at this point I had a slight amount of hope left for the film, because the scenes with Ben were good, his character was being established, and this film was supposed to be a re-imagining of the original NOTLD film. Ben eventually runs out of petrol and makes his way to a farmhouse, while trying to see if anyone is home they shoot him in the face through the letterbox, and Ben is dead.

I had to laugh at this. Funny stuff.

Die Hard: With a Vengance
Awesome. Almost as good as the first. Has that "tight" action that made the first one so awesome... elevator scene was great. Good humor, and Samuel L was a nice addition.

Ted: I heard mixed reviews, but I loved this. Never seen a movie directed solely at Generation X stoners. So many 80's pop culture references... so awesome.

How is this contrived mess considered a minor sci-fi classic? I watched it alone but looked around in embarrassment whenever any of the characters spoke. Awful, pathetic dialogue, apparently conceived by a 14-year-old boy, executed with horrendous acting. The doctor character was the worst of the bunch, acting Looney Tunes most of the time but when anything health-related came up she was suddenly professional and spoke with authority when she gave advice that is common knowledge to anyone that made it past grade school. At one point she makes a snarky jack-off gesture to one of the guys; no middle-aged white woman with a degree and all of her teeth has ever done this, ever. The attractive nerdy girl was a huge surprise! Sci-fi movies never have a character like that! She goes from whiny and confused to Mr.Wizard as soon as she puts on her glasses. A shame they didn't have to hack into some computer system like Lex in Jurassic Park, as I'm sure she would've found that no problem.

As Mr. Ebert said, " I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it."

Ah, Cube isn't so bad. I mean, it's a shoestring budget, they filmed it in one room. The actors, dialogue etc are atrocious, cringeworthy - basically everything you said - and it takes a lot of teeth gritting to try to get around it, I agree; but I think the simple idea of the Cube itself and the little twists are enjoyable enough for a super low budget flick.
Certainly not the best film ever made (I've had no urge to rewatch since 15 years ago or whatever) but, well, anything Ebert hates, hates, hates has to have a little bit of good in it, right?

Finally checked out the 2013 remake of the classic 1981 horror film that's known as The Evil Dead is simply titled "Evil Dead" this time around. Plently of twists and spins await the audience in this second outing with some truly gut-wrenching moments down the road. And if you stick around and watch the entire ending credits, what follows afterwards, is very a special surprise that awaits the loyal horror/gore genre lover with his or her paitience. This remake's ending credits is quite stylish with it's portrayal of blood splatter EFX galore. Most folks will certainly won't touch this remake (even with a twelve foot pole) but the horror fans will have an awesome time checking it out.

As the ol' saying goes: the horror films are made for the horror film fans, support them (the horror film industry) and they'll continue to make more. It's that simple. Back in the early 1980s, that was the golden age for the horror film genre that'll never see the light of day again as it's mostly a trickle of horror films released on the big screen nowdays but most of them are released directly to DVD/Blu-Ray format nowdays (and thus bypassing the American movie theater industry entirely). Hostel 3 was said to have been slated for a proper big screen release stateside but it never happened (of course, it's earlier two prequels got the big screen release treatment). It takes money and time to find the right film distributor to make it happen, and if not, the direct-to-video market is the last resort/option to consider.

And not to mention the first cut of any horror film that goes through the MPAA's film screeners, if they slap it with an initial NC-17 rating, then it's back to the editing room to cut it down in order to get a more favorable R rating for a nationwide film release. Rinse and repeat until the MPAA's happy (actually, they're sticklers for exacting detail -- deviate from said standards/code, kiss your film's country-wide distro plans goodbye), then your film's given the green light for nationwide distribution.

Or by going the independent distro route will work but will entail having to spend your own money to show said film in the local art film houses these days.

I just watched Room 237, the doc about The Shining. I'd heard good things about this but it's a load of old bumf. The doc itself is just a series of phonecalls with 6 idiots, played over the top of various fims.

None of the theories have any kind of basis in reality. All of them seem to have no knowledge of how films are made and put together, or more importantly Kubrick's own methods. It's really a documentery about these loons - which is ok, but that wasn't the impression given about it, it got a lot of press in the UK.

Might go see that Evil Dead remake... not sure...

