Eryi's Action - cute and relaxing doujin platformer (NOT!)

Post by Drachenherz »

Atm I'm trying to expand my gamers horizon a bit, and as I was looking for good platformers (any kind of platformer) for the PC, I stumbled about this nice little game:

Eryi's Action

http://nyu-media.com/eryis-action/

The guys from Nyu Media brought it in the west, and I am absolutely (in a masochistic way) thankful for this.

The game is fun. Pure, evily and sadistically fun. It's balls hard. No, that's an enormous understatement: it's completely and utterly unfair. If you play it as a standard platformer jumpnrun, that is. If you consider the bazillion traps the game offers to kill you as puzzles to be solved, then it truly shines. And the countless deaths become actually very, very funny and make you laugh out loud literally.

So, anybody up for a truly hard challenge should give this game a go.

I won't write more about the gajillion traps in the game because I don't want to spoiler some things. Just a heed of caution: even watch your path on the world map. :D

Edit: changed thread title a bit.

You call it "cute and relaxing" and then describe it as being straight up I Wanna Be The Guy.

Does not compute. Unless you were being ironic.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself
<Despatche> you've been a thorn in the shmups community since the beginning, you're largely responsible for the horrible face of modern speedrunning

I'm just doing what the game does... It's trolling you. Hard. ^^ it start's with the title screen which demoes a level... Which seems so easy and relaxing, until you start the game itself and start being kicked in the balls. Repeatedly. By a gorilla with steel plated boots. That got spikes on them. Which are electrically charged.

So yeah, it was a feeble attempt to be ironic. :D

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.

Yeah, they're good for a laugh, or a jovial drunken rage, but not much else. Level design is absurdly easy with masocore platformers. Makes Kaizo SMW hacks look like works of art. (In truth, some of them are..)
The freaks are rising through the floor.

Or you could just play "I Wanna be the Guy" for free:

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Unlike the Roger Eberts of the world, I actually gave the demo a play.

Comparing to IWBTG is incorrect; IWBTG is a run and gun first, with the "traps" being extremely rare and obvious. The bread and butter of that game are the screens lined with spikes and it goes like "try to double jump your way out of this, you poor bastard."

Eryi's Action is solely inspired by Syoban Action, and the associated branch of Asshole Mario rom hacks (who would have thought).

One of the essential pillars of the super genre, is humor. This is why you explode in blood in IWBTG. "Cherries don't fall up"/the absurdity (and nostalgia) of Kraidgiff/"did Pedobear just kill me?!?!" There was little of this to be found with Eryi; I did laugh at the block you can hit multiple times that explodes, but that was it.

On some level I appreciate the realism of these things. If I lived in a magical wonderworld where nothing makes sense, I'd be paranoid of every miscolored spike, seam in the ground... I would definitely eliminate spurious movements altogether, too.

Unfortunately, Syoban Action isn't a game. You don't need to have skill or precision, you don't have to get good at jumps, there isn't any challenge once you know the stage. In the end, it's more like Dragon's Lair than Super Mario Brothers.

There's nothing wrong with humor, there's nothing wrong with surprise sex traps, they just need to be done decently with an underlying game holding it up. Perhaps Eryi's Action gets better in the later levels, but the demo doesn't show any of that. And in my experience as an old jaded neckbeard sperglord supreme, demos are dead accurate to the overall quality of a game.

2/5 Icycalms.
