"Oz: The Great and Powerful" was actually quite good! I went with my girlfriend tonight (it was her pick, and though I lobbied hard for "Olympus Has Fallen", she chose "Oz"), and was surprised by how much I liked it (I really can't stand Mila Kunis, and James Franco doesn't do much for me, either). Great visuals and stylish moviemaking, along with a very entertaining script. As well, and I can say this about *very few* movies these days, it actually made good use of the 3D I was charged $3 extra for. Worth the extra cabbage, I must say.

Sam Raimi can be proud, in my opinion. I now understand why it got such good reviews and made so much money.

Peppermint Candy (Korean)- Tragedy about a dude who had a tough life between failed romance and serving his country. Timeline of events are in reverse order, somewhere around half a dozen segments unfold spanning roughly 20 years. Well acted and mostly interesting. Just a heavy and depressing movie all around. Difficult to recommend.

A couple of recent ones:

- It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World: I've been wanting to rewatch this one for a while now, but with the passing of Jonathan Winters I ended up watching it tonight. It's not quite as funny if you know what to expect as it might otherwise be, but still worth watching. It's also rather long (it had an intermission in the theaters) so you might want to watch it in two sittings.

- GI Joe Retaliation: Ended up seeing this to kill an afternoon a couple of weeks ago without much else to do. The plot is thoroughly contrived and pointless, but you're not watching a movie like this for the plot anyway. Just wait for someone to Youtube the explosions and ninja parts, then skip the rest.

Boys on the Run (2010)

I usually don't comment on the movies I watch, but I have to say, the only likable character in this entire film is the guy who supports the protagonist near the end. All of the main characters are completely obnoxious, and they kinda deserve all of the bad shit that happens to them. In that sense, I'm reminded of Moteki. At least that movie had a dancing scene with Perfume.

The man with the iron fists.

I only bought it for the UK steelbook, which is sad I know. Its only worth watching once, if it all. The storyline is wafer thin, the action is contrived of characters you don't care about. Apart from the Chinese girls, it offers very little at all.

It does however offer a lot of blood and gore. But after watching Spartacus, it just doesn't add anything to the movie. Its all very wutang and wushu, if you like wire work stuff.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Usagi Drop. Not a half bad movie and a good drama. Didn't know till after the movie it was based on a manga. I thought the 2 main kids in the movie did a great job and overall the acting was a lot better than I was expecting and the storyline was one that was believable. Worth a watch.

Argo.

So this is best picture material?

Well, it's a million times better than Mystic River I suppose. Pretty enjoyable with a surprising but not unwelcome humorous streak from the eminent John Gooodman and some Jewish guy who was hilarious (a show stealer almost.)

I liked the 70's o'vision, and on the whole it was an enjoyable, occasionally tense little true story. Interesting, too.

A much better directorial accomplishment from Affleck compared to The Town, which is incredibly overrated, but at the same time not particularly remarkable. Some of the script is eye rolling Hollywood nonsense (top CIA officials swearing, making crude comments for effect, and shouting like madmen in the middle of a busy HQ to try to get things done: both fantasy and farce, and totally unbelievable.)

Aside from a credible casting job, I just wish Affleck stayed behind the camera. He's a useless actor, and didn't really give a performance at all, generally completely overshadowed by anyone he was opposite in a scene. I appreciate he was going for a stoic character, but he just doesn't do anything except sit there and say his line as blankly as possible with absolutely no variation all the way through. Just crap, really.

Otherwise, not a bad way to kill an evening.

Pretty much agreed. It was good, but not best material picture, IMHO. I felt the same about Gladiator though... Haha.

I had seen this years ago and didn't think much of it so I decided to give it another try. I liked it more, but still not all that much. I understand it's appeal, but it seems more like a zombie special effects showcase than an actual movie. Characters are dry and weird and the story is boring. And I gotta say, while I prefer slow zombies to the sprinters (although Return of the Living Dead is my favorite zombie movie), these zombies moved so goddamn slow that the people in this movie had to literally stand and stare at them to be caught. I guess they found it difficult to pull of those neat special effects with the zombies and victims moving around.
Actually I think the italian directors are going for the feeling of a nightmare with the slow zombies.

I'm being chased but I can't run fast enough. They're closing in but I didn't think to run soon enough. The dead body is covered and tied and I'm ready to shoot, but the gun jams and now I've got no time to reload it.

Went to a free screening in IMAX of "Oblivion" tonight. While I wasn't mad that I'd spent the time, had I spent *any* money for this movie, I'd be ticked off. I'd say one star out of four...perhaps, on a *very* generous day, I'd give it one-and-a-half stars out of four.

I wouldn't waste your time if I were you...I *certainly* wouldn't waste your money. Steer clear.

What makes this so bad? if you can post why it sucks so much without spoilers. My mother is a big fan of Tom Cruise and will be seeing this anyways.

Intruder - **
Pretty enjoyable 80s (looks it anyway) gore/slasher flick set in a supermarket. Some of the deaths were highly entertaining, but it's nothing special. Some people say it's a cult classic, not sure why.

The Punisher - ***
The original film with Dolph Lundgren, has a comic book feel to it that the others lacked even if they did have to inject some 'save the children' to make the Punisher look less brutal. I also liked Punisher Warzone as an aside, but the middle of the three films left me cold.

