How to enable rapid auto fire on Darius Gaiden on MAME?
How to enable rapid auto fire on Darius Gaiden on MAME?
With the latest version of MAME, I hit F2 but don't see a way under config to set rapid auto fire, which is faster than the default autofire.

I don't think the official MAME builds have ever included autofire. Get a custom build, like ShmupMAME or a MAME Plus! derived build.
Re: How to enable rapid auto fire on Darius Gaiden on MAME?
Maybe the game is telling that you shouldn't use autofire.Aleksei wrote:don't see a way under config to set rapid auto fire

Re: How to enable rapid auto fire on Darius Gaiden on MAME?
shut up KAI, I can't get passed the 4th level any route i take.
I dl'd shmupmame and it worked thanks! I also noticed that Battle Garegga had a 1.5 mill extend but there is only the option to extend every 2 mill, how do I get to the 1.5 mill extend setting?

You have to play this romset:
Battle Garegga (Europe / USA / Japan / Asia) (Sat Feb 3 1996)

It makes me sad that people feel like they have to resort to rapid-fire setups to beat this game. You're really going to cheapen the experience for yourself, Aleksei.

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Hey, once I clear it on rapid fire I will go back to regular auto fire, the thing is I am frustrated that I can't make any progress with regular fire, its not cheapening my experience MR. 1337.

Re: How to enable rapid auto fire on Darius Gaiden on MAME?
If game designers are too lazy to deal with the potential for autofire to ruin their game, fuck 'em. There's no excuse. Autofire is as ubiquitous as controllers.

Re: How to enable rapid auto fire on Darius Gaiden on MAME?
I believe with Garegga, the "proper" settings are to put the extend at "every 1000K" to keep things on equal footing with score-chasers.
MameUIFX32 has autofire options, and until I got Shmupmame 4, it was the go-to MAME I used, because unlike every other version it didn't take a full 1-2 minutes to boot, or 5 minutes to do a directory search...
With Darius Gaiden it's honestly pointless to control rank. If you grab every powerup you are in a far better position to succeed (by sheer muscle-power) than some retarded dance of picking up this power-up here, leaving that one there behind, and so on. It's all about your missiles, ha.
I play the Saturn version, so I don't get fancy things like savestates to practice my runs. All or nothing, baby.

A simple experiment contradicts that: in the first stage let the last red power-up go by before reaching Golden Ogre and watch how fast he goes down.....
Same with one of the 3rd bosses (can't remember its name, it's a big round fish with bony tail).
Collect everything and prepare to fight him for what feels like an eternity.
I'm not saying this is etched in stone, but this was my experience with Darius Gaiden....
Re: How to enable rapid auto fire on Darius Gaiden on MAME?
Paying attention to Darius Gaiden's adaptive difficulty can definitely help you out. Avoiding boss body part destruction especially and secondarily trying not to collect power-ups when you're already maxed (you get 5,000 points) can make a huge difference in the later levels.
And it's not so much avoiding shot power-ups to keep the adaptive difficulty down, but rather getting the right amount in each stage so that your weapon is at a suitable level for the boss. The worst thing you can do is power your shot up to the first level in the next "grade" of power (where your shot consists of only one weak projectile) just before a boss. The reason Golden Ogre goes down so fast isn't so much to do with the tiny difficulty increase associated with grabbing that extra red medal, but the fact that three white bullets do far more damage than two of those yellow lasers. The white projectiles do the most damage of all the shot projectiles in Darius Gaiden; the downside being that they can't pierce anything.

Save states don't work for me on DG, whenever I use them my ship disappears...and as for the rank, I noticed a slight difference but as EmperorIng pointed out, brute force works as well, i guess its more important if you're trying to superplay but I'm trying to 1cc, so far the autofire has gotten me over the hurdle and I am on stage 5 deciding between K and L zones. WWJD?

Re: How to enable rapid auto fire on Darius Gaiden on MAME?
Great tip. This actually hadn't occurred to me. I always just get the wave shot as soon as possible, on the assumption that the next shot type is always immediately stronger. So obvious, though, that this isn't quite how it works...The worst thing you can do is power your shot up to the first level in the next "grade" of power (where your shot consists of only one weak projectile) just before a boss.

What would Proco do?
Double Dealer is far easier to deal with than Fatty Glutton (K). Fatty Glutton is a real nightmare if you're not prepared, or if you've run out of bombs.
Most of the time, using a "makeshift autofire" (ie tapping really fast) does more than enough to take out the bosses before they are too much a threat in those crucial early stages. Plus, in some instances, bombs were meant to be used (though if I'm doing good I won't need to use one until the fourth stage).

I'm not denying the rise in health or difficulty, but in most respects, Golden Ogre is an easy enough boss to where upping the difficulty is not that big a huge factor weighed against getting the wave power-up sooner.Kollision wrote: A simple experiment contradicts that: in the first stage let the last red power-up go by before reaching Golden Ogre and watch how fast he goes down.....

When I first played this (without autofire) I honestly thought the game was broken or that I wasn't doing something right because the bosses seemed to have waaay too much hp. Played with autofire every since.
Well, they do if you get stuck on the weakest shot anyway.

Hysteric Empress's Random Bubble Circle of Doom is the one attack in the game I've never figured out a way to avoid consistently. Bombs are there to help you learn and deal with patterns that would otherwise make the game much less forgiving, but everything else can be dodged consistently without bombing.EmperorIng wrote:Plus, in some instances, bombs were meant to be used (though if I'm doing good I won't need to use one until the fourth stage).
Though when the game's adaptive difficulty gets near the maximum, some boss attacks can cover considerably more of the screen and become very challenging to avoid... Thankfully, these generally aren't final boss attacks. They're mostly early bosses which you would never have the difficulty that high at to begin with, although some of Crusty Hammer's attacks sure become insidious at max difficulty.
I find a lot of misconceptions about boss health in this game come from people not making full use of their weapons. White bullets do a lot more damage than piercing beams, and your rockets are an essential part of your arsenal. You will take down most bosses in a timely manner if you make sure to hit with rockets along with your shot--without the need for rapidfire abuse.AntiFritz wrote:When I first played this (without autofire) I honestly thought the game was broken or that I wasn't doing something right because the bosses seemed to have waaay too much hp.

Any player looking to 1CC (I'm one of them) knows to avoid Crusty Hammer and Neon Light Illusion like the plague!
