There are games that can benefit from the artistic upgrade and keep the gameplay intact. If Sony and Microsoft just think "oh, lets do a 3D FPS", I think thats just so boring and retarded. There are a lot of ideas that nextgen can deliver top notch gameplay with wow factor built in, but nobody has the balls to put something out that is simplistic in design, but has the wow factor.

I still think simple basic stuff like Parodius, Bubble Bobble, Space Harrier, Outrun can be done in 1080 in stupendous colour and imagination.

Talking about some retro games being revamped and all check out puppeteer. I preordered this since I saw the trailer for it. Such a beautiful game.

There isn't a huge amount of classic style games but they have released several in the past.

Both garbage. Heavy Rain can barely be considered a game.
we did an unused recording for the GAF Pod Cast of us playing the demo for Heavy Rain way back in the day and the three of us were laughing at just how bad it was, especially when we got to the Techno Cop character. Fast forward to the final game and (for reasons unknown) i picked it up and , whilst i agree it's not entirely a regular "game" with traditional gameplay, i actually enjoyed what i got. The story is well put together and the different endings make it at least interesting to hear what other people got. This also might be down to timing as well - we had one kid at the time and given the mainthemes are about children and parenting then that probably made it resonate a bit more. Anyways, gameplay wise - yeah - not great, overall experience? I'd say it's worth a look. If you can get over that it's not a traditional game and more interactive drama then it's not bad at all.

Anyways, re: Next gen - bring it on. This has been a very very long gen if you jumped in from day one. Whilst we'll probably get a whole slew of shovel-this-out-from-PC games i'm sure we'll get new experiences or refinements of -good- experiences coming. I've long since got over the idea that the consoles will be pushing ahead of PC's this time so i'll probably be going full on "PC Dad" at some stage in the future but having home consoles with that much more under the hood will be a good thing and hopefully it'll open up some new creative avenues.

regarding MS/Sony and balls - thankfully new franchises do tend to get a run out at the early point in a machines life. Rumours are of 4 new IPs from MS around launch - that said, they might be more broshooters or FPS. But hey - that's a shootgun shot put down : there's no reason why a game in either of those genres can differentiate themselves from the huge pool of dross by bringing new ideas and superior execution to the table.

Contra looks like my ticket. Looks awesome.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