As much as I can't stand Cruise, the script fails him (and the rest of the cast) pretty miserably. There's no mystery...everything is telegraphed *way* early on, and it's just sort of a waste of sci-fi to me. Morgan Freeman's talents are *wasted*, here. It's hard to care about any of the cast members at all.

If your mom is just a Tom Cruise swooner, she'll be happy, though the movie's issues won't really matter to her, now will they? He smiles pretty, romances a couple of women, and generally plays leading man like he's done many times before. The man still can't act, but he certainly knows where his bread is buttered...so he doesn't really *have to* learn to act, now does he?

You have basically confirmed what I thought the movie would be based on the trailer. In fact, I think I know the whole story based on the trailer.

Honestly, so did I. It's also another case wherein the trailer makes the actual movie look *far* more interesting than it actually is.

I had exactly the same feeling watching the trailer tonight.

Speaking of trailers, I wanted to point something out:

The Great Gatsby - I could tell what this was going to be immediately on seeing the yellow car. But then it got really weird. Hollywood seems to have a hard time coming to grips with the '20s and tend to oversaturate it, I guess to make up for lost time. It just looked like a mess though.

The film I was going to see was about events nearly 30 years later - 42, the Jackie Robinson film. Now this was a good picture. It did a pretty good job laying out the fact of big issues within the peripheral vision of some of the players (and smack dab in the middle for others) but didn't try to shift its focus away from the core story - people who just wanted to play baseball. A nice mixture of sweeping and narrow scopes, and a worthy story also.

It's also presenting an era which is prone to a much gentler artistic treatment - instead of the kind of hyper-saturated and dagger-studded visuals prevalent in an overengineered '20s visual pastiche, here the filmmakers employed a somewhat softer focus and muted colors.

Mother. I wish South Korea would stop making Thriller movies. They make so many that are worth seeing. Mother is about a mother with a son who is mentally handicapped and after getting drunk one night when his friend doesn't show up, he on the way home sees a school girl and follows her, where she goes into a dark alley. She turns up dead the next day and the one they capture is her son. The way she stops at nothing to find the real killer is crazy. Worth seeing and I'll be looking for this to buy.

The Collection - **

Followup to The Collector, and actually quite a good one at that. The Collector was a significantly above average slasher film about a serial killer who likes to kill his victims with elaborate traps. It owes a lot to Saw of course, but it's very well done.

The Collection sees a man who escaped his clutches being forced to go to the killers lair to help rescue a young woman who has just been 'collected'. People die, horribly. The killer is scary. The acting is pretty decent all round. If you want a nice simple horror movie it's recommended, but watch the initial film first because the sequel really *is* a sequel and weaker stand-alone.

G.I. Joe Retaliation.

My gf described it as "a piece of shit."

And it is, although it's made for 10 year old kids really. Anyone above that age realises the script is laughable, the characters 1 dimensional (and ridiculous: what kind of maximum security prison warden behaves like a teenage drug pusher?) and the acting abhorrent. Although, it ain't a film you go to see for any of the above.

Jonathan Price does give a performance at a least - how can he not, he's too good for the material. And even though Dwayne Johnson is not an actor, he has charisma, I have a soft spot for him. But this ain't a ladies film. The girls in this are atrocious, casting needs firing. Who hired Jinx? I don't know if I've ever seen someone deliver three whole lines so badly.

Some okay action though. Best part was blowing up London with a nuclear bomb. I really enjoyed that bit.

With Commando, it's the best Arnold Schwarzenegger film.

I watched The Terminator last night. It reconfirmed things I knew about James Cameron: what he's good at (sets, special effects, move-the-plot-forward dialogue) and what would later become his greatest weakness (caricature characters and non-essential dialogue). Though all those weaknesses don't detract from one of the best 80s sci-fi movies out there.

Commando has superb comedy value but it ain't so great a movie. Too much G.Ho for you recently? :)

I think I like it so much for the comedy value. Vernon Hill cinches the movie with his wild orgasm-prone face.

It's hard to sort out the arnold movies, because I love them all. I almost forgot about Total Recall - I only have it on VHS so it gets watched less.

Conan the Barbarian is basically a 2 1/2 hour long Basil Polideouris music video for me - the perfect movie to turn my brain off and just let all the spectacle and orchestral score wash over me. I come out of it a stronger man.

I'm think "See you at the party Richter!" is probably the greatest retort/comeback line ever, especially since the guy just had both his arms ripped off and fell down a lift shaft. It made me laugh so bad last time I had to hit pause.

And it's Michael Ironside getting owned, which makes it x2 as satisfaction. He plays a great meanie.

Total Recall also had that incredible bit of acting where Ahnuld made all those dudes think he wasn't "DE REAL QUAID" then goes "IT IS!" and mows them all down. edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3YIU64sy8A

Nah, man, the best part was in the automatic escalator. Ahnuld uses a random person as a human shield... little dude was Swiss cheese!

- He shoots Sharon Stone in the head after a fight.

- Ahnuld: "Consider that a divorce"

- Ahnuld: "Come on, Cohagen! Give da peeple some eah!"
