Steam Star Wars Sale

Post by Moniker »

Steam is going 66% off all its Star Wars games. Any of these worth getting? I've only played Dark Forces and KOTOR.

Battlefront 2
Dark Forces
Jedi Knight
Jedi Knight 2
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith
Republic Commando
Starfighter
The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes
The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition
The Force Unleashed 2
Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic II
Empire at War: Gold Pack

Republic Commando has nice balance for a single-player squad FPS, where your teammates don't feel like either leg irons or babysitters who do everything for you. It's too bad the proposed sequel, Imperial Commando, wasn't made.

Dark Forces is a good too, and almost the opposite: a long Doom-style game where you carry a huge arsenal.

The lightsaber action in Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy is sometimes aggravating, sometimes amazing. You might try the Jedi Outcast demo, which is in a stage that's not part of the full game, to see if it appeals to you.

I didn't finish Starfighter, though from what I played I'd say to avoid it.

What he said. Battlefronts are some of the best SW games, just ignore all the prequel campaigns.

Republic Commando left me cold (then again, so did Halo on PC). Jedi Academy wasn't all bad. Heard good things about Star Wars Episode I: Racer (PC version), but can't see it on the list. (Reportedly Sega had something to do with the coin-op version.)

I had a lot of fun with Starfighter when it was released. I haven't played it in years though, who knows how it has aged.

How's the online scene for the Battlefront games? I might try one myself, but it'd be kind of pointless if there's no competition.

Jedi Knight and the Mysteries of the Sith expansion are well worth getting.

The Force Unleashed games are short, shallow but quite entertaining

my favorite star wars game ever isn´t on that list:

star wars rebellion

get it if you can it´s a strategy game where you develop techs, seeks out the galaxy for ressources, send spys,sabotage,diplomacy,etc...
the allliance must destroy corruscant and capture palpatine.
the empire must destroy the rebel base and have to search them through the galaxy.
spatial fights can be played or skipped.
it´s from 1997 and still is boss.
this game is fantastic.

ps:also there are some mods and a small community still active playing it.

edit:there is a 2 players mode and thats where the game hits the greatness

The list seems to consist of games the publisher got to work on modern PCs. Apparently DC emulation is the easiest way to play Episode I: Racer on a computer nowadays.

I still have the original copy, box and the 500-page manual. It's indeed a great game and is probably the best simulation of the SW universe you can find, but it's incredibly complex and you really need to invest some time to learn all its mechanics. Definitely not the pick-up-and-play kind of game.

Also own this but always thought Dark Forces was way better.

The lightsaber duels in Jedi Academy are just...weird. At least from what I could gather, there's no strategy or tactics or anything to them. Me and my brother played a few matches together but the duels always consisted of "attack furiously and hope you don't drop dead first".

I ended up getting the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series, Battlefront II, and Republic Commando. W/r/t Dark Forces - there's a chap working on an engine similar to zDoom that looks like it's gonna be great, called DarkXL. First beta is due soon, so I may wait on that. Jedi Knight 1 is one of those games I wanted to play so badly when it came out, but didn't have a pc worthy of it. Hopefully it lives up to the olden hype.

As for Jedi Academy's lightsabering, there's a popular mod out that completely revamps light saber combat - Evolution of Combat 3. I'll have to check that out once I get to that stage of Kyle Katarn's journey. ;)

I wish they had the original DOS versions of X-Wing and Tie Fighter.

Yeah, I've been keeping tabs on the XLEngine (specifically DarkXL's part in it) for a long time now. It's been a long time coming, the last alpha almost had it working perfectly with some issues at the final stage but it crashed whenever you clicked 'Next Mission'. When the Beta comes out it'll be a complete DOSBox replacement, and have a lower system requirement than it used to.

I heard Jedi Knight and another game got their source code released the other day after the liquidation of LucasGames, but the repositories from them got taken down some days later. Seems they had a bit of incorrectly-licensed stuff in there. ;)
