Super Duper Noob Cave PCB Questions

Post by maxmultiplier »

Hello Everyone,

I need a little advice. I recently purchased a couple of Cave PCB's which contain lithium batteries. I have no way of knowing how old they are. I'm worried that they will eventually leak acid & permanently damage my newly acquired boards.

My question is when & how often should I replace the battery on this type of PCB to ensure proper care?

What if I were to just permanently remove the battery? Would the PCB still operate normally? What features would I lose if no battery is present?

The PCB's are Mushihimesama & Mushi Futari 1.5

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, coin batteries like that don't often leak. If you remove the battery, the RTC stops working (only matters for Ibara I believe), and I think scores are lost after power down. Aside from that they should work fine. As far as replacement, I don't think you really have to replace them for quite a long time. They're designed to last extremely long.

On the average of lasting upwards of five to six years tops with the back-up batteries used on the Cave SH-3 PCBs that use them (in terms of longevity). I had an Cave SH-3 powered Mushihimetama PCB whose back-up battery went kaput...replaced it and it was good as new.

Protip: Place a sticker label with the current date if and when the SH-3 back-up battery is replaced for peace of mind and posterity. Easy as pie.

For future reference, the only cave pcb that really matters battery wise (afaik) is daioujou black label. Removing the battery while the boards powered down will ruin it permanently.
