Nintendo Retires DS Line

Post by Friendly »

Nintendo released its annual report yesterday, and and after losing money for the first time in decades in 2011 they managed to return to black numbers in 2012.
They also announced that they will be stopping production of all DS models (currently DSi/XL), of which 2 million units were sold in 2012, presumably because they are cannibalizing 3DS sales.

As the name shows, even Nintendo didn't expect DS to take off like it did and didn't treat it as a Game Boy sucessor at first. What a great handheld it was; I am still enjoying my DSi XL. Only downside of DS/DSi was the lack of a texture filter. Luckily that didn't matter much, since most of the best games are in 2D.

They're not still stocking original DSes anywhere are they? Or do you mean that entire line (which I assume includes DSi/XL)?

Kind of OT, but is there a best of NDS games thread on the forum? I can't seem to find one in the search.

New thread are go!

Speaking of which, DS doesn't have a Thunderbirds game, now does it? Damn those systems, they are weak.

(still rockin' my DS but haven't bought a game in a long while, never had many to begin with.)

I was actually hoping for people to post some suggestions here.

Let me start with a game you probably haven't played and that's quite unusual for DS: Nanashi no Game (The Nameless Game), a horror adventure title. It wasn't published outside of Japan, but there is a fan translation (I think 1.2 is the latest release).

Another recommended adventure game is 999 (recently got a sequel on PSV/3DS). 999 was only released in the US and Japan, but since DS games aren't region locked, go import if you don't live there!

I thought it was interesting that when Nintendo first rolled out the DS, they said it wasn't a successor to the GBA, but another product series completely, and the GBA would still get a successor. Opps! :P
