So a local store had Mechwarrior 2 and both its expansions (Ghost Bear's Legacy and Mercenaries). But then when I got home I discovered something:
My copy of MW2 is the DOS version, but GBL is Windows 95.
Can I still install GBL, or will it only work with the Win95 version of MW2?
Thanks in advance.

I think both GBL and Mercenaries were standalones and do not require MW2. Pretty sure anyway, has been a while since I played them (when they actually were new).

Someone at an official mechwarrior 2 forum answered my question. Yes, GBL Win95 will work with Mech2 DOS.
I am a happy Mechwarrior.
MechCommander is still a Battletech tie-in, right? I might need to download that (I kinda-sorta like Battletech).

Yeah MechCommander is Battletech. Amazingly fun game - get the Gold version, as it has the expansion pack and a level editor.
MechCommander 2 is less good but still fun.
MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries is indeed a standalone game. However it's a little buggy (some autocannons don't always register hits when they should, elementals are nigh-impossible to hit) unless there's been a fan patch.

this thread reminds me I need to play this again. I have I think(an updated edition) the titaium(sp?) edition. Hard game but the best of the series.

Re: just bought Mechwarrior 2
I just played one of the Jade Falcon missions... unfortunately I feel like I need to start a new Pilot, because I was interested in seeing if the music works (only main missions have music) so I skipped the story text, and only later realized you can't replay missions (or can you?)
Other than that though, my only issue with this game is that its dull when there's nothing to shoot at. But I'm loving it.
I do wish the music wasn't done as separate audio tracks on the CD though. I don't like having to actually have the CD-ROM in the drive, I prefer to mount an ISO, but when the music is done as separate audio tracks and its not optional, then I have to put the actual CD in.
