That's my weapon of choice too, the LS-32 makes for a great all purpose stick imo, even If I find myself resorting to pads to play some of the faster bullet hells.

Long-time lurker here. About two years ago I stumbled upon an article on shmups, came across Edward's 1CC blog and read a few things. At that point, I had grown rather dissatisfied with modern games who hold your hand the entire time and thus provide little challenge, and the shift towards multiplayer in the games industry is a turn-off for me as well.

I began playing some games first on emulators, but later on I bought an X360 (I live in Europe) and the European Cave releases. I recently ordered Mushi Futari and Galuda II. So far, I've only 1cc'd Death Smiles, which felt like quite an achievement. Compared to other Cave games, it may indeed be easier, but I still wouldn't call it an easy game. The last few weeks I've been working on Progear (MAME). I consistently reach stage 4 on one credit, and on a good day I can no-miss the stage four boss. I'm currently practicing stage 5.

Hi Everyone,

I just recently found this forum after getting into shmups. I've never really played or gotten into shmups before, but I am a gamer who loves a challenge. I usually search online for some difficult games and attempt to beat them (Like Ninja Gaiden 2 on Master Ninja). So in that search, I stumbled upon the last boss of Mushihimesama Futari on Ultra mode on youtube, which is labeled something like "Hardest Video Game Boss Ever" and I was instantly hooked.

So now I begin my own journey through shmups. It's like some sick fascination that's not healthy for you. These games are extremely hard, frustrating, and probably raises my blood pressure, but the personal satisfaction of obtaining a high score in a challenging game is all worth it for me.

Nice to meet you all!

Hiya! I'm Rikkusguardian.^^

I'm new to the shooter scene, but i always wanted to make a bullet hell game, even though i never really played any much. I was inspired a Game Maker named Giest118, who made a top down shooter of one my favorite Series, My Little Pony (The Lauren Faust version).

He inspired me to want to do a similar top down bullet hell game on Game Maker with an MLP theme, though this time i want to have a plot with it. That was one of the major turn offs to me about shooter games, that it was mostly about high scores, but it didn't have any purpose or reason to it since it had no story or character, and half the time i didn't understand what i was fighting. Was it aliens? A rival faction? Humanity fighting a god?

And of course, the scores itself in shooter games, or any other genre don't seem important to me, since it had no impact in the game beside bragging. Maybe it's just because i don't see the value of a high score yet. I will however, make scores be actually useful in my game, once i get around to it, but that's for later.

Hopefully I'll get to talk with you guys soon, I'll have lots of questions to ask, mostly in game maker and "how to do this/that and ect"! XP
Well, I learned my lesson from this site. But at least I now have inspiration from Cagar and Roo on making comedy relief sub-bosses...

good day to everyone.

I'm a German (living in Austria) player who's been concentrating on Touhou for the most part until now. After clearing the last 2 games (which would be SoEW and PoDD), I planned to clear some CAVE and Psikyo shooters. I'm not a particularly good player, but I try to make up for it with a lot of effort.

I'm not one for long introductions, so I will leave it at that.

So it's not just me that was obsessed with Gynoug's weird bosses as a kid? Good to know. That sprite is awesome by the way!

Hello everyone! Here is KAG.
My favourite STGs is "Pefect Cherry Blossom" and "Mushihimesama Futari Black Label". Actually these Game ist the most I haved played among all the STGs. What's more, I think Ikaruga is a wonderful work, but now I can't just challenge it.

There are two things interest me:
1.Where and How meet the german STGer? I really want to be part of them.
2.Is there any STG-Arcade in Germany(maybe in "Spielhalle(amusement)"? I have visted some Spielhalle in Darmstadt but unfortunately finding nothing STGs.

Hi everybody,

I'm in advance apologize if my English isn't really good it's not my native language and translator program doesn't spot every mistake :P

To make it quick, I intensively play video games since more than 20 years.

My 1st contact with shmups is a port of R-TYPE on Amstrad CPC 6128, but I was really bad at this game.
I also played a lot to P-47 on Amiga with a friend without succeed to clear the game.

