It's safe to do it when it's on. For the best results, see if your game has a grid in the TEST menu. Oh, and let the monitor warm up for about 20 minutes, or the geometry might change will you adjust it.Xeno wrote:Stupid question but I have to ask...
I have OK Baby arcade cabinet with Hantarex polo chassis and that has remote control board like this http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/2525/bild2804.jpg
Is it safe to adjust the picture settings from that when the cabinet is powered on, or only when it´s not powered?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Does anyone else use a Sony PVM20L2 that has been properly calibrated?
I ask because as I was trying to adjust the geometry in the service menu (and foolishly not writing down the settings) I inadvertently caused my PVM to now look horrible and crooked.
Does anyone happen to have calibrated or default values for the settings in the service mode?
Preferably the Focus, Raster H, Raster V and Geometry settings?
I'm at my wits end as the screen is slightly tilted and crooked and I can't for the life of me figure out which setting to tweak to fix it. Any help is MUCH appreciated!!

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I got overly excited yesterday while playing gunlord and poured some beer over myself and my agetec,
resulting in sticky buttons.
Can't figure out how to separate the buttons, and the quality seems to be very delicate. Read somewhere that it's off the shelf happ buttons, but can't find these when searching.
Any recommendations here?
The easiest would of course be if I somehow could separate the switch from the buttons and just soak them. Without breaking them.
EDIT: lukemorse1 saved the day. Just two more tabs to press, now I feel stupid.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Finally taken the decision to import myself a Japanese Xbox 360.
So just wondering if my Xbox 360 PAL slim power supply are compatible with a Japanese Xbox 360 slim?
My only stepdown converter is a huge monster. and not really meant for small devices like this...

absolutely. The NTSC ones don't have a fan though (in case you mind). So just wondering if my Xbox 360 PAL slim power supply are compatible with a Japanese Xbox 360 slim?

Thanks for the answer!Fudoh wrote:absolutely. The NTSC ones don't have a fan though (in case you mind).
Woah... there's a fan inside my PSU?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
When the slims launched here in Europe, several people complained that their PSUs were actually louder than the machines themselves... (though bullshit imo).

I believe I own the launch model. Bought it 2 days after release. Never noticed any noises from the PSU...
Gonna put my ear next to that thing next time. Just to check.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
do wii emulators, (snes, NES, megadrive and pc engine specifically) have noticeable input lag when played on a CRT?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
A "Gefen Home Theater Scaler plus" unit has shown up on a semi-local sales listing for 250 sek (~30 euro/38 usd). I'm curious, considering the price, but can't really find much in the shape of reviews about it.
Anyone heard about this Gefen product before, is it worth picking up?

Ah, of course, should've checkedFudoh wrote:reviewed on my page (WAY down) http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/

Doesn't seem too useful then, sadly. Curious about the composite quality but probably won't be that good

Thanks anyway.

Electronic diagrams 101

Am I understanding the above diagram correctly in that +5V is supposed to be connected to Colour input and colour input is supposed to be connected to ground in both cases with a 10k resistor in between?
I know it plainly seems that way but I just find it strange that +5V would be connected to the video input and video input would be connected to ground. My understanding of electronics is minuscule though, so just to be on the safe side I thought I'd ask.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Anyone tried a 2560x1440 monitor for retro gaming? Lags aside, how would the image show up? It would be perfect if it can do 1:3 pixel mapping for 480p materials or 1:2 pixel mapping for 720p stuffs (the mini)
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Keep in mind that monitor is significantly higher resolution than 1080p, which I believe is the highest resolution the Mini will scale to. Therefore, the panel itself will still end up doing some scaling, and the result might be less pretty than if the monitor natively scaled a smaller image, and instead of a *3 upscaling, it'll be more like a * .5 (50%) scaling, which I don't see working well. In any case lag might be severe as well, as at the minimum you're using the monitor itself to scale, and at most you're running two scalers.gundamalpha wrote:Anyone tried a 2560x1440 monitor for retro gaming? Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
with halfway proper scaling engine it just doesn't matter if the target resolution is a integral match of the source resolution or not. Also, keep in mind that 480p doesn't use square pixels.
All this said, a friend uses the Mini in 720p on a Dell 27" with 1440p and it looks stunning. Another friend uses a 27" Dell with 1080p instead and it looks just as good (720p output from the Mini as well).

What about this power supply for an Emotia?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AULT-SC300-TYPE ... 0514640281
Seems about right, but the input amps are lower. Not sure if that matters.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I think the amps are a little higher than required actually, can't see any reason why that wouldn't work...
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Yeah, the output amps are higher, but the input amps are lower. I don't know what that means so I just want to be sure before I commit.
And one other noob question. Once I do get the emotia powered up, how do I plug a game system into it? It seems to only have a monitor-type plug for input.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
that's right. And here you connect your VGA source. What game system where you thinking of ?It seems to only have a monitor-type plug for input.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
PS2/XBOX/GC/Wii/DC. I see now they do sell VGA cables for most of those, so I'd assume that's what I need. Or should I just get a linedoubler with VGA output (which I need for 480i anyways) and not bother with individual cables?
And can you say whether or not the power supply I linked to would work?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I think the supply will work (if wired correctly), I used one with lower specs that seems to work fine (for now).
The emotia is really only useful for systems that will output VGA but not 240p. An Xbox 360 really.
You can also use it for some DC games that will only run in 480i over SCART RGB (by downscaling from VGA mode instead).
An Emotia will lock onto a PS2 SoG VGA game like Gradius V and display in 240p, but will have a green tint. The Super Emotia fixes that pretty well.
A GC VGA cable is a very expensive homemade cable (hacked component DAC). I guess it might make a nice luxury item as, IIRC, the GC cannot do 240p.
Wii cannot do native VGA, so no use there.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Sorry, should've been more specific. A Super Emotia GX is what I'm getting.
Sounds like getting VGA out of some systems could be tricky.
But again, any reason I can't just use a linedoubler and have it work with everything?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
A linedoubler enables you to use more sources (480i) with your Emotia, but a linedoubled 480i image isn't as clean as a real 480p source, so you should at least use 480p into the Emotia whenever possible.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Ok, cool, I'll use progressive when possible. But it seems like I'll need a linedoubler to convert to VGA anyways since most SD systems don't have native support (only Dreamcast?).
Which would be the best to use with an Emotia between the iScan Pro, HDbox Pro, and Brite View?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
The Iscan Pro is way better than the other two, but none of the three has a RGB input.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Ok, thanks. I've never used RGB before so I don't think that should be a problem for me as long as it works with other inputs.
