Gradius 1 console ports

Post by Edge »

How many console ports or home computer ports of the original Gradius (Nemesis) are there?

And what are their differences?

I have played the NES port a lot, but compared to the Nemesis in Mame it's really not that alike.

As far as I remember there is one for the PC-Engine and the C64. What are the differences?

What port would you consider to be the best?

Saturn port in the Gradius Deluxe Pack (has 1 and 2). Pretty much arcade-perfect. Haven't played the PS1 version (I think there's a GDP for PS1, not 100% sure), so can't comment on that.

Best thing is that it goes for around $20-$30 wulongs.

MSX also has a port with an exclusive additional stage in it.

Though probably not the best port, it's fine enough and plays excellently.

There are quite a lot of ports (for almost every machine available at that time).

If you want an arcade-perfect port your best bet is the Gradius Deluxe Pack. It's for PS1 as well, as LoneSage suspected. The PS1 port is sadly much more expensive than the Saturn one, and Gradius II runs in slow-motion when played on a PS2.

If, however, you want a decent port with some extra, go for the PCE one. It's cheap, much better port than the NES one and has an extra level not found anywhere else. There are some pics of it in the shmups.com review.

For some info on the other ports, check out Gradius Homeworld. Pretty much the best Gradius-site there is.

Thanks for the infos. :D

Guess I'll be looking for the PC-Engine port. As I don't find the NES port that bad... it is just different. I like some aspect like the hidden secrets and the Rank is not that insane.

I don't know if it's only Mame, but the collsion detection feeled a bit strange on the arcade Gradius. Compared with the NES port...

Or is Gradius just crappy emulated?

I have the PCE port, and am perfectly happy with that. Good choice if you ask me.

What Ghegs and Seven said. The PCE Gradius Hucard is a beautiful port and AFAIK can still be found for a reasonable price. I am glad I own it although I also own the Gradius Deluxe pack because as said before, it is a very good port with an extra stage. Plus I like to play it on my TE/GT in the office now and then. 8)

NEC PC-88 also has a nice port, too bad it's tough to find roms for it these days.

Of course it is pretty obscure, and actually has Super Mario Bros. Special on it.
