has the ability to see spirits in the real world. he meets a "Death God", inherits her powers and becomes one as well.
FLCL (Fooly Cooly) [6 eps.] - very wacky show. fast-paced comedy with lots of parody/satire and over-the-top action.
unrealistic violence and some sexual situations, also has serious underlying themes as well.
story about a young boy who meets a space-traveler that lives with his family. he receives some kind of inter-dimensional portal in his forehead from the traveler.
Samurai Champloo [26 eps.] - action show set in ancient Japan. by the same director as Cowboy BeBop.
very bloody sword-fights and occasional sex scenes.
story about two renegade swordsmen who meet a young girl and agree to help her locate someone, as they wander throughout Japan.
ps- Anime News Network has plenty of info you can look up.

I tend to watch all kinds of anime, and I can say that the Full Metal Panic series, especially Full Metal Panic Fumoffu should be a good choice for you. Watched it a long time ago when it was a fansub, and it was pretty good. I might also recommend FLCL, but people have mixed opinions on this series. I liked it, but a lot of people don't.professor ganson wrote:I end up watching a fair bit of anime with my 6-year-old. We started with Pokemon some years ago, but are now kind of tired of that. I second this choice - Monster is my favorite anime series, hands down. It's not all cute and cuddly, no random boobs flopping all over the place (not saything that is a bad thing, though), but it's extremely dark themed - It can sort of be catagorized as a psycological thriller/action, I suppose. I'm not a huge anime person, but this anime blows me away. Since it's very in-depth and story driven, it is probably best to stick to older audience though. And it's got some frightening imagery in several episodes. Good stuff. Makes you think, it does!TalkingOctopus wrote:Monster - This is a great show that is very under rated

1. Haibane-Renmei. a truly unique story of angel-girls living in a town where no one is allowed in or out. it's in a genre all its own, but definitely drama. starts out happy, but get ready for a plunge about halfway through... (PG)
2. Cowboy Bebop. no description needed. (PG-13)
3. Saikano. typical love story-- boy meets girl, girl asks boy out, boy and girl begin to fall in love... girl turns out to be the ultimate war weapon... all in the first episode... emotion-fucking war drama to the extreme. if you liked Eva or Grave of the Fireflies, you'll probably love Saikano. (PG-13)
4. Serial Experiments Lain. mindfuck cyberpunk classic. if you haven't seen lain yet, there's something wrong with you.... (PG-13)
5. Elfen Lied. cutest and goriest anime EVER, plus some truly memorable moments. (NOT FOR CHILDREN. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH.)

A timeless masterpiece, not just of Anime, but cinema in general. Must see!
Others I faves:
- Fushigi No Umi No Nadia
- Gunbuster
- Evangelion
Haven't really paid much attention to Anime in the last couple of years though, apart from the big Miyazaki films, Appleseed, etc. I saw Cowboy Bebop and FLCL, which were good. Anything else recent I should see?

Forum have given lots of good suggestions, including some of my favourate.
But most of them have not take into account that you are watching with a 6 years old. So I would consider give you suggestions according to what a 6 years old would enjoy.
Toei-Anim

There are some more Toei-Anim anime series would suit for young child. But I don't know their Japanese name and thus cannot found them on the web.

*Meow* I am as serious as a cat could possible be. *Meow*
Fruits Basket
Simply brilliant, though i'd set a 10+
Planetes
Excellent series! Down to earth, great characters. Interesting realistic sci-fi setting. Perhaps best suited for ages 8+
Whispers of the heart
Mellow and down to earth animated film by the masters at Ghibli
none of the above are violent or contain sexual content, but they do contain drama that might be hard for a 6 year old to take in.. don't miss out on them though.
Now for mature stuff:
Sexy Commando Gaiden
Pure genious! The Humor ranges from outrageous to sublime.. it's guaranteed to turn you inside out. It has had me almost pass out from laughter-exhaustion. Doesn't really contain nudity, as one might expect from the title.
Cat Soup
Surrealistic short film, very artistic and a feast for the senses. Inspiring stuff.
Mindgame
Might be the best animated film I've seen. Really pushing the anime-envelope. Artistic in a rare way. Masterpiece of animation and imagination. Also surrealistic in many ways, it's by the Cat Soup guy. However, even though it gets really far out it isn't lacking in character-depth or direction, and explores serious themes without loosing integrity.[/b]