When the 1st Playstation came out, my brother gave me his Super Nintendo with all his games ... Space MegaForce (the US version of Super Aleste) was in the lot.

I consider Super Aleste as my 1st real hardcore contact with STG : I 1CCed this game so many time that I started to give me some constraint to make the game harder like 1CC in normal difficulty by using only 1 weapon for the full run (made it with each weapon of the game : the 1CC with only 5-missiles was the hardest for me)

This kind of challenge gave me really good control of each formation with each weapon of the game I guest : thank to this I had not so many problem to clear harder difficulties (I cleared wild mode).

In the same time I played another STG : Super Swiv. I found so cool the jeep gameplay in this game.

After that I had a long period without STGs, I tried all kind of game, played a lot to RPGs and T-RPGs then to MMORPGs (I'm still a WoW player).

One day, a friend gave me the opportunity to play Shikigami no Shiro 2 on PS2 : It was my 1st contact with Danmaku ... I wasn't really good at this game, I was proud to 3 or 4CC the game after lot of training but now I understand that a 3CC run on this game isn't really good.
My friend also make me play to Dodonpachi and Mushihime Sama but I found these game way to hard for me so I stop to played STGs one more time.

2 years ago, I went to Stunfest for the 1st time. For those who wonder what is Stunfest, please check the Wasshoi in Europe topic :D

So I came on this event and played for the 1st time to Mushihime Sama Futari Black Label. I felt in love with this game.
It's also my 1st contact with the french STGs community : thank to them, I discover that there is a game center close to my home... this game center is now like my second home, I play nearly every day their (they have 8 STGs available : Deathsmiles, Mushihime Sama Futari BL, ESPgaluda 2, DDP, DDP DOJ white label, Sexy Parodius, Zero Gunner 2 ... and Darius Burst Another Chronicle !!)

I currently play a lot to Mushihime Sama Futari Black Label on Original mode (my current High score is 1099M on PCB -made this WE at Stunfest- and 1268M on XBOX360 -run downloadable on the leaderboard I guest as it's part of the 20 best Reco score of the leaderboard-)

I also love ESPGaluda 2 but never succeed to 1CC the game (my current best is a 224M run that finished on the path with all these noisy dolls at the end of the last stage).

i haven't played shmups in literally years but increased dissatisfaction with modern games has chased me back into my pinku bullet cozy den

i have a couple of highscores around here for progear and garegga (danbo daxter), took part in one or two STGTs. going to get the high-scores removed if possible because i was on drugs while doing those highscores. clearing my 1cc list. starting from scratch. living the clean healthy life from now on.

Well, lets do this.
I'm a absolute noob to the STG-genre but I think I'm getting addicted, currently testing some games for the PC which are avaiable for free. Thanks @rancor, his site has tons of games for free. Currently I'm playing Blue Wish Ressurrection Plus 1.11 and damn, that's some good stuff, these graphics, the soundtrack, the feeling when you get more and more score, that's four times better than sex, not that I ever had sex cause I'm a lonely nerd but hey, I guess that's how you must feel.

I'm 19 years old and I'm also getting into videogame-imports now, currently selling my ugly-PAL collection and bought a Japanese PS1 for much more money than a German(PAL-) one would cost but that doesn't matter because my new one is going to be cib and NTSC-JP. As soon as the PS1 is here I'm going to spend my somewhat hard earned money on more STGs, yes, how dare I could ignore this genre for such a long time.

Well, that's my story, see you in the forum because I'll never leave it, yep I think in 5 years or so my postcount will be >1000,
greetings

Hi to all,

my name is Mike McBike (well, not really...), I'm located in south west Germany (Baden Württemberg, near Stuttgart) an I am an electronics development engineer. I was born in 1967, so I had the pleasure to grow up with all the fine arcade shmups in real hardware. Feel free to ask me questions, whenever you want...

If you want to deal with the german language, youn can give me a visit on www.wolfgangrobel.de where you can find many arcade repair logs...

