Favorite vertizontal shmup?

I'm looking for a PCB to install in our cab at work to awe my coworkers.

I'm not crazy about Giga Wing or Mars Matrix. Any other suggestions?

I'm not crazy about proper horizontal shmups, but not out of the question.

Good music is valuable to me.

Must be fairly available to obtain.

Radiant Silvergun most likely.

Runners up are Chaos Field and those others you mentioned, maybe RayStorm too.

Definitely Soukyugurentai followed by Radiant Silvergun.
Though they are probably fairly difficult to obtain (I'm not sure about the availability of PCBs at all)

Personally I'd go 2nd souky/radiant silvergun, but neither are the easiest to source... and tbh if you're looking to tempt people to shmups these might not be the best bet - rs being something they may have passed on xbla and souky being a bit more of an acquired taste. Sountracks are quite strong though if that's your thing?

Beyond that you're probably going to be horizontals, and for easier-to-find-variety you may find a neo geo (esp a 2 or 4 slot) the better bet for the office crowd? Unless you want to go eggs in one basket progear or something?

Get a Sega ST-V motherboard. You can play Guardian Force, Soukyuguentai, and Radiant Silvergun on that. (And Cotton Boomerang, if you don't mind mixing in a hori)

Or take the MVS route and grab Strikers 1945 Plus and Aero Fighters 2. Those are both "coworker safe" in that they are very straightforward and you won't have to explain how the games work.

Any particular reason why? It's a pretty darn solid game, IMO, albeit the music is rather lacking.

How rare are Akai Katana PCBs? It's a solid hori shmup that's got really good visuals and music, definitely would awe them, and it's not too rough a shmup...

My favourite vertizontal is Zanac Neo, but if I wanted PCBs, the above advice would suit me fine.

For what the OP asks, however, my pick would definitely be Radiant Silvergun.
Long lasting, epic, endless hours of learning and accomplishment. I suppose.

Thanks guys. Sega ST-V it is. In fact just nabbed Radiant Silvergun from eBay for a reasonable price. Was Thunderforce V ever released on ST-V? I know what I said about horizontals but some are close to my heart like TFV and Einhander.

Nope, SS and PS1 only.

It's a shame we didn't get a 2D Thunder Force on STV with a SS port later on. Although our resident Tecno Soft nut, jp, has always said a lot of the company's talent behind stuff like TFIV and Hyper Duel had departed by the time of TFV, so maybe it was never meant to be. At least there's Hyper Duel's Saturn Mode, effectively a super-deluxe version of the PCB for the hardware.

Damn, now I'm imagining an Elemental Master sequel on STV.