Watched the Red Dawn 2012 remake yesterday. I'll give it a solid 65%. Totally watchable. Not quite as good as the 1984 original, but not far off. North Korea invades North America.
The interesting thing about the movie is the zionist review site Rotten Tomatoes gave it 13% and stated that its "not topical". What?! Its the most topical film of all time! They quite simply don't want people to see it and make the North Korea/North America pre-planned ff connection.
They gave Zero Dark Thirty 93% because they want you to see that particular lie.

All mainstream videos on Kubrick's films completely ignore what he was really exposing. He spent 30 years making films that expose the Club that he used to be a member of. I recommend the Eyes Wide Shut synopsis by a guy called Kentroversy, written in 2006. I also highly recommend James Corbett's (the Corbett Report) video on Kubrick. He reveals some good stuff on The Shining. This can be found on Youcube.

Infernal Affairs. Still an amazing movie and glad I bought the boxset with all 3 of them. Still loved how it played out, but still think the second movie in the series is the best. If you haven't seen it, go find it!

When I watched Avengers in the theater, I secretly hoped/suspected that in fact I was watching the much-delayed third installment of the Cube saga, considering how much time in the beginning they drone on and on about that tesseract-not-cube thing.

The moral of this story is that Avengers sucked.

Surprisingly good. Well-written, strong characters, capable acting, and decent effects. It ended up being pretty generic, but I appreciate any horror movie that isn't hopelessly stupid.

As these two clips would suggest, there's quite a lot to like about this movie. I just cannot fathom how Ho came up with these dubs. I guess you really have to fundamentally not understand the English language.

I recently watched Killer Joe with my old lady and a few of her friends. It was pretty uncomfortable, I could tell they were horrified by the movie, but I enjoyed it regardless. It's the second collaboration between William Friedkin and Tracey Letts (The first was Bug) and it's even more bizarre and fucked up than that was. Matthew Mcconaughey's Joe Cooper is one of the scuzziest cops I think I've ever seen in a movie. The trailer trash setting, Mcconaughey's gloriously weird character, and an incredibly strange, warped scene involving a piece of fried chicken take a story that could have been played as a straight noir to a whole other level of weird. Plus, it gets bonus points for a full frontal Juno Temple.

Kickboxer from Hell is amazing, as is most of Godfrey Ho's other film output.

Yeah, he usually films this really out-of-place 20-minute movie with white [alleged]actors, and would splice it in to some crime drama or action movie from Thailand or Hong Kong or Korea. Sometimes, the results are amazing, like in Ninja Terminator.
Or downright hilarious, like in Full Metal Ninja.

The latest I watched on DVD are Killer Knowns From Outer Space, and Edmond (by Stuart Gordon).
I found Killer Klowns very average, was waiting more after that B-movie. I liked Edmond, reminds me a bit After Hours by Scorcese.
Also I rewatched that good ol' Motel Hell, still so great

Eye in The Sky. Great Surveillance thriller. They did good establishing the plot and the good and bad guys. The use of the technology was spot-on as well, but one thing I really think they could have done better was the length of the movie. It should have been 15-20 minutes longer. But if you want a good thriller, this one is pretty good. Sometimes Hong Kong surprises us all.

Zombi 2 (1979)



I had seen this years ago and didn't think much of it so I decided to give it another try. I liked it more, but still not all that much. I understand it's appeal, but it seems more like a zombie special effects showcase than an actual movie. Characters are dry and weird and the story is boring. And I gotta say, while I prefer slow zombies to the sprinters (although Return of the Living Dead is my favorite zombie movie), these zombies moved so goddamn slow that the people in this movie had to literally stand and stare at them to be caught. I guess they found it difficult to pull of those neat special effects with the zombies and victims moving around.

Interesting film about how children like to talk shit and get people into serious trouble. Pretty moody with some strong performances and an epic beard/hair combo from one of the supporting cast. Dark stuff, but delightfully well directed. Foreign, of course.

The Colour of The Truth. Good crime movie, and the soundtrack is quite different than most HK crime movies. Worth a watch at least once to see how everything plays out.

It was pretty good, right up to the end.
Fucking cheesy sharks, what the hell. And the most paper-thin excuse to make only the "hollywood couple" make it out of the movie alive. With cheesy Karate-Kid-esque "you can do it kid" orchestral music!

Seriously, an ending that bad really sours my perception of the whole movie! It's perfunctory to bring the monster back for one more go, but between the attack of the apathetic sharks, and the pointless death of one of the survivors, it will be hard for me to give enough of a shit to watch this movie again.
