Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
According to a survey by the International Dutch Oven Society in 2009, 93% of people surveyed said their nan loves Dogyuun!!
Here's a video of me playing the game this evening (I received it yesterday), some idle chatter and a reasonable score (for my rubbish skills anyway).

Re: Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
It's one of the better Toaplan games. Great weapons, a sensible power-up system (none at all) that makes the checkpoints NOT a pain in the ass, and infinite style points. You are right in the video - it's an absolutely gorgeous shooter.
During that period, they made their best games (Tatsujin Oh, Dogyuun, and Batsugun).
EDIT:
One thing I like, as sort of a fan of more action-platformer type games, is that the boss attacks are more attacks proper, as opposed to bullet spams. It's a nice touch that sets it apart from most shmup bosses that shovel a shitton of pink bullets on you and call it a day. It also makes the sting of losing a bit more palatable, because you can see exactly the thing you need to dodge, and there's no questions about it. Other than "Why am I so bad at this game?"

Yep totally agree with you sir. It's interesting though that it's a game that divides opinion so much. A 'marmite' game if you will...
Re: Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
Love me some Dogyuun to, my favorite Toaplan game after Batsugun. And as you say in the video the game has some really beautiful graphics and design.
Not forget the music, stage 1 got some real catchy tune going on

It's a game I want to get into more for sure at some point. It has some pretty cool features. Have you tried playing with the 1p+2p combo ship? If you start a game with both players and then use the C button to attract the 2nd player ship you merge into a stronger ship. Pretty funky.
Also when it comes to the C button, does anyone know what the benefit of picking up enemies is?

Re: Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
I found one way to use the c button. Use it to grab a powerup container that you know has a bomb in it. Then pick up another loose bomb. When you use the bomb you have, drop the container into the explosion, it will break open. Then backup to pick up the second bomb.
There was one place I could always double bomb some mini boss to kill him instantly.
Added: still didn't really care for it.

Tried really hard to like it. I just can't. All of the weapons feel really underpowered to me, and the counterstop only makes it more detestable...

Very interesting reading these opinions so far (and I liked the video a lot)...
I have been on the fence about buying this one for a while, and in that time it's doubled in price
I think it's one of those games people can't get over one of the many things that makes it "different" from what they are used to, whether it's the checkpoints, strange backpack system, odd powerups, or what-have-you.
Regardless, we can all agree its artistic value is way up there.

Start a 2-player game and fuse with the second ship, problem solved.trap15 wrote:Tried really hard to like it. I just can't. All of the weapons feel really underpowered to me
Do all shmups have to be played for score? With games this old, they simply never would have expected players to survive that long.trap15 wrote:and the counterstop only makes it more detestable...

Re: Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
The counterstop can be done in loop one. Without clearing the game. Because of a boss that never times out. Yeah.

Didn't you read the memo, if a game has a fault in score mechanics then you have to exploit said mechanic - thus the game is ruined

Gun Frontier doesn't counterstop, it just has really shitty checkpoint milkingEmperorIng wrote:And yet you like Gun Frontier.

I don't know about you, but I like to play for score when I play STG and other arcade games, and I'm also part of the 'play to win' mentality, where one should use everything the game gives.chempop wrote:Didn't you read the memo, if a game has a fault in score mechanics then you have to exploit said mechanic - thus the game is ruined

Re: Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
Ok well I've reviewed the game on YT but overall, my comments are:
Graphics very detailed
Sound quality awful (maybe the Korean board?)
I do not like that the only weapons are lasers
Only one of said lasers actually goes where you aim it
Homing weapons don't feel very solid in a shooter
No bullet weapons
I am repeating myself
So I'll end there
But I'm glad I had this game briefly, I hate emulation.
Vimana and Tatsujin Ou are much more up my street in terms of playability.
I am glad I shifted Dogyuun as I just didn't feel it was my cup of tea.
But I don't exactly hate it.

Re: Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
would be good to see a dump of the shitty korean bootleg boards of this and batsugun if anybody has them (the ones where the entire sound system is replaced by an OKI and looped sounds, much like the Fixeight bootlegs)
yeah they're pretty worthless if you're a collector, but from a MAME point of view they document that the games were bootlegged in this way.

Re: Dogyuun. Love it or hate it?
My favorite Toaplan shooter -
Incredible graphics, an unbelievable soundtrack, awesome bosses and diverse level designs. It's pretty much the perfect Toaplan shooter.
The diversity in the game is great - keeping things slow until level 3, where you hit warp speed and go on a medal collect-a-thon... then brings it back and throws a surprise gameplay twist at the end. Great pacing that keeps things fresh. I also love the way it handles bombs - making you choose between a single bomb or the ability to dash. Cool stuff.
I guess the only weak points are not being able to power up your weapons, and the pointless grab technique in the back of your ship (pointless for single players really). Other than that, I feel like this is the pinnacle of Toaplan style games. Batsugun is great, but that's when Toaplan shifted things towards bullet-hell, and I much prefer the classic style found in Dogyuun.
