Hori Ex SE
Sorry if this has been covered recently but I searched and couldn't find anything. I would like to experience SHMUPS on a stick but am not confident in my ability to "mod" anything. I know the hori ex se is not available new in America but is it possible to import a new one from Japan? Would it work on an American xbox 360? If not, are there any other "out of the box" sticks good for shmups? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Hori Ex SE
Pretty sure they were available in North America when it was originally released. Maybe not any more, since I think they're discontinued, but you see used ones pop up now and again and honestly as long as it's not damaged in some way you should grab a used one. Importing a boxed new one from Japan is going to cost you a lot of money.
It will work on any region 360, as well as on a PC without any problems. My only issue with (most, all?) Hori 360 sticks is they don't have a mode-switch for the joystick. My Fighting Stick VX suffers from this, and it means on a PC that you're stuck with having the joystick as a "POV hat" and having to futz with JoyToKey or X-Padder to get it working with most games. Obviously not a problem on the 360, but thought I'd mention it.

You are right. I was trying to say they were discontinued in America. Is the Hori EX SE still the best bet out of the box for shmups if I can find one used? Thanks for your help!

The Hori EX-SE is great out of the box for them 360 based shmups. Amazon.com had a special sale on them for about $85-$95 brand new back in the day as an extra incentive to buy one. Saw it at that attractive pricepoint and snagged one right away.
Another alternative to get/consider, is an Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 arcade stick setup (for the Sony PSX/PS2 console) and use a 3rd-party PSX/PS2 to 360 controller adapter. Works like a charm on a 360 indeed.