Nice to meet you all and best greetings from Germany,

Hi all. Sorry a tad late at the introduction. Born in UK in '76 and so grew up with Atari, Commodore, Specy, STE, A500, SNES to name a few. You want to know something else.. I went to a trade show with my Dad, years ago, I had some birthday money and went with the intention of getting a Neo-Geo AES after seeing those ads about pissing all over the SNES/MD etc. I was excited but guess what I did!!!? As I was an Amiga 'fanboy' (blinded you could say & had a A600 at the time) I saw the CD32, and for some UNKNOWN reason decided to buy that instead. WHAT A FOOKIN FOOL!! Sure the price tag considerably less but so was the grfx engine (LOL). To this day I still regret it, perhaps why I now have on order a precious AI CMVS Geo - so as you see, I can't wait to get my hands on this beast!! In fact I have been building my MVS carts and count 11 to date.

I dont have an arcade machine unfortunately but I have loved them since I was tall enough to reach. Some of my early fond arcade memories are Kung-Fu Master,Rush n Attack,Rygar,Quartet (the 4player big machine-NICE!). Great forum... Nice to meet you all!!

Hi!

I've discovered shmups with the Touhou series, a short while after Deathsmiles was released in France.
I immediately fell in love with Cave games :)

With the last Stunfest, I pulled myself to get my first 1CC on Mushi Futari BL. (original..)
It looked soo out of reach a few months ago but with a bit of practice on stage 3, not so much!

I hope to achieve better performances, compete on a few scores and have fun on this forum!

Hello everyone... I've posted a little on this forum already, but haven't introduced myself yet.

Well... I used to hate shmups (back in the past I didn't even know about the word's existence, calling them "little space-ship games" instead), because I'd mostly only play easy platform games, never having luck with any shmup at all, since they tend to have a quite hardcore difficulty for the most part.

But what made me like the genre was the Touhou games. When I got introduced, I firstly became astounded with the amount of bullets on the screen, thinking only crazy people would play them. But the cute girls called my attention, so, I decided to try them out.

On the very beginning I was a complete disaster, failing for the most part and never getting any 1cc's. But after enough practice I've become considerably better, now being able to even get hard 1ccs on some games of the series, as well as clearing the extra stages, which is something I could never even dream about back in the past. But I would never be able to do that all by myself... that's all thanks to a lot of different competent players' tips, strategy and support. Which made my skills improve quite a lot.

Thanks to touhou, now I have become quite addicted to shmups in general, especially the ones with a lot of cool special effects/lights and epic battles. They're really extremely fun to play.

I'm still nowhere as close as an elite shmuper, but I'm trying my best to get at least decent enough. I hope the people here will help me further with their professional strategies, and lastly, nice to meet you all.

Greetings everyone. My name is James Lee McKigney. I am basically an Autistic Gentleman who has graduated High School in New Waverly Texas and I am now looking for Work/Education. To get the e-mail out of the way: In order to use iCloud you have to buy a Apple Product like a iDevice or a Mac. Then you have to use said apple product to register for the iCloud email.

But enough about technicalities, I am here because I wanted to play Shmups and actually compete with other fighters in order to rank up. I'm not leaving any stone unturned when it comes to emulation of said games. I've downloaded various retro systems, I am currently grabbing the PC Engine CD's Library of games, and I am going to enjoy trying to defeat every every single shmup. (Even though I can't really do a NOKO run of my own. You know what I mean and If you don't, A "Knockout" is my lingo for a Life Loss.)

If I manage to defeat the highest difficulty without losing a life, I will still have my work cut out for me because those CAVE games will literally cause me to lose faster than I can breathe! Well, in order to win you must clear every challenge and every difficulty.

I promise to Abide by the rules and to be fair and treat everybody as if they were me. I vow to smash through the mayhem even if I die trying. So... Enjoy the show.

Hello everyone,

I've been playing Shmups on and off for the past 5 years or so. There's something frustrating and also stress-relieving in them that I have to keep coming back!
I was reminded instantly of the genre when I got my new phone and, while searching for something unrelated, I saw the Shmup my Dad used to have us play on the Amiga was ported there (Battle Squadron).
One thing lead to another and now I'm back to playing the harder Shmups again, but it really was a good reminder :).

I look forward to interacting with you all.

