PSP - Ideal Way to Get Video?

Another dumb av question. What's the best way to get video out from your PSP 3000?

Looking around, I think the best quality cable I could find was a component cable. This in mind, would using a Component -> GBS 8220 VGA scaler setup be the ideal solution?

It might actually be really useful to have a single walkthrough/resource to getting the best video quality out of every system, maybe with low/high budget variants. I don't have the knowledge to write that myself though =P.

Component is best on the PSP, but don't forget that you only get windowboxed 480p output from the PSP. In other words, you get the active 480x272 pixel area embedded in a 720x480p signal with HUGE black borders all four sides.

I would get a LKV7000 ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/260915623018 ) instead, since it includes fullscreen scaling for the PSP's signal. The component cable is included and $50 is still affordable.

I use the official D-Terminal cable (JP component) connected directly to my XRGB-mini and the results are great!

Just a heads-up as I dont have full knowledge but..........

You can get full screen game mode output with custom firmware plugin FuSa and the Remote Joy Lite project for monitors.

Might be worth checking out.

I have a LKV7000 and I love it, although I'm sure I paid much less than $56 for it a couple years ago(can't recall where though). I previously had tried another VGA device that doesn't zoom/upscale in conjunction with FuSa but it didn't work. I want to say I tried that cable with Remote Joy Lite as well but I can't actually remember. Either way LKV7000 is the way to go if you want VGA monitor output.

There is also the LKV8000 which outputs in HDMI with smoothing but it's more expensive. From the samples on the site it looks like it makes the picture quality much better but I'd need to see some comparison shots of the two devices that aren't from the manufacturer in order to know if it's really worth it.

The one downside to the LKV7000 is that although it allows you to run a PC hooked up through VGA through it for easy back and forth switching, doing this will cause your computer output to go black for a second or two every few minutes, sometimes so frequently it becomes immensely frustrating. This may just be an odd quirk with my laptop or how I have it set up, or maybe even my monitor itself, but I found this hurdle way too annoying to continue running my PC through it. If you are playing something on the PSP with the help of some online info or passwords or something, the PC/PSP toggle switch might still be useful, but for regular PC usage it is a huge pain in the ass to leave your PC hooked up to the LKV7000. I would be curious to find out if anyone else has had this issue or just me.

How about the LKV8000 1080P version? How does it compare to the XRGB Mini? Is the XRGB Mini better than the XRGB-3 in terms of PSP Zoom? I couldn't get a sharp image from the XRGB-3 because of how my TV treated the VGA input, so I sold it. Have been looking for a good PSP solution ever since.

Forget about the LKV8000. It's a step down from the 7000 model.

If you don't need or want scanlines, then the LKV7000 is pretty ok. At least it gets the aspect ratio right and the image is rather good for the size. No comparison to the XRGBs though.

In terms of PSP image quality the XRGB-3 and the Framemeister are pretty much the same. Here's a comparison shot:

I couldn't imagine what your VGA was doing wrong so you wouldn't get the same results. The Mini achieves the same quality on the HDMI output.

Scanlines are problematic on the PSP, either way...

Whatever "smoothing" the LKV8000 does looks terrible. It also has some overscan compensation built-in that I could never get to agree with my TV to actually get full screen output.

The LKV7000 is much better in both areas, though mine seems to cut off a pixel or two at both the top and bottom of the image.

But don't waste money on either of them if you're planning on eventually getting a Framemeister.

The Sony Bravia have no problem with the PSP's letterboxed signal, maybe Sony made an extra mode for its handheld console. I don't have a Framemeister to compare but I don't think that blowing up a 480x272 image to 40"+ gets much better.

Thanks for the link to that site, Fudoh. I see that it's based out of HK. It's no problem with the shipping end from HK to the USA as it's quite speedy via the air mail route.

It has a PSP preset... That sizes the picture much better than either of the two dedicated PSP upscalers mentioned (LKV 7000&8000).

The Mini's LBX mode is not a perfect match for the PSP. To get a proper AR you have to max out the V-SIZE setting. XRGB-3 and LKV-7000 are easier to use in this regard.

My LKV-7000, while maybe a better match cuts of a pixel or two at the bottom and top. I would rather take a few seconds to adjust the XRGB-mini.

I'm guessing the DVDO Edge's picture zoom would work fine too? I'm actually hoping to pick up a PSP next month so was just curious.

For some reason it gets very blurry on the Edge. The LKV7000 looks better.

And for that matter: the XRGB-3 looks fantastic with the PSP. Why do bother with anything else ? You just have to switch into B0 mode.
