Just in today... a really nice custom JPN famicom style repro of Miracle of Almana. Also made a NM poster out of various images I found on the web.

I have far too many posters that I don't have room to hang, so seeing cool stuff like this makes me wish I could add a gaming wing to my house

Helpful hint for Flash Hiders: When you start the story mode, before each fight you'll get an options screen. You have to turn off the Auto Mode, or the game will play itself and you won't have any control over your character.

Thanks and yeah I hear you on that one. I guess as long as the various posters in the collection are the same size, could rotate different ones in/out of the frames for when you want a change of pace.undamned wrote:Nice Ninja Masters poster!I have far too many posters that I don't have room to hang, so seeing cool stuff like this makes me wish I could add a gaming wing to my house

So spill it, what's Akihabara shopping like presently? Last time I was there it had become ludicrously expensive unless you stick to the intermediate to low desirability stuff (as you seem to have done.) Did you check out the prices on the rest? Report plz.

Well, I didn't have such an easy time finding games I want, and one reason is certainly that the selection in Japanese game shops has noticeably thinned out, but another is that I already own most of the games I really want, hence the potential pool of games I could purchase is also much smaller.
A couple of observations:
- I was there durig peak season (cherry blossom time) and every single gameshop I visited in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto had other foreign tourists in them who bought games.
- Especially Super Potato and Retro Champ in Akiba are pretty much tourist traps. Selection of CIB 8 and 16 Bit games is particularly poor. Friends, Trader and Mandarake Galaxy had the best selection of shops I visited in Tokyo.
- At the A-Too in Osaka some American dude literally bought half the games from the premium display case (stuff like Batsugun, Garegga, Vampire Killer) – seemed like an Ebay reseller to me – and at the A-Too in Kyoto some Spanish guy bought a stack of quality Neo Geo games (stuff like Samsho 4, RB2, KoF98, etc), so my impression was that foreigner are indeed carting as much out of the country as possible.
- As you mentioned, I think it is indeed the case that the premium titles are getting more and more expensive (Eliminate Down ¥36000 Yen, Gleylancer ¥16000, Wild Guns ¥16000, Undercover Cops SFC ¥22000, etc.) while the deals are especially to be had in the low- to mid-range. A lot of the PS1 and Saturn games I bought were ¥100-200. I was mostly looking for steals and deals.
- Some popular and very common games, especially for SFC and MD, are actually impossible to find boxed. Was looking for F-Zero, but did not find one CIB. Games like Axelay, Rockman X or Castlevania IV I didn't see anywhere. Seems like these sorts of classics are what most people are after.
- PCBs are getting REALLY expensive, and seems the prices are aligning more between Japan and the West.
- Nonetheless it's still possible to get some good deals on premium titles. Pulled the CIB Contra (complete with Konami collector's card) out of the bargain bin at A-Too in Kyoto for ¥1800. Don't ask me why they were throwing it out like that.

Thanks much CIT. I'm not going to visit Japan next time with a view for much shopping, I might just get some advance YHJ orders to collect.
Your experience is exactly as I expected, basically the same as it was a few years ago, except those premium titles are even more costly now. I also found the best selections in the stores you mentioned, but I felt ripped off on some stuff after seeing them at half the price on this very forum shortly after returning.
Foreigners have been exporting like there's no tomorrow for so long now it's clearly impacted availability and costs in a big way. A friend living there for ten years said finding boxed Nintendo stuff (basically anything in cardboard) is becoming very difficult, at least in good condition.
It's definitely true what you can't find in Japan you can find on ebay. Kind of shameful really that everyone plundered videogames as such easy flip material, but gamers are a demographic attracted to the country in the first place, so the predicament tallies.
I hope you're wrong about PCB prices lining up with the west: they're still fairly reasonable here compared to Japan in many respects, even though there's been an increase over the last few years.
I feel sad I only got to experience shopping heaven there once, but on the positive, at least I did experience it once (and made it count. The wheels broke off my suitcase on the way to the airport when I was leaving.

Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)

Under Defeat actually arrived yesterday, but because the weather was shit I never actually left the apartment to stay inside and record speedrun attempts instead. Bionicle Heroes was free at Game (all the other free games they had left were kid games. Okay, so I guess that might be too, but...). I guess it could be good for a blind stream or something. The CD case is a different new one from the one in my last picture and actually my third one, after moving my Wii games from the first one to the second one so my first one became X360 only, I intended to use remaining space in the one with Wii games for PS/PS2 games including some burned ones, but quickly realized that I'd need a separate one for PS2 games if I wanted to put in all the ones I wanted to put in. So I got myself one more.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself
<Despatche> you've been a thorn in the shmups community since the beginning, you're largely responsible for the horrible face of modern speedrunning

Nice! Did you get them at release? If I remember correctly there are 3x6 dioramas in the full series, debuting in 2003. Got this one blind boxed from Japan and would love the whole set, but they demand quite high prices online these days.undamned wrote: Haha, I have the rest of that setIt's part of a series called "Salaryman Heroes."

Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
I think that's a good price for G2 from Akiba (glad to see you rekindling the love.) I think forum prices wouldn't be too far off for a bare board (maybe £250) less the art, while FK's are closer to £350 here.RGC wrote:I picked up a galuda2 kit minus box for 200 quid from Mak, and a mountain of sfc carts from SP and Trader. Like CIT, I was also there during cherry blossom season. Lucky for me I hate packaging, meaning I could fit many loose carts in my suitcase. I think the most expensive one cost me about 3500 jpy/£25- R-type 3. Might have been cheaper on domestic ebay, but I was there, saw it and thought 'fuck it'.Skykid wrote:Nice haul Ben! I guess most if not all of my haul would count as low desirability...maybe.
Gotta ask, you say FK minus the box, did that even include the suction hanger and spinner disc? Cos G2's art was reprinted several times over, but not the other commodities. I don't think those bits and a box are quite worth £150 extra smackers, but a moderate additional sum.

I do have the topper with the big logo and lighting - but it's too heavy to safely lift up on my own and I'm not sure it's going to fit between the machine and the garage roof

Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.