I just noticed this thread, so why not?

My name is Kevin (I say it very clearly in my main show which is also up on YouTube, so it is not a secret who I am and do not mind saying it).

I have been playing shmups for a really long time. I am a game collector and have been collecting for, I think, roughly 15 years or so (I am 30 now and started collecting around when I was 15).

I collect pretty much anything under the sun, but truly enjoy shmups. When the podcast I was on started expanding, we needed to think of more content when it came to videos. I really wanted to do videos on shmups, so I just started doing them. I started posting up in a few places so people would watch them and then, I knew about here just never made an account, I was told through a PM that I should post them up here as well because this is a good spot.

Honestly, It took me a month of making these before I did since I was really afraid you guys would reject me and my videos.

What I got was the exact opposite. You guys are very awesome and let me come right in as one of your own.

I mean, I have a big passion for shmups, but just happen to make videos about it. I probably should have been on this place much sooner, but it took somebody telling me to post my videos up here before I broke down and got an account.

I promise you guys will see me around these parts. I will never claim to be an absolute expert in every shmup, but I love them and have a passion for them, so I assume that is enough.

Let's see, as for my shmup collection, I have a ton of them. I have most of the common ones for Genesis. For 360, I have a bunch of the XBLA (I still need to get Triggerheart) and almost all of the US retail ones (I still need Raiden 4, but I am pretty sure I have all of the others). My pride and joy of my shmup collection is that I have a few arcade shmups (P-47 Phantom, ShienRyu, and Radiant Silvergun).

Yo, a big "Hi" to all of you!

I have finally managed to create my account after enjoying the shmups-forum for years :) Also, thanks to you guys for some excellent st guides!!!

My first introduction to the genre took place at my friends house, at his dad's glorious amiga.
Those amiga games will always hold some kind of fascination for me, guess it was because my parents never owned a computer back in the day.
Agony and Apidiya were my favourites and I think they still hold up today.

Anyway, it has been a long journey and my recent efforts in shmups went down into Raystorm on the ps.
What a great game, and damn what for an unforgiving game. Only three lives combined with the evil rank system. But yesterday the triumph came finally in reach and I took it!
Cool game and a worthy sequel.

I'd like to meet some fellow shmupers here and join the community, I think I've got the STG virus.

Hello guys, my name's Adam.

I don't have nearly as storied a history with shmups as many people here do, but I suppose I could say I've been playing them since I was a kid, having fond memories of playing them in arcades as a kid, though no game in particular sticks out.

I got first exposed to more modern shmups (and boy was I excited when I found out games like this were still being made) with the US release of Deathsmiles a few years back. It wasn't until last year that I stumbled across these forums and realized that there's an awesome community dedicated to these games. Only in the last couple of months have I started playing obsessively, and haven't really 1cc'd anything yet (unless you count novice mode in DDP Resurrection :p), but I'm getting there.

I love reading everyone's posts and hope to meet some fun people!

Hallo I used to post on Edge forum and The Bear and Badger for something like seven years.
I grew up on Slapfight, Tiger Heli and Tokio and hung out in a filthy arcade/snooker/pool hall with reprobates, rapists and thieves
and my first home system was a Toshiba HX10 MSX. The only games I can 1cc are Ghosts n'Goblins and Green Beret/Rush n'Attack.
Despite over 30 years of playing shooters - I suck at them, but the love remains.

edit: Touhou are pish.

hey guys new to forum.

but not to shmups its one if not greatest gaming, games as well put it.

im old school being that im 43 and been around gaming since i was around 8.

im not the usual one for forums joining or posting.

ok i have lots of emulators, its the easiest way of accessing shmups.i do have a lot of originals though which are mainly on the ps1/saturn/xbox360/ps3.

most if not all the ones i own are still sealed, never been opened.im still collecting which while not hard is expensive and i dont have alot of funds just to buy games.

i have`nt used mame for years now and decided to pretty much install it to a spare 500 gig hd.so today im asking if its allowed for a complete list of shmups available to mame,if someone is kind enough to endow me with a list.so i can pretty much set up mame for shmups only.

thanks guys keep on shmupping.
