Zelda: A Link to The Past 2

Post by MOSQUITO FIGHTER »

Surprise Nintendo is making a new Zelda game. Anyway I think the increased verticality could be interesting.

Hoy fuck, I concur!

LTTP 2! Wowww (does best to decrease anticipation based on the relative mediocrity of recent Zelda games but... Wowww.)

Great news, but the original Link to the Past (from 22 years ago!) looks so much nicer than this.

Slightly higher production values wouldn't hurt (and this is not a problem of the prehistoric resolution 3DS screens that frugal Nintendo opted for).

Anway, there is no denying 3DS's library is becoming great quickly and it probably is in must-own territory by now. I never doubted I'd eventually buy one, I was just hoping for the region-lock to be defeated first. While a kernel exploit was discovered 4 months ago the hacker who found it isn't releasing it. I'll try to hold out a little longer, but Nintendo is making it really hard.

New Zelda: A Link to the Past: Nintendo Land Edition

More cheap, sterile looking rehashes from the creatively bankrupt company.

Looks really nice. Somewhere at Nintendo there are people who still know how to make some very creative games (see Mario Galaxy), and I'm getting that vibe here. The 3DS has got a ways to go for me to become a favorite console, but 2013 is proving to be an amazing year for it.

One man's Gran Turismo is another man's Shenmue. I don't have a problem with Nintendo steering clear of such vanity projects, but these graphics in a Zelda game still make me a bit sad. Ironically, the original Link to the Past already looked fairly antiseptic, and yet I'd found austere graphics in that game (and Super Mario World) way more soulful than what I see here.
I assume 3D makes quite a difference, but does anyone like those screens better than just about any Capcom Zelda (count 'em all)?

Have you played Mario 3D land? If that's what passes for creatively bankrupt these days, shit, I'll take it.

Only downside I think is the graphics, would love it to be same style as first Link to the Past.
Don't know if they made it look like this because it's easier to make it or if they think people dont like real 2d anymore. :/

The original LTTP is beautiful. Seriously Obiwan, never encountered someone with such an impressive catalogue of taste faux pas accompanying pointless conjecture about framerates and bitmaps. LTTP's graphics were simple but elegant, and perfectly atmospheric; they still hold up.

And your statement isn't ironic.

3D LTTP is never going to match 2D, but I'm sure there are some pretty scenes to come. Graphically I think this sequel is looking cosily familiar, and that's more than enough for me. I just hope someone on the Zelda staff pulls their head out their ass and gets back to basics.

Glad you had a good experience with mario 3d land. I picked it up when I got my 3DS, but haven't put more than 10 minutes into it due to my huge backlog of video games. I've heard it is sort of a 'galaxy lite', in the sense that level design feels pretty creative. Looking forward to it.

It's a blast. It feels like a combination of traditional 2D Marios merged with Galaxy style creativity and a ton of new stuff that often had me sitting there wondering how Nintendo still manage to pull off gaming so impressively after all these years, when other companies struggle to even build a game in a playable form.

I think I sat down with 3D land and played for 30 minutes and turned it off, thinking it was ok, pretty nice. Next time I sat down I pretty much ended up playing until my battery died. I couldn't get off it. I bombed through the entire thing (both legs... you'll see) in 2 days.

But it's true other Nintendo IP's have fallen by the wayside a little. I don't think Zelda has ever fully recovered since Wind Waker, but the vids of LTTP2 look enormously promising. Loving the paper Zelda wall crawling, that's going to be a great brain teaser.

One of the levels in Mario 3D Land is clearly modeled after a Zelda-style of level (overhead view only, dodging obstacles), it's pretty interesting what they managed to do with it despite a relatively limited view area.

Yeah, I've been playing some Super Mario 3D Land. That game is really solid. Nintendo definitely put in some elbow grease into that one. I haven't played the Galaxy games yet but 3D Land is a very fresh, creative, and enjoyable game to me.

I can't say that I'm all that into the New Super Mario games. I haven't played any of them except for the first one. I thought they kind of phoned that one in. It's just not as good as the old ones. Which is disappointing because I think they could be really great games too.

What's both kind of heartening and disappointing is that the New Mario Bros. series is their best seller.

The thing that pesters me the most about the New Zelda trailers is how he's dicing up electric cucumbers like it ain't no thing. That's not how I remember the sword -> walking cucumber interaction going down. At least, not before The Ultimate Sword.

Nintendo started doing this thing with their style around when the wii came out. Everything is round and bloated and looks more like a plush toy than a character/enemy/object. They all make jarringly soft squeaky noises and even slightly harsher sounds are generally muted or covered up with arbitrary musical notes. The music is almost exclusively quiet orchestral stuff with no energy.

As solid and fun as they manage to make the game itself, i cringe every time i have to watch one of their cutscenes or character flourishes/poses. It's all just grossly overdone kidproofing.
Dimahoo is a fun game.

bleh. Another entry in a franchise that is long past its heyday is all I see. And arbitrarily tacking the name of a past installment onto itself...

It reminds me of when they started making sequels to Final Fantasy VII.

Hey Nintendo, how about releasing or even announcing some WiiU games?

Old school Zelda is always welcome but seriously how long can Nintendo keep going on the strength of Mario/Zelda?

People love shit.

I mean, look at Metroid Prime. You know, the game where you fight the same. Three. Enemies. IN. EVERY. GODDAMN. ROOM!

Considered one of the best games ever and a worthy successor to Super Metroid.

What're the other must-haves for the 3DS? I haven't really been keeping up. Just aware of: Mario 3D Land, NSMB2, Fire Emblem, EO4, and ports of Z:OoT, Starfox 64, and SSFIV.

TransatlanticFoe wrote:Old school Zelda is always welcome but seriously how long can Nintendo keep going on the strength of Mario/Zelda?
If all Nintendo did was make new entries for Mario 3D, NSMB, Smash Bros., Zelda 2D & 3D, Metroid 2D & 3D, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, and the occasional oddball like ExciteTruck or Pikmin, I think I'd be pretty well satisfied.
