Game genres I don't "like"

Post by TLB »

Sports games blow. I wanna play a sport I go outside.

Games with lots of random t-b battles. Why do people hate themselves enough to keep buying that crap? Let 'em tank until they're all Tales of Star Ocean.

Nimtendogs. Is this shit even serious software? Was it coded by grannies on meth? Why?

That feeling when your favorite RPG is actually a beat-em-up.

also, Nintendogs was made because it would print money, just like why Nintendo keeps making NSMB games that are just barely competent and no more
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I get the intent but find no appeal in survival horror games.

Simulation games
This is probably because I'm usually not interested in what they are trying to simulate. I'm sure that I would find Flight Simulators amazing if I would aspire to be a pilot. However, the genre has expanded so much that I really have a hard time seeing the appeal for some of the games, other than for "educational" purposes that is (then again, maybe that's the whole point of them... I can't really say since I'm not a fan). Some examples are Forklift Truck Simulator, Crane Simulator, Garbage Truck Simulator and Road Work's Simulator. I guess "pet games" would also fall under this category although I'm not sure if that's a genre on it's own.

Gambling games
Wheel of fortune, casino games etc. I don't mind playing card games IRL though.

Visual novels
I enjoy reading books and mangas but I have a hard time playing visual novels for some reason. Maybe I just haven't given the genre a proper chance or found one that's for me. I've gotten a couple of recommendations though so I might have to check those out at some point.

Modern FPS games I still play QuakeWorld and it's from 1996 and is still the best FPS, I don't get why Call of Duty is so popular. To me every COD game is the same.
But have to confece that I enjoyed Call of Duty 2, but after the first Modern Warfare they all feel the same, and all the other companys use it as a guide line, Shit. Give me back my rocketlaunchers, axes and chainsaws to slay some demons.

A little (or by some standards, extremely) off topic, but I think some genres become hated because of how modern adaptations of successful games of the genre wrecked it. I loved Command and Conquer during the 90s and got myself immersed in RTS, but nowdays games in this genre are lackluster, so much that you can say I hate RTS now.

Although tbh I never liked sports and racing game. Hell I even hate sports IRL. They should make a drug or beer genre for those virtual smack addiction times.
This is my signature. It's so unique, nobody else has it.

I pretty much play anything you throw my way, with the exception of team sports games. Soccer, basketball, baseball...for some reason I just don't like them at all. I avoid them like the plague.

Very annoying that most people around here only care about soccer games.

I'm sure casino simulations are on the bottom of the poop pile here.

But they're probably the most popular genre.

I really don't get why folks harsh on NSMB. I thought NSMB & NSMBWii were fantastic. Just all-around solid feel and level design. Haven't played the latest two due to not having the hardware. Sure, they're not as glorious as the Mario Galaxy games, but the latter are among the greatest games ever made, and the former are still among the best at the 2D Mario table.

Not sure if serious. The mini games are simple, but the game does get challenging. Losing definitely happens in Wario Ware, especially on the harder modes where the games are sped up or you get only one chance.
realistic racing games (Need for speed)
A good chunk of Need for Speed games are arcade style, not realistic.

As long as we're being generous with genre definitions, I'll go ahead and say that games with a native 16:9 aspect ratio mostly suck. That's that shit I don't like.

I felt raped when I paid full price for the original NSMB. All the buzz was convincing, but when I sat through the whole game it was probably one of the biggest gaming disappointments of my life.

Fuck NSMB.

Easy as fuck. I would just run through enemies and take a hit because I knew a powerup would be seconds away. There's no longer incentive to think, plan, or dodge.

Just give me the World 9s as DLC without needing to own the discs.

RTS. Total clusterfuck of a genre. The only ones I can stomach are the Total War games.

Oh, you've got a daughter, nice, yippee.

Genre I don't like:

hm...well not much really. Some genres definitely have less intensity overall, owing to what they're about, but I rarely dislike them. I don't play sports games though.

Re:NSMB being too easy--
2D Marios have always been easy, with the possible exception of the Lost Levels. SMW case in point. Still insane fun, though.

The only sports games I've ever been able to get into have been hockey ones. Not sure why; I don't particularly like hockey. Probably the infinitude of 2on2 matches of Gretsky64 back in the day. Maybe a soccer game here and there, because as far as videogames are concerned, they're basically identical to hockey.

Never played a match 3 game that I liked. So I guess I don't like those.

Eh, I can understand the sentiment. They're games made for people who are terrible at games, so if you're not terrible at games, you really shouldn't buy them.

Zelda and Mario NES edition are as hardcore as they're going to come. At least until you have an AI that can just whip up a challenging game just for you.

All right, you want me to help you improve at Sports games? I'll help you, but keep in mind I'm most experienced with NBA Jam on the Sega Genesis, which is my favorite sports game.

Really, the skill you need to develop is learning to sense (rather than see) your player's position since the camera stays on the ball itself. This is easy to develop though. Also, learn to only use turbo sparingly, and while making those flashy dunks is nice, only go for it if you're already ahead.

Unlike in real basketball, you can knock down other players and steal the ball. A good tactic is to just harass the hell out of whoever has it. Also, "goal tending" means catching the ball during a downward arc--in other words, once its hit the basket, you can try to grab it. That being said, there's no real penalty for goal tending, so do it if you're desperate.

Finally, at first you want to learn to make dunks. They're safer than shooting three-point shots. If you manage to get "on fire" though, and if you're ahead by a large margin, then go ahead and score three-pointers.

Hope that helps!

There are some exceptions, but I hate most RPGs, both Japanese and Western. They focus so much on their (mostly terrible) stories that they offer very little in gaming. I usually like RPGs more when they focus less on being RPGs and more in being good games (Gothic 2, The Witcher 2, Vagrant Story).

Can't stand visual novels either, for similar reasons.

Yeah visual novels can take a hike. This whole GTA sandbox thing is pretty gay and nothing like real gaming, doesn't help that the theme is repugnant either.

I'm afraid FPS will have to get a mention as well, not that it's an inherently bad idea, but the modern CODs etc just don't appeal to me like your Unreal T2003s and your Quake 3 Arenas etc.

And there has been about five trillion of them released since Doom. Enough already.

There are others - oh yeah modern semi-sim racers like GT and all that - pretty soulless stuff. I could see the appeal for an auto enthusiast, but not so much for a gamer, for the reasons previous posters have already explained in great clarity.
