As for Space Giraffe... I've tried again this week but it just isn't gelling, those fucking background visuals and slightly off collision detection still leads to so many deaths that I genuinely feel aren't my fault.

It's one of those games where you need intense focus to play, but luckily a lot of the enemies make audible cues as well so you can anticipate what's coming. Once you get into that zone though, it becomes quite an addictive game.
There is the PC version available with the toned down visuals, though.

It's certainly addictive, but the collision detection is a mess. Bullets hit you about half a second away from actual contact. If that was fixed, and I could turn the light show off, one of the best games this generation no contest.
You should try the PC version then. There's a new mode with less convoluted gfx and both modes on the PC version have more forgiving bullet collision detection.
Space Giraffe - basically, once you get to a certain level you are pretty much playing on audio cues because the visuals are a bad trip hippy nightmare. It's a pretty weird experience when it all falls into place though and the game is yet another Minter classic.
And that was also part of the journey as well - the lack of a good tutorial (that everyone complained about) enhanced the discovery process if you let go and you didn't approach this as being a Tempest game.
I cannot wait for TxK. Bring it on
