Surviving the Shoot 'Em Up Apocalypse

Post by MOSQUITO FIGHTER »

What will you do if there are no more new shoot 'em ups being made? Will the old games be enough to keep you playing or will you still want some new shooting games? Will you turn to doujin/indie games to get your new shmup game fix? Will you become a traitor and start playing RPG's or Call of Duty?

How will you survive the Shoot 'em up apocalypse? Do you think that shoot 'em up games will stop being made any time soon? Have I asked enough stupid questions?

Hell yeah they will. That goes for every other arcade staple genre too.

Any shooter fan should be checking doujins out already, there's bound to be something in there you'll like. Kamui is easily on the level of its pro inspirations from Taito and Raizing. Samidare, Crimzon Clover, Zen-Ichi and Satazius are all great too.

When you combine shmups from the past with all of the indie/doujin stuff, there are enough to last anyone a lifetime.

actually, latest developments rather indicate the opposite. ketsui on the ps3, more and more shmups on xbl, more professional non-cave shmups etc. there also seems to be more interest in the press, as i can see reviews and news about them on sites i haven't seen them before.

if a time comes where there is only one, the last shmup player/fan alive and no more new shmups, he will make a new one himself and initiate the uninitiated...

I'm not worried about the genre dying, just all the worthy developers who really understand what it means to make an arcade shoot-em-up closing shop or moving on. The genre will always persist through lame browser and smartphone games, if nowhere else.

By the time shmups die out as a genre within arcade, we'll already be acting out shmups in real life, blasting away aliens in meticulously crafted spaceships. :D

Yeah, I don't think I'll be able to ALL everything that's been made up to this point, so I don't worry too much. Besides, the doujin scene is pretty healthy even if there are few traditional developers, and those games can be just as good as any arcade STG.

I'm more worried about belt scrollers myself.

I can't stand traditional shmups, specially horizontals so that leaves out almost 2/3 of all the titles ever made. Even so, the amount of things you can do with only one game is so big that I doubt I'll be able to play even 5% of the MAME catalogue seriously.

What it would be a pity is that nothing innovative would ever come out. I dream of another revolution that could popularize the genre or make it more awesome like the birth of Danmaku through Dodonpachi did.

Unlike many modern AAA genres you don't need bundles of $ to make a good shmup just a programmer who knows what he is doing. Kinda wish rail shooters were just as easy to make and not all on the fricking 3DS.

This topic reminds me of how many STG's that were developed with the mindset that the genre is dying and we need to end it with a bang or revitalize it have ended up being classics and selling surprisingly well. For example Radiant Silvergun, DDP Dai Ou Jou, SDOJ(initial arcade release). Sort of inspirational.

This sounds ironic if you also want doujin shmups to be more experimental. It would be strange to say older/"tradional"(this term sounds weird to me) shmups have less experimentation than newer games. Danmaku is a subgenre, not the genre with "more awesome" added to it.

For example I know you like the multiple weapon systems(like hellsinker, RSG, thunderforce..) but Caves "traditional danmaku" games none have tried this concept at all, apart from some YGW games, maybe. I've always found it strange considering how many games they've made that they've never tried out a system with more than three attacks/weapons that don't just add bullet cancelling to the mix.

(sorry for being off-topic)

Yeah, I use that term because it specifically refers to 2D scrolling beat'em ups. IGS is pretty much single handedly keeping them alive (but none of their games have console ports AFAIK). There's Dragon's Crown and a few indie attempts, but I don't trust Vanillaware to do something of 90's Capcom quality and most console stuff I've tried is either too oldschool or too simple/easy. And I don't know of any good doujin games in the genre. It's a very misunderstood and overlooked genre.

A agree I've yet to play a new beat em up I like on the 360, although Vannilaware's might be OK, same goes for what footage I've seen of Code of Princess looks quite good too.

As for shmups, old studios die and make way for new saplings, you only have to look at all the recent STGs coming out which imo is partly because CAVE aren't pumping them out like they were a couple of years ago, making way for newer blood.

As most of the others here, I don't worry about it too much, since there's a pretty large quantity of shmups already, and I'll probably not be able to play them all, let alone 1cc'ing them.

I won't deny the shmups might really end someday, but I can't see it happening so soon... besides, we can still count with the indie/doujin shmups as well since they'll probably last for longer.

Anyway... I can see myself having fun with the games even when I get old. And out of all the developers, I wish a long life especially for CAVE.

Yeah those, Megadrive Beat em up.
A friend of mine was going to do backgrounds, what he did looked fucking amazing, but they are too cheapass to pay him as much as he deserves, so someone else is doing them now I guess. But yeah, MD Cyberpunk Brawler.

If none get made I got an engine I can use now and its pretty easy to work with. I'd just make my own and try to make them progressively more challenging and elaborate as I designed them.
